I've been rereading this, and it's an absolute delight. And finally I realized what exactly it *is* that I like about it.
Pretty much all the other comics are about going on adventures with pokemon. With the exception of a couple of PokeWake chapters, that's basically what all the others involve.
But MPJ is about living life alongside these creatures; making them your friends instead of just battling tools or soldiers. There's no great evil that needs to be defeated, no lofty goals of being "the best", it's the lives of a teenager and her friends, some of whom are pokemon.
And yet it's not boring. You get involved with these characters. You root for Hazel as much as she fumbles romantically. You laugh at Grandpa and Coconut when they blow up the lab. And Clefairy--who doesn't like Clefairy?
So in short, if you haven't already, pick up this series. The only disappointment is that the translation was ended so early.
