Screw the rules, writing is an art, not a science!

As a GM, despite oft being described by some as stiff and overly serious, one thing I have never been is conventional. Every roleplay I've ever started has begun in my own (albeit twisted) mind as a deconstruction of one convention or another, a rebuttal to an old standby - a different way of doing things, to put it simply.

Now I'm not saying that convention is bad. Traditions exist for a reason, and we keep doing things a certain way because it works. But things have never, and will never, improve as a result of us plodding down the same worn out path. So unless you're satisfied with the way things are (where even the best RP concepts wither away after three feeble pages), it's time to try something different.

What are some things we always do in our RPs that we might, flying in the face of all logic, reason and conventional wisdom, not do? What alien form of roleplaying have you always wondered if it might work? Big or small, what might you do differently?

NO-ONE EVER PLAYS AS THE VILLAINS.
It's cause it's easier to RP as a hero team, than some badguys.

REALISTIC RPS ARE BIZZARELY UNCOMMON.
When was the last time anything RP'ed in even close to the real world? Closest one I can think of is Crossed the Line, and that was like, a year ago.

Naw, man, I'm a bad guy all the time!

Anyway, LET'S MAKE AN RP WHERE SEX IS ENCOURAGED THAT DEVOLVES INTO AN ORGY WITHIN THE FIRST 3 POSTS!

Not me, though. Unless it's not against the rules and I won't get banned.

You're not. You're Chaotic Good, tops.

Indeed, very very chaotic. But srs though, I've discussed a hypothetical RP whereby all the PvP Pokemon battles are done on the actual game, but everyone (including, IIRC, Jakku and Pi) was all like, yo dawg yo, Pokemon Online up in hee-yuh, but I didn't feel comfortable downloading something that big at that particular point, so I got discouraged.

I've tried this xD It doesn't get off the ground.

I tried it too, but I got no interest. If there's the interest here I'd be more than willing to give it another go. Especially considering there is an entirely web-based battle sim (Pokémon Showdown).

In fact, taking ideas from this, it'd be cool if the players can sign up as heroes and villains. Players playing agaknst each kther in an RP.

Like the Rogues Gallery? ;-)

I have a theory about that: GM's secretly prefer to roleplay as villains.

I totally remember that exists (runs off to the site).

But it would fit in well with using sims to have a PvP competitive nature. I liked the idea when I first had it, I still like it now. If I may interest check?

I looked at Pokemon Showdown and it actually looks quite good.

I'm pretty sure there have been a couple RPs where people were limited to playing as bad guys. But I've been meaning to start a new RP. I'll be started shortly.
