Well, after almost eight-and-a-half centuries, the Ottoman Empire is officially put to rest. What do all of you historians out there think of this?

So a pretender who never held power died? It's sad and all, and to be honest there's a lot to appreciate about the Ottoman state but I don't see how this death is "putting it to rest" - the line isn't extinct or anything.

The bloodline isn't dead, not by a long-shot, but the ascendancy to the throne has been naturally disintegrated, in more ways than one.

The House of Osman isn't dead but the proper succession is as now many claimants will vie for a defunct title. In the larger scheme of things this matters very little. The old royal houses no longer hold any real power and the only people who would care for this are history buffs like myself. I don't really care for the Ottomans as they conquered one of my favorite civilizations, Byzantium, but Etrughul's death is a sad note nonetheless.
