Larger avatar width?

Would it be possible to allow avatars beyond 100px? I don't think 150px-width isn't that huge:

Besides, the user information cell is about ~175px or so (eye measurement).

No! Avatars are suppose to be small. Usually a smaller size than that. Look at my avatar for example. It's relatively small. It actually has a small little photo of Tsutomu from the Special Pokemon Chronicles Episode "A Date With Delcatty." Sigs are much larger, but you'll have to ask someone else because I don't know how to get one. I only posted the link to my user profile onto the serebiiforums so people could know who I am from here whenever they look at the signature on my profile.

To insert a costum avatar like you already have, go to User CP, then click on Edit Avatar. Then click where it says use Custom Avatar. Notice on Serebii, it is impossible unless you are a Mod, but since this isn't Serebii, but it's Bulbagarden, you could. You could either click on Option 1-Enter the URL to the Image of another Website, or you could click on Option 2- Upload Image from your Computer and click Browse and find some saved image and then put it on there. And Voila! You're ready to go. They probably just won't get just as big as mine or any bigger and you're all set. Sigs can't exceed over a certain amount of pixels by the way. The Sig Rules has all to explain about that. I'm unsure.

Edit:
We'd prefer you only had more than 1 image if they're relativly small images. So long as the images are inline and the total height and width of them are no more than 150 and 400 respectivly, it'll be alright. Images includes the Ruby/Sapphire avatars, etc if you intend to use those. We're more concerned about asthetics of your sig with this than the bandwidth.

If the height and width of them are 150 and 400 respectively, I wonder if this has to do with the pixels. If that was large Sig width you meant and not avatar. Avatars are small. Sigs are LARGE! On SPPF, we measure them in something like pixels, and cannot be reached over 400. I hope this answered your question.

With mbit speeds and HD resolutions, I can't see why 150px width would be a problem.

Well if you ask me, I honestly hardly know how many pixels my avatar is. But that doesn't mean I don't know what pixels are. Usually around 1/4 of what Sigs limits are, or even less than that. I'd ask a Mod, Admin, or someone who knows how many pixels avatars are if I were you. I'm not really sure. I hardly know the answer anyway. I'm just only posting useful information I know and that's all I can tell you.

Yours, obviously - mine's 82x100px.
They've been resized proportionately to fit within 100x100px.

Then both our avatars sound like good enough avatars if they can fit within the 100x100px. Your avatar is ok! As for the sig, I believe only a Mod should check that or else I'd get into trouble. You could ask for it in the Signature Rule Thread. On our forums, we have a Signature Check Thread we post in since I came from Serebii first before going onto Bulbagarden and a Mod could check it for you.

There's a few reasons, but the main one is just that we have a fairly large proportion of users still visiting Bulbagarden on computers displaying in 800x600 resolution, and that an avatar over 100 pixels in width is really pushing it as far as their monitors go. It'd stretch the user information column (which has a width set as a percentage) and push everything out of wack.

I, for one, enjoy the 100x100 limitation. It is a nice peramater for attending the scale of what you can create. It certainly is worth making every pixel count.

@Archaic: Here's a 800x600 screen of your post (since you have a 150x150 avatar) and the results don't look too broken.

Edit: Oh and width is not set as a percentage, it is fixedwidth:
showthread.php said:
<td class="alt2" width="175" style="border: 1px solid #000000; border-top: 0px; border-bottom: 0px">

I think avatars up to 150x200px should be allowed, in case the fixedwidth column is retained.

going from 100x100 to 150x150 isnt worth the trouble. anything we can see at 150 we can see at 100 IMO

My reason behind opening this thread is the fact that you can't. I had to get rid of the text from my avatar because of this. Besides, that's like suggesting switching from Standard Def. to HD is not worth the trouble because you can see everything on SD that you can on HD. Besides, switching isn't really going to be much of a hassle - just changing 2 values in the Admin CP.

no its not like sd/hd because its not quality of picture, just a small change in size. just put whatever text u wanna post in your sig banner. avatars are supposed to be small. :)

I wouldnt call a 1.5x increase a small increase. Besides, HD/SD has nothing to with picture quality - they are standard resolutions.
There's no such thing that says avatars must be small. If you hate bigger avatars that much, you could use a greasemonkey script (presuming you use ffx) to resize them to 100x100px.
