Live-Action Cowboy Bebop Film in Development at Fox
posted on 2008-07-22 20:03 EDT
Rights recently signed up by producer Erwin Stoff (Matrix, A Scanner Darkly)

The IFMagazine.com entertainment website reports that film producer Erwin Stoff (The Matrix, A Scanner Darkly) is developing a live-action adaptation of Sunrise's Cowboy Bebop multi-genre action anime series for Fox. Stoff told the website that the project is "in the really early stages" since the parties "just signed it the other day." Shinichiro Watanabe's original anime follows the motley crew of the spaceship Bebop as it travels throughout the solar system in search of the next job. Stoff promised "a real degree of faithfulness," and added, “When I met with them in Japan, one of the first things that I brought up was the experience that we had on A Scanner Darkly, and how hard we worked to remain faithful to Philip K. Dick, and that was our big concern here.”

The anime distributor Bandai Entertainment and Cartoon Network's Adult Swim programming block released the original 1998 television series in the United States, and Sony Pictures Home Entertainment released the subsequent 2001 animated movie. The anime was also adapted into two separate manga series, and Tokyopop released both manga series in North America. A Bandai Entertainment representative was unable to publicly comment on this report.

Thank you to Meghan Grant and Starks for the news tips.

Wow. Assuming they don't screw this one up like they did Speed Racer or DBZ, this could be an incredible movie.

How can you say they screwed up DBZ? It's not even out yet.

And, moving to the anime/manga forum.

My bad, GrnMarvel. I assumed since there was a thread here about the Speed Racer movie, I could safely stick this here.

And the DBZ movie looks like it's gonna suck.

I thought they did a great job with Speed Racer.

>_>

This and the Akira movie is the only one with chances of being good.

Cowboy Bebop really seems like an idiot proof franchise, given the anime itself is a very Western take on some very Western genres (crime, buddy comedy, sci fi), as opposed to Akira, which is... rather Japanese.

This will end poorly.

Yeah, maybe. But...

I'm still excited about the prospect of it maybe, just maybe, turning out good. Due to the nature of CB, I think it has more potential than either DBZ or the past Death Note Live-Action films. Especially here in America.

That is weird... but I can't say that it can't be done.

This will end poorly.

Why are you damning this? For heaven's sake, Bebop is practically tailor-made to be a movie; the laid-back hero, the femme fatale, the killer soundtrack, all of it scream to be brought to live-action. All we need is a good budget, director, writer and cast, and you've got an excellent blockbuster right there.

^What he said.

Although who do you think will get cast? I'd love Samuel L Jackson as Jet, myself...

Samuel Jackson's in everything now-a-days... but in actuality he'd fit the part very well. It's kind of hard for me to pick other actors and actresses though. I also wonder how will this be like the series. Even though each episode's theme was similar it is still very episodic and not connected. They could basically do what ever they want (another reason why it has potential to be a good to ok movie) I say this because I wonder about other characters like Julia or Vicious.

Well, going along with what you said, it'll probably be its own storyline instead of taking on a certain episode's plot. I think they're looking at this as more of an individual property, rather than "let's adapt the storyline to a movie."

Lol, I guess I'm paranoid because if this were a Japanese film, they'd probably try to condense the whole series to two hours.

I think its funny how a lot of people on various anime/ movie forums actually want Keanu Reeves to play Spike xD ( I like the guy, but I don't think I see it >.>). This is probably spurred from the fact that Erwin Stoff, (the man who is going to produce this movie,) is actually Keanu's agent. xD

Really I feel bad for the poor person(s) that have to find someone to play that role. I do feel however, that it would be a role better left to someone relatively unknown.

But, Stoff's words did comfort me a little:
"I have such an enormous admiration for its creators, that our first and foremost concern is going to be a real degree of faithfulness to the tone of the movie, to the mix of genres, and so on and so forth."

Lets hope so. ^_^

On another note, else remember the fake movie poster way back when?

Except Keanu Reeves is a joke now.

I wouldn't mind seeing Dakota Fanning cast as Ed, though.

Keanu was kind of always a joke. I don't know what he did recently that would change that (the last film I remember him in was Scanner Darkly, which probably helped his reputation more than hurt). Physically, he could look like him, though I'd prefer a Thiner build Actor, he's got the black hair. (at least) He'd just need to grow his hair all the way out... he'd just have to do a lot of acting.

he's got the black hair. (at least)

Spike's hair is green. Unless those're just green highlights like how Superman used to have blue highlights.

The outfits puzzle me. I've seen enough cosplayers to know that Faye's outfit looks really stupid on a real person, no matter how well that person fits the role. I think it's the tights that put it over the top.

I wonder if they'll cast a girl for Ed who's mistakable for a boy, or if they'll drop that entirely.
