Licensed games have a reputation of being pretty subpar for a myriad of reasons. It could be because the game's budgeting is rather limited in producing a polished experience, it could be due to the game's short development time, or it might be due to the developers not putting enough effort into making a game since the strength of the brand is enough to sell the game, rather than through the game's merits. As TVTropes would called it: The Problem with Licensed Games.
There are certainly exceptions to this rule, where a licensed game is actually quite fun to play. It could be due to the adoption of mechanics from a proven mechanic (such as Tetris) or it could be due to the game's own merits. The latter is more special than the former because it proves that the developers know how to craft an experience tailored for a certain brand, although the former has the merit of finding a suitable outlet for a current game. Because of the reasonable game design, those games wind up being remembered well.
If there's one recent example of a licensed game remade, look no further from Ducktales Remastered. This is a remake of Ducktales for the NES, but complete with some extra features to be more in-line with a modern game. It has voice acting, updated graphical design and also an expanded story and level content. That's not forgetting the difficulty setting, which makes this game accessible to newer players. Castle of Illusion starring Mickey Mouse is another game with a remake, and like Ducktales Remastered, it has extra features not found in the original.
Personally, I won't mind the Aladdin games being remade, because those games are surprising fun. The SNES and Genesis may be different, but they contain platforming with tight controls.
Are there any licensed games that you would like to see remade, or if you want, redistributed though modern digital distribution?
Thanks for reading.
