Fascinating and original topic title, I know!

Over the past couple of weeks I've been putting together a bunch of sprites for a fan game project of mine. Let's start off with some gym leaders I came up with, shall we? (oh yeah, for the record these are mostly just splices, though some parts needed some heavy customization just to fit.)

gymline1.png

gymline2.png

So here we are with ten gym leader concepts I came up with. From left to right: Foxworth (Grass/Water hybrid), Duskwillow (Dark/Bug hybrid), Jet Barrin and his daughter, Tiffany (Fire/Rock hybrid), Captain Ameena (Water-type), King Sarik and Prince Adonnis (Dragon-type), Alice Winterman (Ice-type), Colonel Jules (Electric-type), Bianca (Flying/Normal hybrid).

Duskwillow's design is not finalized. In fact, I've contemplated using the design featured lower in this post. The two pair gym leaders (Jet/Tiffany and Sarik/Adonnis) are not necessarily double battle material. Colonel Jules continues the military uniform tradition of Electric-type leaders. Bianca looks a lot like Whitney, I'm aware. It's intended. (Bianca = Blank, Whitney = White, Blank = White)

trainerline.png

Here are some other trainers I'd worked on. From left to right, we've got Duskwillow's alternate design, a female sailor, a female bug catcher and an alternate Lass. The Lass is pretty ugly and is actually my first mash up ever, so that's why it's awful looking.

rocketline.png

Here we have two members of Team Rocket, the two central figures in the Team Rocket arcs I have planned.

eliteline.png

I've also got several designs for Elite 4 members. However, they'll be silhouetted until more details need to be released.

I also did some sprite work for my new character, Andrea Dennison. I still need to do some work on the portrait (mostly the hair, which I'm clueless about) and I need to create/edit some back sprites, but pretty much everything is there.

pokecenter.png

I also did some work on a large building, but I don't know what style its in. Victorian? Renaissance? *shrug*

So, thoughts? Comments, criticism and questions are welcome.

Note: I'm not open to requests, sorry. My skill level wouldn't be suitable for that, anyways.

Wow, those are pretty good.
I especially like the female sailor and Colonel Jules.

Thanks you two. I come with a small update:

I was originally trying to recreate this guy, but liked the overall design too much, so I converted it with a few quick edits into the design of Larson Reiserben, a childhood friend of Andrea. Both him and Andrea are supposed to be in their late teens/early twenties.

I also realized that the ears on the Lucario hat wouldn't have fit within my self-imposed 80x80 pixel limit, so that was even more incentive to just borrow the design. Originally it was supposed to be a new Poke Maniac look, since they like to cosplay as Pokemon a lot.

Edit: I'm really starting to dislike the above design. I was tired when I made it, so that might be why.

Anyways, I'll just slap down a quick recolor I did in this post rather than bumping. It took all of one minute to make it.

blackursaring.png

Ursaring's shiny form really really should have been black, not green.

This isn't exactly my work (not all of it at least), it's my boyfriend's work. However, he's letting me share it regardless. :p

There isn't a whole lot of back story on this person yet, but judging by the crown she looks like she'd be at a Renaissance festival... There are several alternations, the last one being my own personal touch.

It's based on the first one, which was a quick redo I did a few months ago of the first trainer sprite I ever tried to make over two years ago. She's pretty tall, so we decided to shorten her a bit. No woman should be that much of a giant. :p

leafinvis.png

I made this last night... Now that I look at it, I'm not too in love with it. However, I felt I'd give my favorite character a little love and try making her a DS sized sprite. I also replaced her mini skirt with a normal one because I really disagree with mini skirts.

Got a shit ton of overworld sprites done over the past day or so. They're done in Gen III style, mostly FR/LG but there's also some RSE style in there too. List of who's who from top to bottom:

Dr. Spruce
Professor Ansen
Reginald Kirk
Male scientist (not custom, it's just there)
Female scientist
"Beverly" (just a slight recolor)
Mrs. Fletcher (Done? I'm not sure)
Meredith Dennison
Lieutenant Marvin Dennison
Seargent Jack Reiserben
Kris (this needs to be totally redone)
Brendan (Not really custom, but a recolor)
May (same as above)
Dawn (I may need to rework the left/right sprites)
Lucas
Female fisherman
Lass design
Female bug catcher
Flower girl

Aaaaand, here's Lucas, animated and resized a bit. A few things have been changed since I made this animation, and can be seen above if you're interested.

Despite how much I hate his design, I'm actually pretty proud of how this came out.

love the blue bandanna on may^^

for future reference use the edit button. I don't mean to mini mod, but quadruple posting isn't necessary. if your post hungry welcome newcomers at the grotto.

thanks, XD001

Typically, yes, double posting is a bad idea, but keep in mind how far apart she posted those. There was a week of more between each. And even worse, nobody bothered commenting. If she had simply edited her post, it would have sunk to the bottom and off the page without alerting anyone to the update, so nobody would even think to come back--they think the same stuff is here from the last time they looked!

Anyway, Kate, after looking at your black Ursaring, I agree. Shiny Ursaring should be black. Or white, for a polar bear variant. God, I hope there are polar and tropical variants in Gen V...

Post count matters very little to me, so if I have a minor addition to make to the topic (like a fixed version of a sprite or something) then I'll edit the post. That said, editing a post that's on page two of the forums and two weeks old will not get me any criticism or views... not like what I've been doing has, but!

Anyways, I'll go ahead and post a gif version of my avatar, in case your outdated browser doesn't supported animated pngs.
WarEagle-2.gif

I ripped the first frame (wings spread wide open) from the official Black/White site, then made the second frame based on the trailer released earlier today. Overall, I'm kinda proud with out it came out, though the wing could use a slight bit of work.

