Kindergartner Suspended For Mohawk Haircut
Mother refuses to alter boy's spiked hair, will enroll him at another school.

PARMA, Ohio - A kindergarten student with a freshly spiked Mohawk has been suspended from school.

Michelle Barile, the mother of 6-year-old Bryan Ruda, said nothing in the Parma Community School handbook prohibits the haircut, characterized by closely shaved sides with a strip of prominent hair on top. The school said the hair was a distraction for other students.

"I understand they have a dress code. I understand he has a uniform. But this is total discrimination," she said. "They can't tell me how I can cut his hair."

An administrator at the suburban Cleveland charter school first warned Barile last fall that the haircut wasn't acceptable. The school later sent another warning to her reiterating the ban.

Mohawks violate the school's policy on being properly groomed, school Principal Linda Geyer said. Also, the school district's dress code allows school officials to forbid anything that interferes with the conduct of education.

Ruda's hair became a disruption last week when Ruda arrived freshly shorn, Geyer said. Administrators called Barile on Friday telling her to pick Ruda up from school.

"This was his third infraction," Geyer said Tuesday. "We felt that we were being extremely patient."

Rather than request a hearing to appeal the suspension, Barile said she'll enroll him at another school. Changing the hairstyle is not an option, she said.

"It's something that he really likes," Barile said. "When people hear Mohawk, they think it's long, it's spiked, it's crazy looking, and it's really not."

...

Are these people complete morons or just government officials?

But seriously, I find it hard to believe that a kindergarten would be so petty, I assume there is a difference between a haircut and the kid running around with a running chainsaw, chanting racist slogans.

private schools can completely govern what kind of hair cuts the students can have. If it was in the rules then the parents have no say, otherwise they can make an argument. The parents should have known that before signing their kid up.

I feel for both sides but I'm leaning more towards the school's. If it was a public school, maybe I wouldn't care, but the fact that it was a private school is a WHOLE lot different.

Also, the fact that they've given her three warnings since the beginning of the school year (when it's almost 3/4 finished) is ridiculous as well.

I think the mother is at fault here. She had been given three warnings meaning she knew full well it was against the rules. If she wanted her kid to have a Mohawk haircut in school she should have enrolled him in public schools.

Besides, the picture of a kid in a school uniform and a Mohawk is beyond ridiculous.

This is absurd. I mean, what kind of school *is* that? If the students are getting distracted by a haircut, the teacher isn't doing their job to keep their attention.

And on the other hand, the mom probably did it to push the limits. And yet I side with her more, simply because I was the victim of a "you're distracting the class"-type teacher when I sat differently in my chair. Bear in mind no one but the teacher even *noticed*.

Welcome to private-we own your ass-school. What ever they say goes. You don't like it, tough shit. That's why I'm proud to say I was the product of the public school system.

What the heck? This kid's hair isn't "spiked" at all. No ridiculous colors either.

Oh well, private school isn't for everybody.

My god, what is the world coming to?

I mean, there are worst things going on and to worry about in today's schools, and this is given a load of attention...this is why I'm glad that I'm not in school right now.

Um, didn't one of Angelina Jolie's kids have that exact same haircut? Or am I misremembering?

Anyway, if the kid had dyed his hair blaze orange, I could understand it. But this is just crazy. I'm so glad I don't have to deal with school policies anymore.

Okay, I took a look at the picture, and I really don't see that as improper hairstyle. In fact, I don't see it as a mohawk at all. What I see is just a badly done haircut, which is excuseable. If you ask me, the principal is stupid.

Then again, there's not much you can do about rules. If they are not suitable for you, your personality and your way of life, then you shouldn't even bother being around such a place. I'm one who's learned that the hard way. (In more ways then one.) -_-

*rolls eyes* I'm sorry, but the mom was totally retarded to think nothing would happen, especially if the kid wears a uniform already. And who lets their 6-year-old get a mohawk?

Hey, at my private school you could get a spanking with a paddle in the headmaster's office for owning Pokemon or Yu Gi Oh merchandise. They've given her three warnings, and, well, it's a private school.

Public school would be a completely different matter. But as it stands, she needs to just get over herself and find a more accepting school if she hates the dress code.

if they find out you own it. So presumably if you bring it to school and they find it, but I guess if they heard you talking about it you would get in trouble too... I never got in trouble, lol.

i think that is stupid. they shouldnt suspend a kid for having a mohawk

Yes they should, it goes against the norm. If we don't punish them for not conforming at a young age, then imagine....

....They'll question everything our giovernment does. A democracy doesn't work unless everyone conforms to the norm!!!!

Yeah. I practically worship a group of musicians who wear giant eyeballs on their heads! What are the ramifications for that!?
