So Kingdom Hearts coded is getting a DS port...cool!

This game is just being released outside of Japan due to the No Export For You of coded.

What do you think?

Also there is a TBA Kingdom hearts game mentioned at the E3...

I haven't played Kingdom Hearts (although I might want to; see below), but I'm glad this game has lost its Japanese exclusivity. It always feels wrong when people on opposite sides of the ocean don't get the same thing, so it's nice to see more and more games coming stateside, even if it takes forever after their Japanese release to do so.

And as long as this thread is open, I have a question of my own. I love Disney and tolerate Final Fantasy, so I've been thinking about playing KH, but I don't know if I want to play every spin-off they've produced so far. I know the plot is kind of complex, so will I still be able to grasp the story if I only play KH and KH2 (skipping Birth by Sleep, 358/2 days, Re: coded and possibly Chain of Memories)?

I've been interested in Kingdom Hearts for a long time, so I may finally fucking buy one this time.

I've loved Kingdom Hearts since I first played it in third grade...this is exciting, but what about KH3? that's what I really want.

Ok. I've spent WAYYYYY too much time playing these games, so here's the jist of it.
I would say play just KH1 & 2 By themselves, but even then you would have to play the others to understand the "whole" plot. If you just wanna play them, just to give them a try, then just play the first two. My personal thing to do though, is get the Final Mixes. Those were Japanese exclusives, that included extra bosses, as well as extra snippits of plot that kinda fill plot holes that need to be there. In the US, we only got the basic story. So whatever you feel like doing is up to you.

Erg. OK, thanks. I was hoping the central games would stand on their own. I could go for some of the spin-offs, but I don't have a PSP...

As for the final mixes, I agree; like FFXII International Zodiac Job System, it'd be nice to have those. Sadly, Japanese-exclusivity has claimed another victim.

I mostly agree with MrTurnabout, though it's easy to just play the NA versions of the games and just look up the added Final Mix scenes/content to fill in the rest of the holes. KH2 explains what you need to know of Chain of Memories, though it's a decent game and I recommend a playthrough if you have the time. Days just expands the world and gives background information besides its self-contained plot, but depending on how the next main game plays out, it might become a necessary play. What I hear of BBS is that it's very plot-important, so I would personally watch through the cutscenes even if you can't play the game, just to get the story. Of course, if you play through any future games and get to something that makes no sense, there's always Wikis for that.

ANYWAY.

I'm pretty excited for this. I was kinda disappointed when I heard that it was for mobile phones (meaning no export), but now I have a shot at playing all of the series' games.

EDIT: Huge expensive systems? The PS2 goes for about $100 (less depending on where you buy it) nowadays, and Gamestop/EBGames and other stores still carry games for it. It's less expensive than a handheld, actually.

i can't wait for this and 3DS.

playing 1 & 2 is fine but in order to fully understand you have to play the 'spin-offs'. Chain of Memories explains in detail why Soras asleep for a year and introduces Org13 in a mysterious way, 358/2 Days show Org13 in more detail showing more of their personalities and daily lives, coded explains the message at the end of 2, and BBS shows how it all started. and for the upcoming games you need to play them to understand 3 otherwise you'll most likely be going 'WHAT THE!!!! WHO ARE THEY??????' since one is tieing 358/2 Days, coded, and BBS together, while the other is a bridge to 3 sorta part 1 of the story. but even with 3 the story still won't be over since it'll be the end of the Xehanort Saga so there might be 1 or 2 more sagas coming spanning who knows how many games. i don't think theres enough disney films and FF characters to span another 18 games if they're the same length as this.

I'm not at all interested in coded, but a huge KH fan.
Kingdom Hearts 3 is really what we need, instead of more prequels and side quests.

The most recent KH game was Birth By Sleep.

Wasn't coded originally a cell phone game?

That's what Birth By Sleep is. A KH3.

I want to get it so bad but I need to buy a new DS first I'm saving for the release of the 3DS.
