A Japanese research team said Thursday it had developed the world's first 3D television system that allows users to touch, pinch or poke images floating in front of them.

"It is the first time that you can feel images in the air," said Norio Nakamura, senior scientist with the research team at the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology.

"You can have the sense of touch like poking a rubber ball or stretching a sticky rice cake" when manipulating images, he told AFP by telephone.

The technology changes the shape of three-dimensional images in response to "touches", aided by cameras that monitor how the fingers move, Nakamura said.

It is not known when the technology will be put to practical use but its creators see it being used to simulate surgical operations and in video game software allowing players to experience the sensation of holding weapons or sports equipment.

It could even use scanned images to supplement existing realities, said Nakamura.

"This technology could create a virtual museum where visitors, including vision-impaired people, can put their hands on valuable sculptures that are usually untouchable," Nakamura said.

This is kind of cool. I'm curious as to how it transmits the sense of touch, though. I get how the objects can respond to it, but not how the user could feel what they were "touching."

And Japan does it again, people.
It'll only be a matter of time 'till people will use this for pornography

In 4 years, I'll have to spend another $200 to get the Nintendo HS (Holoscreen)

So... does that mean we get to actually throw the ball now?

my god that'd be awesome

is there any technology japan can't make?

Well, they have automatic masturbators down.

Hmm... this could be interesting. But I'll believe it when I see it.

Wow. now i'll be able to feel the soft skin of mijumaru as it follows me around hiun city.

And now all those Sci-Fi movies with holograms are one step closer to being real.

Just wait and see, some porny hackers will eventually figure it out and make it bad... =(

Are you kidding me? That's got to be at least $500. $1000 if we're talking a portable system that can generate 3D holograms.

But who am I kidding, according to Moore's law, it'll probably be down to $300 in 4 years.

So... does that mean we get to actually throw the ball now?

And the probability of catching will depend on your sense of aim... that would be AWESOME. <3

Well, they have automatic masturbators down.

Not to mention breast suits.

Yeah, same here. I mean, it's projecting a hologram, not a physical object. So how would we be able to feel it? We're just gonna have to wait then...

But seriously, this just sounds awesome.

Obi-Wan Kenobi, you're our only hope!

Wait, tactile 3D? We've hardly rolled out regular 3D to the masses yet. All the same,

Meh. 3M has already developed that technology. Although, you can't actually touch it.

So...basically...they've developed something similar, but not remotely capable of doing the MAIN function of THIS technology? That's like comparing this to 3D TVs. The whole POINT of this technology is the fact that you can TOUCH it. If someone else has developed something similar that you can't touch...then it's NOT this technology because it lacks the key portion: Touching.

Maybe you have to wear a glove that would simulate feeling whatever you're touching?

So this is like Tony Stark's computer in the Iron Man movies? Or will be like it?

If so, Sweet, sounds good to me. $4000000000 down the drain.

Now the Japanese will create the ultimate Pokemon experience so you can actually poke. feel, touch, get electrocuted, etc, etc.

I expect a video game that's is programmed so depending on what you do, like who you poke, prod, etc it'll actually result in different scenarios.

Next we need technology so that you can take a candy bar from the television screen and eat it, very similar to the original Willy Wonka movie. Of course you'll probably have to pay in some fashion, but damn, I can't wait to see what's available when I'm like 90 years old.

I thought at first it was a home version of TV, but looking at the applications, it's really just for non-home TV, like museums and surgical. Still, it's a cool technology, and yes, I agree that Japan's done it again.

@dman_dustin: Actually the idea of taking the candy bar from the screen and eating it was from the original book, so that came first.
