So- I just bought the BF AND Kanto box sets. I watched BF first, and finally saw the episodes with Brock's mother...

Then I saw the Kanto eps and Flint said specifically that Brock's mother passed away.

Whazza, ghosts?

I thought they tried to fix things (the mistakes in the dub), I remember somewhere where they said Brock's mom and dad had relationship problems. If it makes anyone feel better, we can assume Misty's parents are dead.

The "Brock's mother is dead" thing from his debut episode was a dub rewrite. Originally, Munou (Flint) told Satoshi (Ash) that she just left them.

Yeah, its not a plothole, she never died in the Japanese version.

For the dub, you can say Flint just made up the story that Brock's mother died while talking to Ash.

Or that the dubbers just ignored their previous rewrite completely. Hell, they probably didn't even remember they had changed it - it was a throwaway line from an 8 year old episode.

Here's the original one for you.

If that's a true translation, I honestly can see how 4kids messed up the line.

Assuming "sick of" is the same term as "sick" in terms of illness in Japanese. And I can see "left the house" being possible with "death" but yeah 4-kids did screw it up.

It was probably changed so that viewers would be more sympathetic with the father and the whole situation in general rather than having both parents abandon like 10 kids. I guess they either figured no one remember/care, or they just couldn't figure out a way to work in an explanation with the dialogue in the episodes she was present.

I have another subs of this episode and there they said she was "fed up with the pain he (Flint) was inflicting on her and left the house". Now, you can guess what translation was closer.

i always figured flint & lola where a spirited like couple

so they do & say stupid things lola a free spirit leaving her family without a care in the world

flint is very emotional him saying lola is dead is just a thing it seem's he would say while in the moment & in disguis

but yea it seem's like a mistake that want be answered unless we have an episode were ash meets lola and ask's about it or a chronicles like episode where misty or someone meets her & ask about it

and dont lola still leaves her family for any reason

The line is "haha-oya wa sonna chichi-oya ni aiso o tsukashite", which just says "the mother got sick of the father('s doings)". It has to be rewritten somewhat to work in English.

But yeah, there's no mistaking what's being said, including him very clearly saying she "left the house".

And here comes the literal interpretation: Maybe Brock's mom did pass away, and Flint just remarried. Does Brock look anything at all like Lola?
