Apparently they're going to push the Avengers so far down our throats that we'll HAVE to swallow. I'm a HUGE Avengers fan, but even I think this is ridiculous.

The new series is "Avengers Classics." It will reprint the series, starting from issue #1, and include original back-up stories set in the period that the main story takes place. Sort of an "and this also happened", I guess. But they'll also contain the original letters pages, pin-ups, and similar things, which is a nice little extra.

Source with cover and info on issue #1.

Fourth? Is this including Ultimate Avengers and Young Avengers, or am I missing something like Avengers Xtreme?

New Avengers
Mighty Avengers
Avengers: The Initiative (revealed a couple of weeks ago that it's been switched to an ongoing)

Avengers Classics brings us up to 4. And I wouldn't doubt a few mini-series popping up. And, of course, there's the New Avengers/Mighty Avengers issue of Fallen Son.

It actually sounds fairly cool to me. Not to mention a sneaky as damned fuck way for people to write new Steve Rogers stuff...

You know, I actually never cared much for the Avengers. I prefer Marvel, but I just see better things in the Justice League than in the Avengers. I suppose that's just because I like the interactions of the JL's Big Core members (Superman, Wonderwoman, Batman, Martian Manhunter) more than I do the Avenger's core members (Cap, Iron Man, Pym, and Thor). I guess that's because even though the JL team isn't close knit, they all have respect for eachother and have a focus on the goals at hand. The Avengers are more close to eachother, but they're also more prone to infighting and competition for glory. I guess some people enjoyed that, but it never sat well for me on Superteams that are supposed to be THE BIG TEAM of their respective universes.

Also, now that I think about it, I find the minor members a lot more interesting in JL. You have very entertaining characters like Flash and Green Lantern. And even the weakest members like Booster Gold and Blue Beetle have interesting personalities. The Avengers on the other hand, too often suffered from letting ANYONE in, like Swordsman, Hercules, Wonder Man, Triathalon, Black Panther, and Black Knight and other losers too numerous to count, who not only had boring powers, but boring personalities. The only supporting character who ever held my interest was She-Hulk, but the Vision occasionally had his moments when he was portrayed as more than just Marvel's take on Martian Manhunter.

The Ultimates is by far my favourite version of the Avengers but even so, Cap and Iron Man make for a good duo, regardless of whomever else is involved. That's pretty much the core reason Civil War was able to get away with the whole "Divided World" sort of deal, 'cos you had these two people on opposite sides you could believe that it could really split anyone or any team up.

Can't stand 616 Thor though.

You just haven't read the right stuff. If you read the 280s, you'll find a very deep and interesting Black Knight (plotline that made me a fan of his). Hercules had a great moment in the 270s, prior to the Masters of Evil invasion of the mansion (also, a truly great arc). And Edwin Jarvis really shined in the Inferno arc.

As for infighting, that's fairly rare. Aside from early Triathlon, early Hawkeye, and a handful of others (Rage comes to mind) in their early days, it's very rare (stay away from the 360s).

A lot of people say that. Do you find fault with the accent, the costume, or something else?

Personally, I don't get the whole "is he a god, or isn't he?" thing they have going with Ultimate Thor. Or did they ever resolve that?

I haven't read the second part of Ultimates 2 myself, but I think it is confirmed that he IS the real deal. Most of Ultimates 2 revolves around the question, but I'm pretty certain it's confirmed by the end of Ultimates 2 that Loki was indeed playing everyone.

As for 616 Thor, the Costume is indeed pretty lame but it's the speech more than anything that annoys me I guess.

My first real Thor comic I read though was the Ultimates, so I could just be baised, but I definitely find Ultimate Thor much better and more interesting to read. And they did definitely get me questioning whether or not he was a God during it, so I guess they pulled off that idea well enough.

Yeah, Ultimate Thor IS a god. Loki was just screwing with him and everyone else.
