As a prelude to Generation V, I'd like to begin a series of discussions concerning the untapped well of possible type combinations. Personally, I'm sick of Normal/Flying and Grass/Poison Pokemon; it's about time for an injection of originality.
By my calculations, there are currently 64 permutations of the 17 types that have not been used (including a pure Flying-type). That leaves Nintendo with a great pool to swim in, and us - a community of fakers, speculators, classical guessers - an enormous opportunity to do what we do best: shoot the dark.
Personally, I always get excited in the months leading up to the release of a new generation. I always hope to see the really weird Pokemon show up, like the notorious Fire/Water combination, or even Ghost/Rock and Fighting/Flying (and, by the way, Fighting is the only type currently *not* paired up with Flying).
But those are easy. I could come up with 101 different Pokemon for those type combinations, as could just about anybody else.
My aim in this thread is to look into the more esoteric possibilities. Before Generation V fulfills the dreams of some and topples the dreams of others, I'd like to discuss, specifically, certain options that Game Freak may or may not wind up utilizing.
So... let's talk about the combination of Bug and Psychic. Feel free to do the math on how this would affect damage multipliers, or come up with your own ideas as to what sort of Pokemon this would be. After the discussion gets going, I'll jump in with my own speculation.
Try to stay on the topic of a Bug/Psychic hybrid. There'll be time for other combinations later!
