First off, I want to know who here is Jewish (if you didn't know, I am). Next, just for knowledge's sake, post one thing that you think other people might not know about Judaism! Feel free to share stories.

My one thing is: Judaism is split into three main divisions. These are Reform (not really strict), Conservative (more strict than Reform, but less strict than...) and Orthodox (abides all Torah laws).

Post away!

I'm Jewish.

Although, my family isn't highly-religious, but we still celebrate the major holidays and stuff. So, I think we're conservative.

As for something that many people don't know....

Girls have a "coming-of-age" thing as well, just like the boys do. It's called a Bat Mitzvah, and I had mine when I turned 13. It was a lot of fun, and of course, I got a lot of money from everyone. Haha. XD

But seriously, I think it was really awesome to see all those years of learning Hebrew finally be put to the test. It was definitely a great accomplishment for me! ^_^

Something else that people wouldn't know: Growing up and going to Sunday school at my synagogue was great, because my Rabbi always gave out candy and prizes to people who were able to answer questions correctly and stuff. This really helped encourage everyone to do well! =)

Why is this here then? It's not a debate... haha, as a matter of fact as soon as I saw a thread with such a title in Soap Box it scared the shit out of me, hah thank god it doesn't actually go here. Someone will probably move it soon anyway.

Anyway, yeah that would be me as well. I'm not religious either, but I spent half my life in Israel so, that would make me fluent in Hebrew and celebrating all the holidays. The truth is that only 25% of Israelis are actually Orthodox and observant, which may or may not be a surprise to a lot of outsiders, the rest just celebrate the holidays for traditions and having parties like non-religious Americans celebrate Christmas. Some of them have some pretty funky traditions.
You would rarely ever find an Orthodox person from TA... at least not in my experience. TA and certain parts of Jeru are one of the few areas where places are open on weekends.

I celebrate the holidays, so that would make me some sort of Jewish.

As for the fact:

In world religions, you are considered the religion of your mother. I know this because my mother told me, and she is the one that is Jewish, which is why I would be considered a Jew.

Yeah, I see no reason for this thread to be here as long as people stay away from the Arab-Israeli conflict (which they will, if you want to discuss that make a new thread - or bump one of the old ones).

I hope you meant to put this in Misc... while it definitely doesn't go in the debate place, it's not exactly a Real World topic here...

Hey, I have a question about Judaism... I heard that pork and alcohol are prohibited as it is in Islam, is that true?

Pork is, but definitely not alcohol! It's a tradition ritual to drink wine every Friday night at dinner for kiddush. There's some kinds of wine or beer that isn't kosher for some reason, due to a certain ingredient or whatever (not the alcohol) but there's nothing even close to prohibiting alcohol. Who told you that?

I know Islam prohibits both. Well, I was talking with my friend about religions, and he said: "dude, Jewish people do not drink alcohol or pork, just like us". Although that guy's information aren't always accurate, so I thought of asking :p

Thanks for the info.

I heard that mainly Orthodox Jews for sure don't eat pork. The rest can choose to.

For example, Orthodox Jews may condemn homosexuality and evolution, but I don't see why the others would.

Hmm, the charter of this forum says: The Real World Post and discuss real-world news and current events and debate controversial topics in The Soap Box sub-forum.

There's been no debate so far, so it doesn't belong in The Soap Box.

Hard to say this thread doesn't belong in the The Real World forum. While this topic isn't breaking news, I and many others are learning things about Judaism we didn't know. And it is about the real world practices of Judaism.

If someone with greater powers than I have wants to send this thread to some junk pile, please do so. Otherwise, it remains here.

And you don't think Misc (Outside the Box) would be a better fit for this? People can learn stuff there as well. This hardly qualifies as news or current events.

Meh, may as well post in here. I'm...some sort of Jew. I was raised with conservative Jewish values, but have always believed that anything less than orthodox is an impure form of worship. That said, I'm practically without a connection to my faith today. Religion's a zany thing.

I'm Jewish. But I am, like, less than reform. Seriously, the only holiday I really care for is Hannukah. I'm dreading the day I start fasting for Yom Kippur. Also, I am a non-Jesus Jew, so I don't believe in Jesus. <--- If that was offending to anyone, please take in mind that it is only my belief, and almost all Jews have that belief.

So, you wanted to know what some people might want to know, as said in the first post? Well, as much as people say about it, Bar Mitzvah's aren't hard. It was so easy in my opinion. The whole ceremony was so easy that it felt like half an hour instead of two and a half. So, you Jewish and haven't had one yet? Don't worry. xD
