A very noble undertaking. Since Jamie is openly homosexual, he is probably more aware of problems with HIV and AIDS, mainly because the disease is more likely to occur with gay couples.

lawl misinformation

Re: Jamie McGonnigal speaks out in honor of World AIDS Day: ''I Talk Because'' begins

Yeaaahh, it's not actually, you know, caused by being gay. It's supposedly easier to transmit that way, but knowing how prevalent it is, I really doubt that that's even the primary manner in which it is anymore, if it ever was.

I watch Jamie's LJ, and this is par for the course for him- he is very outspoken about issues close to his heart, like gay rights and this. He's a very brave person for doing so.

How is that "brave" to talk about your own life? I get called "brave" for talking about my autism but to me it's like talking about mowing the lawn. It's mundane because it's something that's everyday.

I'm pretty sure you don't put yourself at risk of being killed by talking about your autism.

Its extremely brave. Remembered what happened to Ellen at first? She came out for gay issues and got fired.

I don't mean to say your Autism isn't important, but its not a heavily debated moral issue that many people get death threats for. People are killed frequently for being openly gay, and the fact Jamie is being so open about it is a very brave move. And for that, i applaud him.

And i also applaud his support for the World Aids Day. Its a good issue to spend your time on :)

AIDs is bad, concert for AIDs "cure?" good :)

What. She got "fired" because her show's ratings declined. Her sitcom continued for a season after she came out.

...you'd be surprised. You'd be VERY surprised. Especially with those "speaks" people out there spreading misinformation and lies.

I'm not saying this isn't a good thing. I just don't see how it came to be that saying things that need to be said could be called "bravery" rather than "logic".

Before that. Like, when she first came out, she was fired. I don't really follow her, so i don't know everything, but it was a huge dispute (remembering what i heard on TV).

...you'd be surprised. You'd be VERY surprised. Especially with those "speaks" people out there spreading misinformation and lies.

Well, i know theres the occasional wack-job who spreads lies and such like that, but there are even more people like that against the homosexual community. Look at Harvey Milk. If he spoke out for Autism, everyone (minus the few crazys) would think he was doing a good thing. But he spoke out for homosexuality, and he got murdered.

I'm not saying this isn't a good thing. I just don't see how it came to be that saying things that need to be said could be called "bravery" rather than "logic".

All i'm trying to say is that he's very brave for being so open about everything. It is bravery. People could lose their jobs, get murdered, etc for coming and being gay openly.

And like i said, your Autism is very well important to you. It's just not the same category as someone who comes out as gay, so you really can't compare them. It's really hard to argue, because i know thats a huge thing for you, and for a lot of Autistic people out there, but its an entirely different category then homosexuality. So it's unfair to say he isn't brave for being open, because he really is. He's risking his job, his friendships, and his life by doing what hes doing. If thats not brave, someone tell me what is.

Come on people, Jamie's sexual preferences have nothing to do with the topic at hand, which is the charity work. HIV/AIDS is killing millions, of every color, creed and stripe. Spreading awareness among everyone is an extremely important cause, and Jamie, as well as everyone else involved deserve to be commended for doing good work.

Re: Jamie McGonnigal speaks out in honor of World AIDS Day: ''I Talk Because'' begins

I think it's great that Jamie's doing this. He already has a ton of my respect for being one of my favorite voice actors, and this gives me even more reason to respect him. Kudos to you, Jamie.

Re: Jamie McGonnigal speaks out in honor of World AIDS Day: ''I Talk Because'' begins

What a great guy.

I seriously respect him for both being an amazing actor and an amazing person.

Re: Jamie McGonnigal speaks out in honor of World AIDS Day: ''I Talk Because'' begins

Yeah, but she couldn't get a job after for basically that reason. I always find it funny with a lot of fans say that a celebrity coming out isn't a problem, and that may be true for those strongly liberal or die hard fans... but unfortunately evidence points that the US largely does not support homosexuality at all, and if it wasn't for the fear of being labeled a "Bigot" there probably would be lynching in the streets. (Okay, big exaggeration, but people would at least be very vocal if not making the act illegal)

...you'd be surprised. You'd be VERY surprised. Especially with those "speaks" people out there spreading misinformation and lies.

Yeah, actually you're very correct, I'm kinda surprised Neku said that. There are a lot of people that believe Autistic people should be put out of their misery. (Which ironically can share some same circles of the people who'd do the same to homosexuals)

Also, you are brave Black Jack

Re: Jamie McGonnigal speaks out in honor of World AIDS Day: ''I Talk Because'' begins

Wow, I didn't know Jamie McGonnigal was gay. o.o

That's interesting, but off-topic of course.

And awwwwww, that's so nice of Jamie. He really cares about this cause. =)

You know what, I'm really glad that he's doing all this work for HIV/AIDS charities and everything. That's an excellent cause. And on top of doing this, he's an awesome voice actor too! Way to go, Jamie! Keep up the great work!! =D

Re: Jamie McGonnigal speaks out in honor of World AIDS Day: ''I Talk Because'' begins

Sorry for the late reply, but I'd like to clear the air. I never said that it's caused by being gay. It's however proven that HIV is more likely to be contracted by homosexual men.

I have a lot of respect for the guy, the way he passionately fights for gay rights is very noble. I sincerely hope the politicians across stop being so narrowminded and accept everyone the way they are. (According to Jamie's facebook, his rallies are not so successful)

Re: Jamie McGonnigal speaks out in honor of World AIDS Day: ''I Talk Because'' begins

It's however proven that HIV is more likely to be contracted by homosexual men.

Which is why most of the people who have it are heterosexuals living in Africa. Right.

Re: Jamie McGonnigal speaks out in honor of World AIDS Day: ''I Talk Because'' begins

Wow, I just saw all of this and want to thank you guys for all your responses! And thanks for the kudos as well. To be honest, I kind of see it as my duty - why else are we here if not to help make the world a little bit better than we inherited it?

As for HIV - it's actually not been proven that homosexual sex is more likely to transmit it. Actually, the studies have shown that heterosexual sex (Male to Female) makes the woman more susceptible to contraction than Male to Male. Of gay men who are HIV+, 1 in 6 don't know it because they have not been tested. Of straight people who are HIV+, 1 in 3 don't know it because there is such a huge stigma to even being tested for it. Scary...

Anyway, as for bravery, I don't often think of it as being brave to be myself and stand up for the things I believe in. I think standing up for your friends and those you love is the brave part. And just to clarify (as it ended up on another thread somewhere - I'm not HIV+, I'm happily HIV- and would like to keep it that way. I have a large number of friends who are positive, some of whom were born with it, some who made a mistake by not protecting themselves, some who were raped - no matter what, we have to make sure we don't victimize people who clearly are already having a pretty rough time of it.

Please protect yourselves and please go make a video for the I Talk Because Campaign!!

Hope you're all having a fabulous 2010!!

Love, Jamie
