It's terrible. It's the same sadistic, dark crap you get out of Witch Hunter Robin and Paranoia Agent.

Watch something more cheerful. I hate animes that turn into mindscrews. All they do is tick me off.

Heck, even Tenjho Tenge is more cheerful, and it deals with a highschooler going insane.

Damn, that was on today? Completely forgot.

It's not mindscrew, though, nor is it particularly sadistic, I'm not quite sure where you get those ideas from. It's an interesting take on the detective genre, where we see things from the murderer's point of view, and while Light and L have some crazy mindgames going on, with certain parts of their plans not being revealed right away, there isn't really a whole lot of toying with the viewer. What you see is mostly what you get.

Death Note actually is not that deep or sadistic as it tries to be.

Death Note is one of my girlfriend's favourite shows. >.>

I, personally, have never watched it, so I can't take part in the arguement. However, it does seem interesting from what I've heard.

Witch Hunter Robin was sadistic and dark? Yeah it wasn't exactly rainbows and lollipops, but it certainly wasn't sadistic.

Pansy. If you can't take a guy killing people by writing their name down then you need to grow a pair.

My word, a series called Death Note that isn't cheerful. It's unpossible!

Wouldn't you want to kill with the death note crimral who deserve to die.

I saw it and find it to be a it interesting.

I can't say anything regarding a series that I haven't seen, which includes Death Note and Paranoia Agent, but I can comment on Witch Hunter Robin. As AegisX stated, it isn't sadistic. Robin is a warm and kind person who clearly shows remorse and guilt when she has to kill. If you don't like the series, that's entirely your business, of course, but 'sadistic' isn't an applicable word.

Well, for the sake of this not turning into a let's-all-bash-Arcane-Mind thread, what would you recommend in the way of more cheerful anime?

...It is really that hard? Pokemon might be a good start.

I must say, the dubbing is pretty good. But some things were lost in translation.

All three Astro Boy series, One Piece, any Lupin the Third series/film, Black Jack 21(.... well it's more cheerful than Death Note at least), Gintama(The manga is better), FLCL, and R.O.D. the TV. All rather happy-go-lucky series, from what I recall.

I was addressing Arcane Mind, actually, because although he said, "Watch something more cheerful," he didn't follow up on it. I was asking less out of interest than I was curiosity about the purpose of this topic.

Ah, well... that was a bit of typing wasted.

Not really my cup of tea. But at least it's original and not cookie-cutter like some anime that's been coming around as of late.

and I don't think I'd call Black Jack cheerful...

Death Note's english dub was pretty good. I thought the actor was sounding a little more crazy than he was suppose to at that level, but all the voices were good. That said, Death Note isn't suppose to be sadistic in the way you are implying.

I mean, it's a show about killing people with Grim Reapers, but that's as dark as it gets. That's about the same level as the Nightmare Before Christmas. That said, the Anime is worse than the Comic because the Anime tries it's best to turn it the way you described.

It's really not though, it's just a thriller that is suppose to screw with the mind of the viewer by making them question what is moral. It does this really well, and never tries to be anything else.

It doesn't go into some emo piece like Eva or something.

Not entirely. You mentioned FLCL, and I've heard good things about it, so that reminds me that I need to look into it.

Incidentally, kudos on your J.D. avatar.

Ok, the 'Watch something more cheerful" part was an attempt at trolling. However, I do have anime that I like that isn't "sunshine and happiness". I rather enjoy the Ghost in the Shell anime series. Also, while it may be far too mainstream, I enjoy Bleach and Naruto. I also enjoy some non-mainstream. Tenjho Tenge, Baki the Grappler, about half of Cowboy Bebop, and, oddly enough, Slayers. Pokemon anime is a given or I wouldn't be on this forum at all.

I really hate minsdcrew animes, like Paranoia Agent and Neon Genesis Evangelion. Witch Hunter Robin rubbed me the wrong way, as did Wolf's Rain. One Piece is too over the top. While I did like the manga episode of Shaman King with the battle against the German necromancer, I haven't seen enough of it to comment.

Well that IS the point of mindescrew titles...they make you think for several sleepless nights 'till you figure it out or see someone else's analysis.

To be honest, I assumed as much. That would make this thread a rant, and that's fine. I occasionally feel the need to rant, too.

This may have nothing to do with the rest of my post, but I must say that I agree. Stand Alone Complex was a very enjoyable series. It also prompted me to read The Catcher in the Rye and Flowers for Algernon, both of which I really liked.

Again, I can't comment on either of those, but there are times when I like lasting impressions that force me to spend some time contemplating what's happened. .hack//SIGN, for example...
After the final episode, many of my thoughts centered around Morganna's lines from the last scene and Sora's fall into a coma.
Then again, I sometimes don't feel much like being preoccupied by such things, and that's when it's nice to have something like Pokémon that I can take at face-value, so I know where you're coming from.

Yeah, I'm a terrible forum troll. Always have been, always will be.
