It seems this summer, comic fans will be trying to connect actor Kevin Bacon to a Marvel Comics supervillain in seven guesses or less.

Variety has confirmed that the actor has officially signed on as the bad guyalong with actress Jennifer Lawrence as Mystique for Fox's "X-Men: First Class." However, which rogue from the X-Men's storied history the "Hollow Man" actor will play remains tightly under wraps by the studio.

This will mark the second comic-themed role for Bacon in the coming months as the actor recently wrapped a part in "Super" – a comedy send up of the genre starring Rainn Wilson and Liv Tyler. Lawrence is largely an unknown to movie goers with her biggest part before stepping into the shoes of Rebecca Romijn's shape-shifting femme fatale being a regular role on cable sitcom "The Bill Engvall Show."

The pair join a cast that already includes James MacAvoy and Michael Fassbender as Professor X and Magneto and young mutants played by Nicholas Hoult, Caleb Landry Jones and Alice Eve. The film will be directed by Matthew Vaughn from a story idea by executive producer Bryan Singer, and though it hasn't started filming yet, a June 2011 release is planned by the studio.

Was going to post this in the other First Class casting thread...but it's Kevin Bacon.

Thoughts on the casting? Any guesses on which villain he'll play?

Kevin Bacon? Awesome.

Who will he play? Huh. The one character that immediately jumped to mind was Sinister. I could see Sinister working if they focus on his status as a geneticist and get into his explorations of the nature of mutations, depicting him as a mad genius conducting sick experiments on both himself and others. Of course, if they went tht route, it'd be important to do so in a modern, semi-realistic way. There's no reason for him to be so long-lived or to tie him with Apocalypse (unless they planned on having Apocalypse appear in a later feature), and he'd have to look something other than completely ridiculous.

But it could be anyone, possibly someone as relatively unknown as Stryker. I wouldn't be surprised if they went for a human threat in this one; feature some Sentinels, perhaps?

I very badly want him to play Mesmero, but I'm not quite sure why.

I had no idea another X-Men flick was even in the works. Personally, I just wish FOX's right to this franchise would expire, and perhaps Marvel can revive it in some respectable form. No Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen? Probably a fail.

Also, I would've liked to see Apocalypse by now. After the mediocre 3rd movie, I kind of lost interest. Never even saw the Wolverine movie.

What about Graydon Creed?

I'd actually really like that. Bacon's great at pulling off that bitterness. They could have Creed could launch some public campaign against the school, leading to Magneto leaving and Xavier making the institute more private.
