Week 132: The Donphan's Wisdom
(real tale: The Wise Elephant)
"Wow..." Sachi gasps when she walks into the new wings, which have been expanded. "Now we have more room to store stuff and change into costume!"
"Considering how Brock's stories have caused show attendance to jump, it was only a matter of time until we would need to renovate to make more room." Rylan smiles as he watches Brock run out to meet the enthusiastic crowd.
Onstage, Brock begins his tale for the week. "Once upon a time, in a land far from here, there lived a judge who was known far and wide for his extraordinary decisions. Most amazing of all, the judge employed a Donphan to help him decide his cases, and everyone knew the Donphan was never wrong."
Interested murmurs fill the air at this, but Brock just explains "In those days, Donphans did all kinds of jobs for many people, and people understood they were wise Pokemon. But what the judge discovered, or so people said, was that not only was the Donphan strong and diligent, he understood the hearts of humans. And so whenever the judge was torn -- when he did not know who to listen to or who to believe -- he called upon his Donphan."
"Aw"s fill the air at this. "One day, a family came to court to plead their case." Brock explains. Months earlier, thieves had broken into the family's house during the night and stolen everything they had--gold and jewels and furniture and every imaginable treasure."
Concerned murmurs race through the crowd as Brock intones "When the guard could not solve the case, the neighbors began to worry, and then one night, a second home was robbed, and every imaginable valuable was taken from that house too. When the guard did not find the thief, panic took over. People around town began to worry that their house would be next. They complained to the captain of the guard, who sent his men out around the clock to try to solve the case."
He then assures the jittery audience "Finally, five suspects were arrested."
Relieved sighs waft through the new auditorium as Brock continues "When the day came for the five suspects to appear in court, it seemed as if the whole city gathered. Everyone wished to see justice done. The judge called the courtroom to order, and he asked the first couple who had been robbed to come before him.
"Do you recognize the robber among these men?" he asks in character as Flint.
As himself, he interjects "The woman nodded vigorously and pointed to a tall, slender man with graying hair and a pale face.
"It's him. I'm sure it's him." he declares in a perfect mimic of Sachi
"And that one too!" he adds as a younger man, pointing at an imagined man offstage.
"I've done nothing!" he protests as an older man.
"I haven't either. I'm innocent!" he pleads as another man.
He looks again at the imagined woman. "Are you sure this is the man who robbed you?" he asks in character as the judge.
"Absolutely," he replies as the woman. "When I turned on the light and saw him fleeing, I caught sight of his graying hair. It's definitely him."
"And you, sir, how can you be sure?" he asks an imagined man as the judge
"I'd recognize that man anywhere," he replies as the husband. "He took a ring right off my finger, and I looked into his eyes! That mustache is a certain giveaway."
"But I've never stolen anything!" he protests as another man.
"Neither have I!" he agrees as the older man.
He next walks over towards stage left and studies the two imagined men's faces. "Where were you on the night of the robberies?" he asks as the judge.
"I'm sorry, I don't remember -- it's been months," he stammers as the older man.
"And you?" he asks the other imagined suspect as the judge.
"I was out of the country until last month," he replies as the other man. "I could not have robbed anyone."
"Do you have any money?" he asks as the judge.
"I'm very poor," he explains as the older man, "but I would never take something that did not belong to me."
"Nor would I!" he agrees as the other man.
"And where did the guard find you?" he asks as the judge.
"I was walking down the street," he replies as the older man.
"The very street where the houses were robbed!" he announces in a mimic of Kano.
The crowd applauds Brock's ability to recreate the whole scene using just his voice. "The judge asked more questions, one after another, and to each question the gray-haired man and the pudgy man had answers." he explains as himself. "At long last, the judge stroked his beard and closed his eyes. When he opened them, he announced to the court that he would call upon the Donphan to decide the case. And with that, the Donphan was called into the courtroom."
Nincadas chirp as the audience waits to hear the Donphan's decision. "The courtroom grew silent, just like you guys are now." Brock tells the audience. "Everyone knew the Donphan was remarkably wise and could read the hearts of humans, and the five suspects sat very still and looked at the magnificent Pokemon. The judge watched the five suspect, and he noticed the gray-haired man and the pudgy man sigh with relief as the Donphan entered the room.
A third man, a round-faced fellow, began to smile, and so did the man beside him. But as the judge watched, the fifth man who had been very quiet seemed to grow tense. His face flushed. Sweat dripped from his brow. And as the Donphan was led from one man to the next, the fifth man began to shiver.
Excited whispers race through the auditorium--the unmasking of the real thief is close at hand! "The judge told the Donphan to touch each suspect's forehead, and as the Donphan leaned forward and reached his trunk out to touch each suspect, the fifth suspect suddenly stood up and confessed everything to all that were present. The Donphan lowered his trunk, and the four innocent men sighed with relief."
Applause goes up as Brock continues "The judge looked at the couple who had testified...."
"You see," he explains as the judge, "you must be careful who you accuse of a crime." He then smiles at an imagined Donphan. "I am grateful to have this wise assistant who helps me to take care in my judgments."
He concludes as himself "The next day, a young boy came to the courthouse to ask to speak to the judge. This boy had watched the scene in court, and he wished to know how the Donphan knew so much about human beings. The judge told him that as long as the people believe in the Donphan's deep wisdom, the innocent have nothing to fear, and those who are guilty will be afraid. the boy understood that the Donphan was a fine creature, but it was the judge who was truly the wise one."
The crowd roars as Brock takes a bow...
