...at least, the ones with those built-in touch-pad mice. With too much use, it can wear down the flesh of your fingers until they look like this:

That, of course, is an exaggeration; but you get my point. They will wear your fingertips raw.

Have you ever had a laptop (or desktop computer) that was hazardous for your health? Your thoughts on the fingers of the poor laptop enthusiast in the picture?

Not to discredit the thought on the matter, but what is your basis for this?

I've used a touchpad laptop for 5 years without issues. If anything, I've worn the touchpad out, smoothing out the surface in some places. Even if friction at the point of contact were an issue, skin grows back constantly, so it's not like you'll be bleeding from the fingertips from overuse.

Just personal experience. Of course, the laptop I use is a little on the older side, so perhaps they've made advancements in touch pad technology since then?

2012 will be caused by laptops trying to infect the consumer's minds.

And I've used one for 10 years, nothing has came of it but horrible memories.

I don't use the touchpad. I have a mouse.

I don't think I'll rub the skin off my fingers until I've used a laptop for 80 years.

I've never had this problem. But I keep my laptop surface clean and try not to use the touch pad due to how inferior it is to the mouse.

Good thing I use mine on rare occasions. Honestly the one in my laptop sucks..badly.

Our pc's broken and all we use are laptops. But the trackpad of a macbook is more advanced then other mice so that's all I use. And since it is pretty new, I haven't worn it down yet.

The left button on my laptop's mouse doesn't work all the time, so I have to click things with the touch pad. Most of the time, I feel a burning sensation on my fingers (because of the laptop overheating), but it shouldn't be that serious.

Most things are bad for your health when you have it in excess.

I've never been a regular user of a touchpad mouse, but I'm not inclined to think that using them would be harmful in the way described here. In a case of extreme use, you might just develop a slight callous on your fingertip... but wearing your fingertip down to the bone? lol, I doubt it.

That said, they are incredibly irritating; and possibly harmful to one's overall emotional health due to the extreme aggravation that results from trying to use one. I carry around a Logitech Anywhere Mouse MX to use with my laptop.

The touchpad has sensitized my finger a bit, but it hasn't worn down the bone at all, no. I switch between fingers when it gets uncomfortable, and frequently just use a laser mouse, especially for gaming.

I have a callus on the inside of my right wrist, where the bone rubs against my desk while using a mouse, from playing too much FPS on PC. My brother's is worse, and he actually ties a sock around his wrist while playing WoW to avoid pain.

I don't use laptops, I use my desktop PC. I think laptops are inferior. I sometimes steal my mum's to take to college or whatever.

I think it's a bit crazy a theory XD
Playing the piano has crippled my hands over the years. I've got nothing to lose at this point >.>

You ever tried playing a guitar? That will damage your hands, a doubt a laptop Is the thing to focus on.

Yeah, that it will. I have tried to pick up guitar actually, but I sucked. And somehow my guitar splint open on the neck, and also broke a couple strings--I honestly have no idea how that happened, I just picked it up one day and noticed it was like that. So now, if I ever decided to pick it up again, I'm out of luck. Sad thing, too, that was a really cool guitar.

The slight calluses I have from using the pad on my INSPIRON|E1505 just help with guitar/game playing.
