Alola everyone! Hey dudes & dudettes! Ya’ll ready to catch some waves? It’s totally radical out there! Gnarley brah!

Okay, I'll stop now.

Available after you complete the first Grand Trial and visit the Alolan Photo Club, Mantine Surf is not only a great way to frustrate yourself (stupid Tentacool and Sharpedo ) but also a great and relatively easy way to earn small amounts of Battle Points (aka Beach Points) for rare item and move tutor consumption.

I didn't see a thread specifically for the latest Poke Ride feature. Thus I thought I would make one! This thread is for anything Mantine Surf related. What are your thoughts on the latest mechanic? Really cool stories you're dying to share or brag about? Likes? Dislikes? Tips for players who are struggling to do well (like me!)?

Also, feel free to upload pictures of your scores as well! If people want to make a Bulbaforum ranking, I would support that :ROFLMAO:

I for one, can't seem to get higher than six BP for the life of me, with my average being 2 per surf :/

Currently at 4 a ride but I'm only at Akala, so I got one route available? And three (four if you count Magikapr) jumps

Aslo, I love it. It's exactly the kind of stupid minigame I could play for hours. The fact it gives out BP makes it all the sweeter

10 BP is the highest BP I've gotten and that was when I was beating the beach's high scores too. So I assume 10 is max?

It's fun. I don't think it's amazing or anything, but it's a nice little addition and Mantine getting more spotlight is fine with me.

Surfing is pretty fun or at least it was until I got to the wormhole riding and became addicted to that instead, although it has been a bit difficult for me to figure out the correct rate at which I need to flick the Circle Pad in order to execute the tricks. But I usually net 6-9 BP from it, and I love having an easier method of generating BP (in addition to my Bank farm).

I think it's fun but I'm only past Melemele so I have one place to surf.

As a casual player and not a battler, the BP don't matter to me. But I do think the mechanics could use work. I don't like that you have to go to the tippytoppy to gain speed because if you don't switch fast enough then you go off the wave before you're ready. And gaining speed takes too long for my taste, especially being stuck with wide turns and annoying pokemon, which sucks because you can't gain enough air to do actual tricks otherwise.

I will say I'm super glad about how they did the tutorial of it. Just reading my way or doing something interactively makes a tutorial so much better, and I hope that they consider the system for future things in pokemon to make it at least somewhat easier on experienced players.

Best minigame since PokeStar Studios. I would probably have finished Ultra Sun by now, if I didn't spend half of my time playing Mantine Surf. I haven't gone to Poni yet, but my high score is about 68-69k. Samson complained about not being able to beat Grimsley no matter how hard he tried, but I beat him on my first try.

although it has been a bit difficult for me to figure out the correct rate at which I need to flick the Circle Pad in order to execute the tricks.
In my experience, I like to start immediately after I jump off the wave. When Mantine is finished its maneuver, then I immediate go into another. You can get two, sometimes even three maneuvers in one jump if you time it right.

Just got to Poni Island and got a high score of 60k. Honestly, I think I'm developing a natural instinct for this minigame. Anyway, I know a few people get stuck on this course, since the path full of obstacles. The trick is to jump in the air when the path is too clogged with obstacles; the map will reload what's in front of you when you get back down

i want to exit
We all do, man. We all do.

Nnope 10 BP is not the Max.. I've gotten 16 BP in one run on the Hyper course (Ula'ula) when I beat my previous record of 92,292 with 101,727

Even while I only get about an average of 4BP per surf, I prefer this majorly over having to do 4 Battle Tree battles, which take way longer. I also love the music and the surfing looks absolutely beautiful at night too.

I have to agree about it being a bit too hard to pick up speed though, I still just can't get it right. Would've enjoyed the game more if it was just jumping up and doing tricks but I guess that would be too easy :p

I'm getting slightly better at it. @Soki your advice on another thread about building up speed has helped a lot. I've now been able to (barely) become number one on both Melemele and Akala.

The BP is slowly coming in and my Pikachu now knows Electroweb. :D

Actually, you know what? The Poni courses are fucking horrible. You just have to pray you get lucky and DON'T have three Sharpedo on your ass when you come down from a jump, or run into ten Wailmer and thirty Tentacool right at the start, preventing you from gaining any speed. I like challenges and all, and I can manage, but since there are so many obstacles jammed together and there's not really anything you can do about them half the time, it makes for a slow, bumpy, and aggravating ride.

I get that Poni Island is kind of a shithole, but come on.

I really like Mantine Surf a lot. It's a good minigame, imo. So far, I usually get 9 BP per run, which is super useful for move tutoring (so glad they're available during the main game!)

EDIT: For reference, I've only done MeleMele and Akala surf spots so far.

My record for the Poni beach is 90,272.. The obstacles are rather a pain but my scoring hasn't taken that much of a hit from them.. My advice is to keep up on the wave when it's a big wave and shorten your movement while gaining speed. if there's too many obstacles, or when it's a low wave just keep an eye on the obstacles ahead if you think you can maneuver around them then go ahead (will likely take some practice to develop speed and trying to avoid them at the same time) .. If it looks too difficult to navigate then just hop over them. Can't really control where you land as you're likely going to take a hit.. Also unless you're avoiding things and don't think you'll have the air or don't have the ability to use lanturn 360 or Primarina Twist never use the gorebyss and Huntail options. You'll always get more points by combining Lanturn 360/Primarina Twist (depending on the wave) and Starmie 720. Timing over-the -Gyarados after one of these combined trick jumps can net over 10,000 points. Lastly I've noticed that you get more points if you delay the finish of a move near the end of the jump if you're still able to get a perfect landing..

... And i just beat my record again for Ula'ula island (hyper course) again.. 110,187 as opposed to 101,727..

I always stay high for the Sharpedos and try to ride up the wave as they approach. While it's best to try to get as big a boost as possible before jumping, don't be afraid to jump and perform small combos if that's your only way to avoid an obstacle.

Doing the same trick and/or combo repeatedly seems to make the trick go "stale" and net you fewer points each time you repeat it consecutively.

Biggest tip of all time:

Don't go night surfing. The sea is a much deeper, darker, blue - thus, the obstacles are a lot harder to avoid because they blend so well with the area. Especially the Wailmer shadows: some of them are practically invisible.

I literally saved up 100 BP from this minigame alone to get an Ability Capsule when my best Houndour hatched with Early Bird instead of Flash Fire. I'll take this over the Battle Royal pain in the ass myself.

From what I can tell...
it looks like Grimsley is the rumored surfing champion in a kimono. Is there some sort of subplot with him in the game or does the game only mention him from time to time?
