I was wondering why in movies and maybe anime episodes, most legendaries minus those that are based on monsters (Groudon, Kyogre, Rayquaza, Diaglaa, Palkia etc...) always speak in human language, not say their name like most pokemon.

I have wondered why this was so?

Because they're have a high level intelligence. They're like gods of pokemon world.

Well, Mewtwo and Lugia were telepathic, and Entei was made-up anyway.

Mewtwo had Psychic powers, 'nuff said. If I'm not mistaken, Lugia can learn psychic attacks as well? Only the Lugia we saw in the movie could speak...the Lugia we have seen in the anime didn't appear to be capable of human speak.

I always got the impression that we were hearing Entei speak human only so that we could know what it was thinking. " If that is what you wish." *tender moment*

And Lucario...well, I don't really have an explanation for that, except that maybe the fact that it controls aura has something to do with it.

Maylene's and Riley's Lucarios should have been able to talk as well. It didn't make sense that the movie one could talk but they couldn't.

Well, they should have said something as Aaron's Lucario did, instead of making grunting noises.

Those barks were awesome and cute.

I think they only wanted the one in the movie to talk to empasis just how special that one Lucario was.

I was going to suggest that the Pokémon we've seen who have spoken human language have had to undergo an effort to learn how to speak that language (like Meowth), but that doesn't account for Mewtwo, who was born with the ability. Manaphy, however, slowly learned words...

Perhaps the reason why some Pokémon in movies were given the ability to speak in a human language is so that the movie audience would be able to connect more with these Pokémon characters. Unlike the cartoons, where Pokémon are usually treated as background characters or just as "accessories" for the human characters, the legendary Pokémon are the main focus of the movie. If they are to experience character development that the human characters enjoy, then they must be put onto the same "level" of anthromorphism as the human characters are.

The way I see it after long thought is that in movies, would we know som much what was going on if the pokemon only said their names or growled rather than had human speech?

How much would we know if Jirachi just said its name or growled and not telepathically talked to Max? Its been shown in anime that some pokemon like Meowth can talk and have learned to, so it nothing too special really.

I assume that having Psychis or Paranormal abilities helps. Remember the Gastly from " The Ghost of Maiden's Peak"?

Then again, we haven't seen any Pokémon like that one in the main anime since that episode. Aside from Meowth I mean.

Well, you have Slowking. Like I said, having Psychic or Paranormal abilities helps the Pokemon talk. Other Pokemon can like Meowth, but that takes a long and sometimes hard process..
