Hey guys... you probably don't know who I am... 'cause I've been pretty darn inactive since I joined two years ago. Anyway...

I was watching the dub of the Pokémon Animé this morning on Cartoon Network... the episode had a lot of references to bowling... now I'm not sure if they bowl in Japan or not, but it would seem they're interested in it. Anyway, during this one scene, Ash & co were sitting down on their knees in the typical Japanese-ish eating thing around a low table with Officer Jenny... eating hamburgers. o_O Yes, hamburgers... It instantly made me think of the Kanto dub episodes where Ash is supposedly obsessed with hamburgers and whatnot. They looked a little out-of-place, but I couldn't really tell if it was a paint edit or not because it was only on the screen for a short amount of time. Has anyone seen the Japanese episode, or maybe have screenshots? I'm curious to know if this is another infamous "rice ball" cover up, or if the Japanese producers gave in and just had them eat hamburgers. Sadly, I have no screenshots to prove my point, but if anyone has seen the episode this morning, they'll know what I'm talking about.

They were eating burgers in the Japanese version as well. So no, it's not a paint edit. PCI doesn't do that editing rice balls into western foods that 4Kids did anyway.

Ok thanks, I was just curious. o.o Never seen actual hamburgers in the animé before.

Considering it was green it looked more like lettuce sandwiches to me. I think meat is off limits.

I don't know what's the big deal of the thread. So what if they edit something out? Not really something to start a commotion about.

It's understandable (some) people would freak out. After all, who could forget 4kids's infamous edits?

Even then, who cares? 4Kids edited stuff, omfg, end of the world! It's not like it ever had any real impact on the story, the food stuff especially. Nothing to get a stiffy over.

Bowling was once extremely popular in Japan. Whjen it faded out, some of the old alleys were converted into arcades and other entertainment-type venues.

It's the fact that they removed something about another culture.

They never said burger in the first place. Ash said sandwich.

Misty: How can you still be hungry? You have four cheeseburgers!
Ash: Did not! I have five!

Misty: Might as well grab something to eat.
Ash: I'm dying for a cheeseburger!
Misty: No way! I wanna eat at a nice resturaunt!
Ash: Cheeseburgers are nice!
Misty: Are not!
Ash: Are too!

they say burger in a lot of episodes, just never say Hamburger. Its always a cheeseburger.

They take over the episodes as their project. They can pretty much do whatever the hell they want with it under the rights that are given to them. If they want Riceballs to be called Donuts or be replaced with a PB&J, they can do that.

At the time, if anything, there was probably some kind of cultural precaution when doing the show. Pokemon, like Dragonball Z, and others, were some of the first, major anime to be shoved into mainstream US in the 90s. And they were probably especially keen about having the show appeal and adapt to American viewers, even if it meant in silly manners like familiarizing foods. Ultimately the same reason why Japan themselves thought about replacing Brock once the show went global. It's all about appeal and how viewers accept it. They were stepping on tip-toes when the show was first big.

Hamburgers are huge in Japan. A lot of series parody McDonald's (remember the Digimon episode where they're back in Tokyo and the group splits up and one group spends all their money on lunch? That was meant to be a McDonald's, but they couldn't *say* that).

Considering that McDonalds usually has Pokémon happy meal toys, it would not be that huge of a streach if there are fast food places in the Pokémon World.

I'm not even sure why this is an issue...

I remember seeing a Hoenn episode with Ash and friends at a hamburger joint and the burgers were in packaging that was extremely simliar to McDonald's cheeseburger wrapping (Yellow with red print I think...). Although the print was of a Pokeball logo... hmm...

They have a "Wacdonalds" in the InuYasha anime and they eat hamburgers all the time.

doesn't a guy named Poncho with a ludicolo promise Ash and his friends burgers when they win from him? (Of course they end up losing and lsoe their lunch)

As others have pointed out, hamburgers aren't *only* eaten in America. It's something that's eaten in pretty much every country in the world, including *gasp!* Japan.

While they have every legal right to make whatever edits they want, that doesn't always mean that they *should*.

4Kids' whitewashing of the series was xenophobic at best. While complaining about it years after the company's stopped working on the show may seem pointless, I don't think it's a bad thing to remind people, every now and then, how bad things used to be. We're lucky we don't have to put up with any more stupid, pointless edits like that anymore.
