Review M19: Volcanion and the Mechanical Marvel

So, we can watch online now?
If there's any official upload online, yes. But I doubt that. It is not allowed on these forums to link to or ask for links to unofficial/illegal uploads. Those in Australia and New Zealand who have seen it legally are free to discuss the movie here however, and others are also free in this thread to ask questions about the dub version to those who have seen it legally.

At this point it's only in theatres, so it's unlikely to be up for viewing until it eithef ends up on Netflix or Pokémon TV features it.

As for the dub:
Racel is Rolly
Chymia is still Chymia (pronounced Kimmy-ya)
Jarvis is Alva
Éliphas is Tesla
Pretty sure Flamel had a new name, but I don't actually remember it.
I'm not sure if Ether or Dogha even had names in the dub, though they could have
Magearna talks in beeps which may or may not be the same as those in the Japanese version
Volcanion has a great voice, basically the English equivalent of his Japanese voice
The music has sadly been replaced by Goldfarb's score again
Stand Tall is used in the opening, along with an instrumental of Be A Hero used during one of the big battles
There is a new end credits song that was named in the credits, but I don't actually remember it or its name. It was pretty slow and poignant.

The movie itself is really good. Alva does a wonderful job of making you want to see him get his just desserts. Unlke the Hoopa movie, the plot keeps moving and doesn't degrade into half an hour of explosions and contrivances. Easily one of my favorite Pokémon movies in a long time. Magearna could have used more characterisation though, but other than that it holds together really well.

I usually get a pokemon movie on DVD. That is what I usually do.

The full version of "Stand Tall" is really nice, i like the instrumental part!
About the ending it's good too, at the starts seems like "Open my Eyes" song.
Here is it the credits of the English ending Theme of this movie:

"Soul - Heart"
Music: Ed Goldfarb
Perfomed by: Dani Marcus
Guitar bye: Stan Cotey
Mix by: Stuart Saltzman

The full instrumental lenght of "Be a Hero" it was a good surprise... i hope someday this will put it on Itunes...

I'm pretty sure Chymia was pronounced as Kimmy-ya in the Japanese version as well. I'm surprised Jarvis is Alva, seeing as the anime recently had an anime character with that same name and I kind of preferred Jarvis. Magearna did talk in a robotic/gear grinding kind of voice, so it probably kept it's Japanese voice. The dub vary rarely changed dub voices if there's no need to. And I like that Eliphas is called Tesla, because of the reference, but from what you've said overall, it seems like a good dub of the original.

Sure, praise the dub for being clever, that's fine. But it's not like the original version didn't also put thought behind the names they gave the characters and the references therein.

Saw this today, and I was pleasantly surprised. Initially, I was a bit worried with it having the stock standard 'not all people are bad' plot - but they did a lot with it, helped by the longer running time.

Meowth would have to be the star of it - the scene of Meowth basically having a meltdown conveying the pain that Magearna was going through was really well done - which is far better than just being the talking puppet for another Pokemon.

I kinda don't think this movie justified how exactly Magearna is a Pokemon. If you can take a section out to interchangably make a powerful weapon, or a Pokemon - you've made a power supply, not a lifeform. Hopefully the games will do that, but it'd be interesting how they align it with this movie if they do.

Volcanion needing to suck in water to function was interesting - though it made me wonder why the solution wasn't Greninja just throwing up some water attacks, rather than going to the steam tankers.

Ash seemed a little too calm about having acid spat at him followed by a saw - yet the only thing addressed was how clean/dirty his clothes got - I suppose they needed to wedge Serena in there somewhere...

The movie also gets bonus points for the multiple Sentret appearances, and is overall a huge step up from last year's movie.

I have a theory as to that, probably because of Marvel's Iron Man, due to his A.I. being called J.A.R.V.I.S and probably wanted to avoid any issues, but that is just me

I'm more wondering about what make Magearna so special. She seems to be less advanced and intelligent than Clembot. Why Clembot is not considered a Pokémon, or a "Mechanical Marvel" like Magearna?