There are animated PNGs now? I've worked with PNG sequences for converting Flash animations to video (because exporting straight to Quicktime doesn't work right for some reason,) but I haven't heard of animated PNGs.

fletcher.png

So here's a character featured in Chapter 2 of the fanfic that I should really start working on again, Randy Fletcher. When I originally thought of the idea for the character, I wanted a spoiled brat who would take up the name of someone famous in hopes of tricking the unsuspecting. I originally intended for the kid to introduce himself as Ash, but opted to go the normal route. However, his outfit is inspired by Ash's original outfit, something I intended to do for awhile now.

I believe the format has been in the concept/theory stages for about a decade, but it's only starting to now catch on as support for the format is picked up by more browsers. It's superior in every form to .gif, though at the moment Internet Explorer doesn't support it, which blocks about half of the internet's users from seeing such a file. Perhaps someday Microsoft will drag IE out of the stone age, and I hope sooner rather than later. :p

Looking at my last post, it's been almost a year. Time flies when you're not doing much!

First off, remember those Elite 4 silhouettes I showed in the first post? Well, I guess I'll release the full designs now, since it's looking like the original thing I wanted to use them for is never happening.

ghosthunter_belmonte.png
venomancer_tyson.png
naturalist_riko.png
flamekeeper_helena.png

You might notice there's five of them... I'm honestly unsure of which to choose, I kinda like the designs of all of them actually. I've been toying with the idea of an Elite 5, for when I finish off my woefully underupdated fanfic. Anyways, from left to right:

Botanist Anderson - Those who've watched Star Trek: TNG might notice his outfit under his lab coat is somewhat familiar. As his name suggests, he's a master of the Grass-type. Outside of that, I don't have much in mind for this guy.

Ghost Hunter Belmonte - A creepy old man who believes in ghost stories probably a little too much. He's a leading researcher on paranormal activity all around Storm Island, intent on figuring out and breaking the rumoured curse that surrounds Castle Ambervale. When he's not throwing his life away chasing what's not there, he's using fear tactics to win his battles.

Venomancer Tyson - I don't have many details down on this guy either. I've tossed the idea up and down as to whether he'd be tied to Team Rocket in some way, but I'm not sure of that. As his name suggests, he specialises in Poison-types.

Naturalist Riko - A happy-go-lucky camper who's specialty is the Ground-type, Naturalist Riko is the final member of the Elite 4 (or Elite 5?). I thought about making him a Pokemon Ranger of sorts, since he's a bit of a hippie kind of guy, I dunno though.

Flamekeeper Helena - Fire runs in the family. Flamekeeper Helena is the estranged wife of Cinder Hill gym leader Jet Barrin and mother of Kendle Barrin, an up and coming master of Fire-type Pokemon. There are many dark secrets behind Helena, some of which are the reason she's run out on her family to join the Elite 4 (5?).

kendlefinal.png

Speaking of Kendle Barrin, this is her design. One I'm not really happy with, to be honest. I wasn't happy with her first design either (back when she was named Tiffany). Hell, I'm not even happy with another design I tried out:

kendleb.png

The colours aren't right, but I just can't bring myself to finish it.

dwsr.png

Raven Duskwillow's final design. I had a lot of trouble with this guy, going from crazy, ridiculous looking Indian to an emo pretty-boy, back to a not so crazy looking Indian. Raven Duskwillow is from a remote part of the Unova region, where his fellow community members called him "The Brave". How he settled down on Storm Island is anybody's guess.

(For those wondering, that emo prettyboy design is the basis for an upcoming character in my fanfic, Kamin Duskwillow, this guy's son.)

resizedpsychic.png
resizedacetrainer.png

Just some resized (with minor edits) trainers. Psychic (F) and Ace Trainer (M) for what it's worth.

lass_new.png

I was fiddling with the idea of trainers looking slightly different based on game versions. I don't like this one. There's no emotion on her face, but when I try to fix that I just horribly mangle it.

beauty.png

My take on the Beauty trainer class. They're often depicted as (questionably) beautiful women who look like they have social problems. I went with a different approach. A beauty who's nice.

unfinishedconcept.png

Here's an unfinished concept I started a few weeks ago. I've since forgotten what I was trying to do with this, so I doubt I'll ever finish it or fix up the glaring mistakes.

adlr.png

Pictured above is a mashup of the two protagonists of my fanfic, Andrea Dennison and Larson Reiserben. Larson's new design is the final one I chose, being much better than that garbage I made earlier. It's a little bland, but that's okay.

I believe that's it this time around. Haven't really had time to do much spriting work over the past year, unfortunately. If I missed something, I'll update this post.

I feel pretty bad making such a small update, but I haven't really had the time to explore my artistic talents in a pixel arty kind of way. However, I got a few hours to myself today, so I tried to make a few sprites. Only one is outstanding enough to be shared.

160xSalAdmin.png

This ugly fellow is Salvatore, a Team Rocket administrator and one of the most violent members. He's gone completely bonkers and is impossible to keep on a leash. He was first featured in Chapter 5 of my fanfic doing things that aren't too crazy, but if I get further in the chapters within the next decade, you'll get to see just how incredibly violent he is.

His civilian sprite features some sort of bracer that allows him telekinetic control over small objects, which is something I didn't feature in my fanfic when he appeared. I'm not sure if I'll use it in the future instances where Sal makes an appearance, or how I'll explain how he lost it before he put his true colours on.
