I just came across this picture and suddenly had a question - look above cilan and there's a group of pics...maybe words?

Just what kind of language they use in pokemon world?

Do they use their creator's language Japanese? Do they use the universal English? Or some alien-like talk we might not know?

Perhaps they use Unown alphabets when writing down stuff? What do you think?

Come to think of it, the characters in the anime never actually wrote stuff on paper and showed the viewers, did they? We don't know what Ash's handwriting is like!

That says 'Pokemon', most BW text is a replacement font for English.

Originally, back in Kanto, there was lots of Japanese text common, but 4Kids erased it all. Nowadays though everything ciphered-out English, whilst using Japanese terms (the travel brochure Ash reads on the plane to Unova invites him to come to 'Isshu').

As for in general however, I'd say people would speak Japanese in Kanto-Johto-Hoenn-Sinnoh and English in Unova (with exceptions).

I see... so they would be mostly modified versions of realistic languages, I guess?
