Kengo:recurring or not?

We don't know yet.

He's been given a backstory with Dawn and linked to Nozomi so it's very likely. But we'll have to wait a while to see if he turns up again to be sure.
 
If he does return, I'm just disappointed that he looks like your average filler character. The writers didn't make his design anything special, even his clothes are generic filler character material.

Out of all the male rivals, you can easily distinguish say Gary, Paul or Drew from filler characters because their designs look more unique. Kengo on the other hand looks like any of the countless filler boys that Ash bumped into on his journey.

I don't see how Gary, Paul, or Drew look anymore unique...it's just we've seen them so long they look unique.
 
I don't like him, so I don't really want him to return. xD But eh, if he does, he does.
 
Original character design? Screw that! A hot/cute character is a hot/cute character.
I hope Kengo returns. I think he's cute and I like him with Hikari better than Nozomi.
I just hope that if he does, his episode is better animated.
 
Kengo SHOULD return. He's adorable and awesome, plus he looks cute with Hikari too, 'boring' design or not.
 
I think he should return. It would be nice to see more of Dawn's childhood.I just hope he gets a different contest outfit trough.

He won't return.

The one who is more likely to be a recurring character is Yuuka, the reporter who ALREADY made 2 appearances.

I say no for Kengo and J!

We can say the same about every other filler character from anime.

You could open a thread about EVERY other character. I don't know why Kengo. There's no solid reason to wank over him.
 
Then you obviosly haven't watched the episodes where he appears.

Are we really going to see a rival character with the same line of Pokemon as the main character?

And Dawn has already beaten him with her little Piplup, so what kind of challenge is he if Dawn can already take him down with Prinplup's pre-evo?

The writers NEVER had Ash beat Gary until it was time for Gary to leave the show. Likewise, May NEVER beat Drew until it was time for him to leave the show as well. And thus far, Dawn lost to Nozomi, who is obviously her "main" rival.

Why would they introduce Kengo this early on in the saga and have Dawn beat him already? And before anyone brings up Harley, he was a completely original character that the writers could do anything with, and each time he appeared the writers did something new with him in regards to May.

Do you people honestly think Kengo has as much stamina as someone like Harley?

But even if they end up having the exact same Pokemon, that needn't be such a problem. It could be a theme of their rivalry, in fact. It produces a connection between them, like Ash and May's Bulbasaurs, or May wanting a Beautifly because Janet had one. Besides, they both have other Pokemon; Kengo's Alakazam looked pretty tough.

Yuuka already is a recurring character but that doesn't mean there can't be others. Especially since these two play a role that Yuuka does not affect.

Kengo arrived as an opponent for Dawn's second contest, was immediately given a backstory with her (some of which were hinted at but we haven't been told about yet) and was even linked to Nozomi, her primary rival. How can you not see the plausability of him being Dawn's secondary rival?

The end of J's episode gave a clear air of unfinished business.
 
Yeah, Yuuka only serves as a minor comic relief, and a running gag with the SUMIMASEN! camera dude...I don't see how that knocks out a villianous leader like J nor a old firend/rival.