Well that was a great film. I think i'm starting to prefer this over the Hoopa one, sure it has the same plot as most of the other films "Ash meets Legendary Pokémon, Pokémon needs help, Ash and friends help him out" but the longer running time helped made the film better.

Really love Volcanion's English voice, really fits him and far better than the ear scrapingly bad acting of Hoopa (Man listening to that voice made me wanna pull a trigger in Hoopa's face)

Surprised they changed Jarvis's name to Alva, don't think there was anything wrong with that name. Honestly surprised he survived that fall though.

Meowth having a breakdown about Magerena was well done.

Overall it's probably the best of the XY films though I wasn't too impressed with the English music, kinda zapped the excitement out of it a bit but it wasn't too much of a distraction like it is with more recent episodes.

I just got done watching the film and all of those who said it was the strongest film from XY were right. Soul-Heart was a pretty good ending song.

And Stand Tall, I hope Ben Dixon and The Sad Truth continue to make the intro songs for Sun & Moon.

Good to know. I fail to see what it brings to this discussion, but whatever...

This is actually a pretty good movie, and easily the best of the XY trio (although that's not exactly difficult given the total mess the Hoopa movie was). Sadly, the original music is replaced by TPCi's synth score again but this time I didn't have anything to compare it to so I didn't hate it as much as the last two and some it actually fit nicely.

Volcanion is an awesome Pokemon with an awesome voice. I'm not sure who his dub VA was but he did a great job. I also liked Magearna's voice, in that you could kinda make it what the beeps were trying to say without it actually speaking words... also the franchise feels the need to remind us yet again that our talking mythical is doing it using telepathy.

It's also really good to finally have a movie where Team Rocket play a substantial role... and I don't just mean they make an attempt to steal Pikachu or something connected to the plot only to be blasted off. They actually play a role in the plot and are around for a lot of movie.

Also, random final note, this movie marks the first appearance of an Eteboth other than the one Hikari had

Wow I'm really surprised at how much I liked this! Like story wise and action wise it may be one of the better movies yet (and that means a lot coming from me because I rarely admit new stuff is as good as older stuff). I really didn't think I would like it either, I have to admit I didn't like the idea of Magearna at all as a Pokemon, but I really liked how they portrayed it in the movie, and now I really want one (on top of the fact that I just found out it can learn a certain really awesome move...). Just in general the movie had a really good flow to it and was entertaining the entire time. The story really built well on itself and there was also some great battle action. After being pretty disappointed in the last movie, as it really lacked a story and was just a massive battle of legendaries, I think this one really came through.

Do we know if Bonnie noticed Squishy going to complete form? I'm assuming no, but they never really touched on how Squishy returned to Bonnie/she didn't seem to worried about it being gone from her.

It sure came in clutch that Ash has so many flying types, that made some of the battle scenes pretty interesting.

I really also liked the landscape in the movie. The plateau area looked really awesome, plus the mechanical city was cooler than I thought it would be. All in all I am really impressed, especially because reading about the movie I didn't expect it to be so good. I can't believe it got such bad ratings, hopefully people will start watching it and realize how good it is. Can't wait until it comes out of DVD to get a copy. Too bad there was no Pikachu short.

Aside from some weird stuff, top of them being Ash changing his outfit several times despite that band, I found this to be a very strong movie. Way better than the last one which basically served to show us what Smogon's Uber tier would look like in the anime.

In fact, this is my new favourite Pokémon movie. Volcanion is just so beautifully characterised, Alva is a massive dickwad/effective antagonist, Magearna is sweet in its interactions with everyone, and the XY group ace Ash is funnier than I've seen him for quite a while. Poor bugger. XD

I didn't really like it that much tbh, I still enjoyed it I guess but it's not one of the better movies for me. ...the bad guy wasn't even really given a reason as to what he was doing at all either, I guess he was just doing it for shits and giggles.

A lot of people actually though Sean Schemmel was gonna play Jarvis, even I thought it but he did tell me he wasn't playing him and it was even more correct when he wasn't credited so my guess his someone either replaced him or he left.
