Hello,

I played pokemon from red and blue(when I was five) right through diamond and pearl. I just heard about the new game and wanted to ask a few questions.

1. What do you think the biggest changes have been in the series and has anything fundamental changed? Particularly something that would put off fans of the everything up to diamond.

2. Is there going to be a whole new set of pokemon in X and Y or just 100 new ones?

3. Is there a version of pokemon thats considered the best? For instance I thought the Hoenn region offered the most.

4. Is black and white or black and white 2 worth getting and playing?

Thanks for your time

I posted this in the X & Y area and a mod closed and told me to move it over here....

I just said that to let people know because you included a question about X/Y in this thread.

as for the other questions:
1. That's a tough one for me, I'd say things like the Physical/Special split, that's one I can think of that was pretty major.

2. That's tough for me too, I personally consider HeartGold/Soul Silver the best, I thought it was a great remake with nice new features. Pokemon Black/White was also pretty good. It had a nice plotline and interesting Pokemon.

3. I would say so, I personally enjoyed them. Black/White has more of a plot that previous games had, but lacked some post game content. Black/White 2 are unique because they were direct sequels in the same generation in the same region. There were more things included for post game, and some new features as well.

I'll take a stab at #3, Imo heart gold/soul silver and pokemon Platinum had the most content and great story, plus the nostalgia factor for gold and silver is a plus if you have played the originals previously... as such I would consider them the pinnacle of the pokemon video game franchise atm.

Can anyone explain what the physical/special split is?

Also does anyone know the answer to if they are adding a bunch of new pokemon or just 100?

Thanks for all the help guys

The Physical/Special split refers to Gen IV's (Diamond/Pearl/Platinum/HeartGold/SoulSilver) mechanic change of how a damaging move was determined whether it was a physical or a special move. Before that, damaging moves were physical or special based on the move's type, so the Normal-type move Hyper Beam, a special move today, used to be a physical move as all Normal-type damaging moves were physical moves, while Pikachu's signature move, Volt Tackle, a physical move, used to be a special move when it was released in Gen III, as all Electric-type moves were special moves (and, due to the very nature of Volt Tackle, was the only move to cause recoil damage to ever be a special move, while if the Fire-type variant, Flare Blitz, was released before Gen IV, it would have also been a special move). Now, physical moves are typically moves where the user makes physical contact with the opponent, although not all physical moves do so (such as the moves found on this list) (note that there are also five special moves that make contact: Final Gambit, Grass Knot, Petal Dance, Trump Card, and Wring Out). And that's the Physical/Special split in a nutshell.

#3: All of the pokemon games have their merits, and they can be enjoyed in different ways. Personally, I love the Hoenn region because the region is beautiful and the weather crisis was one of my favorite plots.

- Diamond/Pearl/Platinum: In this case, I'd recommend Platinum because the Sinnoh-dex includes a lot more pokemon than DP, the plot is expanded, and there's a lot of things to do post-game. Also, Platinum offers a lot more challenge out of all of Generation 4, imo.
- HeartGold/SoulSilver: They're both the same, with nice additional features from the original Gold/Silver/Crystal games - just choose any of them based on version exclusives you'd like to get. Personally, the encounter cut-scene for Lugia was seriously awesome.
- Black/White: Best. Plot. Ever. The games have a really interesting story-line.
- Black2/White2: Sequel to BW with the plot continuing, but with less impact. However, they offer new features and a lot of things to do post-game as well, including the famous PWT (Pokemon World Tournament).

So summing up
- Best Story: Black/White games
- Best Challenges (battles): Platinum
- Best Features (things to do/facilities): Black2/White2
- Most Lengthy Post-game: HeartGold/SoulSilver

Thank you one and all!

If anyone knows how many new pokemon they are adding it would be awesome if you could tell me.

I've decided against getting Black and White since I expect it to be a lot like x and y which I will likely be getting.

We don't know yet how many Pokemon they are introducing.

And what exactly is the difference between a bunch and a 100? Are you expecting that maybe only a handful of Pokemon are going to be introduced? Because, every single generation thus far has introduced over a hundred so I don't know why that would be expected.

Technically, Gen II introduced exactly 100 Pokémon, as the Kanto dex - including Mew - was 151 and Celebi, the last Gen II Pokémon, is number 251. So while we typically get well over 100 new Pokémon each gen, being exactly 100 isn't unprecedented.

Sorry, I meant equal to or over a hundred. But seriously though, does it matter, does it really make my point any less valid?

Basically. The fundamentals of the game remain the same. They just added new features in with every new gen. Essentially you're still doing the exact same thing as in red/blue and all the way up to diamond and pearl. The difference being now is that you're getting more plot which makes it a lot more fun to train your pokemon. The older games required you to grind quite a lot to be able to get and defeat the elite four. Now you don't really have to do that anymore. They have added so many new items that boost pokemon exp to make it less of a drag. (in the eyes of some players)

Aside from that my favorite title thus far would probably be Heart Gold/Soul Silver and Black&White2. Both we're excellent. Black and White 2 more so because of their story line and Heart Gold / Soul Silver for it's nostalgic rush.

Dark Kyriaki sums it up quite perfectly there!
