Upon reading the Bulbapedia article on "Legendary Pokemon", the first paragraph talks about the different classification of Pokemon in Japanese i.e. Legendary, Mythical and Mirage.
I find it quite hard to give each legendary a place in this system.

Bulbapedia isn't up sometimes so here's the article:

Legendary Pokémon are a group of extremely rare and powerfulPokémon.

In the Japanese version, there are three distinct terms used to refer to those Pokémon which are collectively called legendary in English. One, (densetsu no Pokémon, lit. Pokémon of legend), refers to those which are featured prominently in legends, such as Groudon and Kyogre.

The second,(maboroshi no Pokémon, lit.Pokémon of illusions, translated as mirage Pokémon in Pokémon Diamond and Pearl), refers to those so rarely seen that some question their very existence, such as Mew and Lugia; an alternative definition restricts it only to Pokémon not available in normal gameplay

The third is(shinwa no Pokémon, lit.Pokémon of myth), which is a term applied to some of the legendary Pokémon of Sinnoh.

So the are mythical ones the "event" pokemon :Mew, Celebi, Jirachi, Deoxys, Latios/Latias, Darkrai, Cresselia, Manaphy, Phione, Regigigas, Arceus?

Where do the Lake trio Mirages fit in?
Mewtwo should be a mirage as well but it is available in normal gameplay, so does that make it a "legendary" pokemon only?

Are the Dragon trio mythicals?

Someone ought to get a list up of this.
Maybe going to the Japanese Bulbapedia might help.
