Fun fact: if Ash does catch Latias here, he'll have met every unique criteria for catching Pokemon species, as she would be his first officially owned Legendary or female-only species (he's met every other criteria, ex. he's caught male-only Tauros, a Mythical Melmetal, etc.)
 
It's not a new series. The logo is the same and just has the subtitle added much like the BW seasons. Also, XYZ is counted as a separate series in many platforms and Bulbapedia still kept the numbers.

Admitedly, I wouldn't agree completely with labelling this episode as ATBAPM01 but at least it would be more reasonable that labelling the episodes as specials when the differences are gigantic. I'm sure this episode shares more similarities with the rest of journeys than with the Arceus or Sky specials. Labelling it wrong can lead to misinformation like a trivia I saw in JN136 that says "This is the last main series episode to feature Ash and Pikachu as protagonists." That's just not right.

The theme song is different than in main Journeys episodes, which I'd count as a point towards it being a special episode. And XYZ is part of XY in the same vein as Battle Frontier was part of the Advanced Generation.

These 11 episodes will be included as a part of the Master Journeys dub season. In my opinion, that seems pretty similar to early Battle Frontier episodes being included as a part of the Advanced Battle dub season.
 
This series, even though we haven’t really seen it yet, already seems much more of its own thing than XYZ was, and people are convinced that was its own series. Despite the fact that it was in the middle of the XY storyline, the ending was clearly an ending to XY, it had no new main characters, had all the old stock animation and soundtrack from the rest of XY, etc.

This series has its own story and own cast. While it does look like the art style is identical to PM19, the early AG episodes look very similar to the late Johto episodes so that isn’t really much to go off of. What the dub classifies this as is irrelevant.

I’ve personally never understood why people still think of XYZ as its own thing like how AG and DP are different series, because clearly it was just a cheap marketing thing to bill it as its own thing (it didn’t have the substance to actually feel like it’s own series). But this absolutely feels like it will be its own series separate from PM19.
 
To add to what others have said, this mini-series also has a new set of show runners listed (e.g. Tomioka in charge of writing as opposed to Yonemura in PM19). This is definitely not a coda to that series, whatever the dub bills it as. The dub, as we’ve seen just recently in another thread, bills the end of Kanto as Orange Islands so their classification is as meaningful as a handful of warm snow.
 
These are fair enough arguments. However, all of this makes me think that these Aim to Be a Pokémon Master specials shouldn’t even be grouped with the Arceus Chronicles specials if that’s the case. I also think The Distant Blue Sky shouldn’t even count as a Journeys special and have its own dedicated page, like The Mastermind of Mirage Pokémon. If we’re basing this off of the production team being different from the main anime, then grouping it with episodes that also have a different production team isn’t really much better.

Also, the fact that the Pokémon community has constantly been labeling Pocket Monsters (2019) as Journeys, when these episodes will be a part of Master Journeys when they get localized, doesn’t really help much. Even if it’s a dub only thing, the fact of the matter is that the series was never called “Journeys” in Japan, ever. The community ran with that term. Plus, these special episodes are called “Pocket Monsters: Aim to Be a Pokémon Master”, not just “Aim to Be a Pokémon Master”. Even in Japan, they keep the “Pocket Monsters (2019)” labeling for this series.

Overall, I hear where you all are coming from. At the end of the day, this is just a confusing mess, and the idea of labeling episodes like these, the Arceus Chronicles, and The Distant Blue Sky as all under Journeys special episodes is a fan made idea in the first place. For whatever it’s worth, I never thought that XYZ was a separate series, as it takes place right after the Olympia gym battle that foreshadowed Ash-Greninja and Zygarde. Quite frankly, this Aim to Be a Pokémon Master is a completely unique idea, with the closest thing to compare it to being Pokémon Chronicles. All of this is a headache, and how the community ends up perceiving this series is not really my problem at the end of the day. Whatever category it falls into, it is what it is.

Oh... so that's why the numbering for this episode starts with 6. I was genuinely confused about that, thanks for bringing it up.

Yeah, I'll be honest, I don't care whether the community considers this new mini-series to be part of Journeys or not, I just think it's a bit weird to offset the numbering of this series' episodes by six whole numbers just because we're lumping it together with the other specials. I'd understand it if this new series is just gonna be a few episodes, but we're getting 11 whole episodes here. "Hey, did you watch JNS12?" sounds a lot less intuitive than "Hey, did you watch episode 7 of the new series?" to me.

Either have it start from 1, or have it continue off from the latest episode of Journeys. I genuinely don't care about the pedantic discussions about the nature of the series itself, I'm just mildly annoyed by the weird numbering offset.

Without getting too off-topic here, I agree that calling PM19 "Journeys" when not talking about the dub specifically isn't super accurate- especially since when you think about it "Journeys" as a title doesn't reflect that series as well as it should- however I don't really blame people since it's a hell of a lot easier than constantly typing out Pocket Monsters (2019) each time. I really wish the JP production team had given that series a proper subtitle! I also agree that I wouldn't classify these episodes as PM19 specials either, if it were up to me (and I know it's not!) I'd label this episode as APM01 (Aim to be a Pokemon Master) or something like that. No need for 001 as we know this series won't get to the triple digits ):

For reference, the Chinese Pokemon Wiki labels Pocket Monsters (2019) as SS, which stands for both 'Sword and Shield', and 'Seventh Series' (as in, the seventh Pokemon anime series).

Whereas for these upcoming episodes, they are labeled as MP, which I presume stands for 'Mezase Pokemon Master', and only the first two letters were taken for consistency sake.
 
If this is the Latias from the Movie then I feel like it's a bit of a random choice to include it here, Ash has bonded with a other Legendary Pokemon before, particularly Giratina and Solgaleo. There's also Lugia and Ho-Oh but we've seen enough of them in Journeys. I'm not counting on Giratina but Solgaleo DOES appear in the Poster, although it's with Ash's other Pokemon so it probably doesn't mean anything either.

Still, I'm betting on the Latias scene being a part of a montage.

Aside from Nebby, Latias is the Legendary Pokémon that Ash has the deepest connection with. Ho-Oh and Lugia mainly hold just symbolic meaning, and I don't think his connection with Giratina is all the different compared to most other movie Legendaries.

Still realllllly hoping Ash catches Latias here. I found the relationship Ash had with Latias in the 5th movie (which happens to be one of my favorite Pokemon movies, I used to watch it on DVD all the time as a kid,) to be totally adorable and wholesome, not at all unlike the relationship he has with his Bayleef. :bulbaLove: Latias and Latios became some of my favorite Pokemon probably largely because of Pokemon Heroes. Needless to say, this is a catch I've wanted Ash to make ever since I first heard the rumors that he was originally supposed to catch Latias in the movie's initial script before it was changed. So, not a catch for him back then, but one I certainly hope he makes now.
 
We didnt see the episode yet to decide if it is just Jns or something dif... but it seems they aim it to be dif.
