While the "Simple Questions" thread can be helpful I'm looking to learn about how the TCG is now & if it's a good starting point for me to jump in. Especially with all the kewl videos ShukuenShinobi on Youtube has posted, saying nothing but good things about the game. I've been hesitant since YuGiOh & the majority of it's players & fandom aren't very friendly or fun to be around. Just WAY too much negativity. So I hope to find some enjoyment here, in this game & this fandom. Anywhere I should go to learn the basics of the game? Anything in particular I should know before entering? Is the game a whole different beast from what it was in the past? Is it better? Worse? Feel free to add anything else you feel is important for me to know. Thanks in advanced!

i was in the same boat as you, in a way...i myself still play yu-gi-oh in general, but since starting up the tcg for pokemon, it seems i have more fun doing the actual playing...
now is a good starting point in my opinion..because the game used to be much more primitive then what it is now. they have added a bunch of stuff and it's mostly pretty neat.
i would start by (of course) reading the rulebook. After that is planning out your deck and how you plan to play. then play against real people or you can also download the online tcg version to your computer (you have single player campaign as well as PVP against real people too).
so the game is overall better because of the new types of pokemon cards (not really like when they introduced synchro or xyz summoning in yu-gi-oh, but mostly they have additional abilities, stronger attacks, more hp...kind of thing, but still mostly the same way of playing).

Now, this game has "meta" just like in yu-gi-oh, but it never really changes (like yu-gi-oh constantly does). there are regular pokemon and EX pokemon. EX pokemon are basically the meta mostly because better stats and their attacks mostly. there are decks out there where the entire deck has EX pokemon, but that doesn't really mean that they are superior to regular pokemon. i can still beat an EX loaded deck if i know what i'm doing, so it's not a "completely overpowering" kind of meta..(*cough* like when six sam had 3 gateway back in the day *cough*). i usually just don't use that many EX since using them in the 1st place doesn't automatically mean you have any higher change of winning. that is one big difference in this game. it is more about how you play then having a few particular cards that are super OP, like in yu-gi-oh (yeah, i know i'm emphasizing this a lot, LOL).

hope you get to enjoy this game as much as i am. :)

Kewl! Nice to hear that. Yeah, YuGiOh is just ridiculous now. I remember trying to run a Dark Paladin/FHD Deck just for fun on DN & people wouldn't even duel me. They'd just curse at me & quit the duel. Looking forward to a better experience here.

from my experience, i think people will quit in this game for one of the following reasons. i might be missing a few, but i would think these are common:
1. if they see your deck is practically using almost all the cards from a starter, they might quit if they feel it's a waste of time when you wouldn't have any chance to win. (the opposite is true, for if they just want a "free" win, by totally trashing your deck in like..under 5 turns)
2. if you are beating them in a particularly troll way.
3. if you break their strategy in a particular way that they don't like. (something unexpected they might have a harder time recovering from, for example)
4. after a long game, you suddenly pull through or they realize they can't win
5. they know they will or might loose and don't want to admit defeat
6. possibly due to reason 5, they don't want you to feel like you "actually won". (by actually going through the whole game even though they loose)
7. i think reason 6 is bad sportsmanship...all games, no matter what, will unfortunately have such people who choose to be bad sports...

Again, that might not be all of them..but at least i tried to be creative, LOL.

i typically play all the way through so i can potentially learn from the game to IMPROVE..which is what a player would usually want to do. :)

I feel like that's pretty much everywhere. Which is why I avoid lots of competitive things. And when you say "this game" do you mean Pokémon or YuGiOh? Or both? Just wanted to make sure. Good to hear players like you are learning more & more about the game through play & fun.

Alright. Should've known this thing would be unavoidable. Still, seems like a better ride than YuGiOh. Thanks for the insight.

no problem.
i think that kind of thing is going to be present in any card game...you can't really change people to not be like that if they don't want to change.
you just have to move on to the next match, i suppose..
in spite of it, i still seem to like this game more then yu-gi-oh.. :P
one of the other big things that makes a difference is the fact that some of the same things from yu-gi-oh (i.e. particular moves)..can be done in pokemon too, but are much easier to pull off due to the nature of the game itself, so to say....
For example, they let you discard a card from the opponent's hand in this tcg too...but in yu-gi-oh, it's either using x saber gottoms or something else.. :P in pokemon, the way to go about doing that same thing is much easier.....

Yeah. From videos I've seen things are a bit more free form. And it seems like people actually enjoy the game rather than some fake feeling of domination they get from winning.
