After having been hooked on Ace Attorney, a series of games almost entirely focusing on the legal system and its many faces, I retroacted that into Pokémon when I went back and made myself a question about the canon, especially for the games: how does the legal system in every region exactly work?

We have had confirmation that there are security forces, such as common police officers (which are battleable in the games) and the International Police, as we have seen criminals other than those associated with the evil teams, such as the Burglar class. We also know that they can get imprisoned for their crimes as it happened with Ghetsis or most of Cipher, which they certainly deserved after all.

But the thing is, I'm not convinced that there aren't other types of crimes that can't be judged in the Pokemon world, so how do you think it works? What could be an offense and what could not? Are there even trials, or figures such as lawyers and judges, or are they faced against a jury? Could the sentence be aggravated if Pokemon are involved among the victims or perpetrators? Feel free to discuss.

When I played an RPG with someone, I suggested a Pokemon version of ASPCA for the RPG. In the Pokemon world, they probably have laws regarding the treatment of Pokemon. So, if a Trainer mistreats his Pokemon, authorities will take his Pokemon away to place them in safety. They will probably do the same if the Trainer uses the Pokemon for bad purposes, like crimes. I'm not sure what sort of trial there would be, because I'm not good at this subject in general.

I would guess that the legal system in the Pokemon world is similar to that in Japan, since the regions are based on Japan, save for Isshu, which may have an entirely different system.

The Isshuese legal system would probably be an American-based one.

Also, would assaulting someone with a pokémon carry a different penalty than say, assaulting someone with a hunk of rebar?

Why do you guys call it Isshu and not Unova? I'm pretty sure that the courts work like Japan in the first 4 regions and Unova works like the US (which means people can kill their wife or child (looking at you OJ and Casey Anthony) and get off scott free.)
