Marvel Announces Ultimate Spider-Man Cartoon

For months, fans of Marvel Comics web-slinging wonder have been curious as to what the small screen potential would be for Spider-Man since Sony relinquished rights back to Marvel for animated and television adaptations of the iconic superhero. Would the Sony-produced "Spectacular Spider-Man" somehow get a third season? Would the character be rested while Marvel geared up their big "Avengers" push?

Today, the answer came in the form of "Ultimate Spider-Man" – a new animated series produced by Marvel and set to debut in the fall of 2011 on cable channel Disney XD. Word first hit as part of the MIPTV conference currently being held for TV executives before Marvel made the show official by releasing a teaser image on their website.

"'Ultimate Spider-Man' will be a unique journey exploring our favorite web-slinger as he teams up with other fan favorite Marvel Super Heroes in never before seen stories with a new life filled with great challenges, new friends, intense action and character growth," Eric S. Rollman, the President of Marvel Animation explained in the release.

And for fans wondering how close this new series would hold to Brian Michael Bendis' long-running comic series of the same name, the writer held court in a series of posts on his Twitter page saying, " don't have much usm cartoon news. not involved with it at the moment. working on powers tv and fire movie for universal – and comics, but I do know the pitch and it sounds pretty, pretty , pretty cool.

"[If] you want to see some USM cartoon stuff with me and bagley's finger prints on them, check out the USM VG from a few years back."

In the image released by Marvel, several character familiar to the readers of Bendis' comic are visible including Ultimate Nick Fury, Nova (who may or may not be the Ultimate Rick Jones under that helmet), Iron Fist and the new super alter ego for Mary Jane Watson recently seen in "Ultimate Comics Spider-Man." Villains such as the Green Goblin and Doctor Octopus are also visible.

How will this be different from Spectacular Spider-Man, the MTV series, or the 90s series? No clue. Should be interesting to see the finished product, though.
 
Oh fun. While I love Ultimate Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson!), I'm not a fan of the Ultimate Universe.
 
How many more comics need to be ruined before they finally stop with the cartoon spin-offs?
 
Well, wait a minute! What's happening with Spectacular? Are you going to go ahead with a third season, or are you just going to leave things hanging where they are?

Seriously, Greg Weisman is like the Joss Whedon of animation. Anything he's put in charge of doesn't make it past two seasons. (Yeah, yeah, Buffy and Angel lasted for eight combined years...)
 
Spectacular Spider-Man has been on the backburner for 2 years now. The entire crew was laid off at the beginning of last year and even Greg Weisman has moved on at this point. The shows DOA at this point which is a complete shame as it had so much promise ruined by corporate apathy.

As for this news, while it sucks the current show had to be the sacrificial lamb, I hold hope it'll be just as good or at least hold up by its own merits. I'd hate for it to go the way of The Batman.

Spectacular Spiderman was canceled. Its possible Wolverine and the X-men is canceled too.
 
As far as I can tell, they haven't made any official statements regarding Spectacular, so I'll hold out for a little longer, as silly as that may seem. I'll admit, though, that this does seem to be the final nail in the coffin.

A second season is currently in production actually and it's one of Nicktoon's top rated shows too. (Well scratch that I just heard the news... It was one of Nicktoon's top rated shows though.) I had a feeling this news was coming for a while with all of the other Marvel cartoons currently airing, with the exception of Black Panther (Which probably will never end up airing in the US at this point anyway), had been picked up. My main issue with this is that it sounds like a crossover show, which Marvel already has (Well, sorta...), and that even if it isn't a crossover show SSM already was about Spidey in high school...

I'm kind of curious how this will turn out... Disney XD has tons of Marvel, Saban, and even their own older shows to air, yet all they usually do is air Sweet Life and Corey in the House all day long, SSM sometimes on weekdays when no kids are around to watch, and then shaft other shows that would probably do great on a boy oriented network to the late shift(Gargoyles comes to mind airing at, I believe 2 or 3 AM.), and in one case at the end of a girl oriented block in a time slot that most networks choose to skip in favor of local news, Power Rangers on ABC if anyone was wondering. Then there's back when they were airing the horrible Avengers cartoon and Spider-Man Unlimited over X-Men TAS. I'll never understand the way network execs think...

Really? what did you hate about it?

If you ask me, it is the best x-men (and arguably marvel) cartoon since the animated series, arguably better if you can hold back the nostalgia. Most people I hear that dislike it hate Wolverine with a passion, enough so to just hate it for the title alone.

This show, who knows? It sounds like a cross-over series to me as well, and the other marvel cross overs I can think of is Super Hero Squad and Spiderman and his amazing friends, both of which aren't among my favorite of cartoons... to say the least... But I'll give it a fair chance.

I liked Spectacular Spiderman, but I wasn't a fan of its pacing. All the good plot points were used up quickly in the first season, and made less of an impact when they occurred... but I understand why they would rush out, like Wolverine and the X-men, that show went through hell!
 
Oh, hell no.

They did not just cancel the greatest Spider-Man TV series ever before its time was up to replace it with another Spider-Man show set in high school. Why even bother?

And we might get to see Mary Jane as the Demogoblin? Oh joy. :|

(I do hope for Kitty as a major character, though. Her relationship with Peter was a stroke of genius.)

I loved Wolverine... and it was doing so well.
 
Not quite so upset about Wolverine and X-Men. I never really got into it. Although now I'm wondering if they'll make an Ultimate X-Men show too. o.o

Yeah, don't care for Superhero Squad at all. Why isn't that going away? Also, while we're on the topic, what do people think about Armored Adventures? I haven't actually seen it yet.

Back to USM: "It'll put Peter Parker in some pretty weird and unusual circumstances"? I'm crossing my fingers they keep the Ultimate version of Spider-Woman: a female Peter Parker clone with all of his memories in tact. 8D That would almost make Spectacular's cancellation worth it.

I hated it because, IMO, it had choppy animation, poor scripting, and WAY TOO MUCH FOCUS ON WOLVERINE. I mean, the friggin' TITLE of the show gives him top billing! Wolverine's a nice character and all, but he's become way too popular and overused for his own good. Marvel needs to do something original with him already. Give him more of a personality besides "darkhorse badass Gary Stu."

I have to agree. I mean, Wolverine's a cool enough character on his own (X-Men Origins: Wolverine was pretty good, giving us a look at who he was before he became an angsty badass loner), but he's way overused. I know he pioneered some of the traits that are now considered to be Gary Stu-ish, so it's not really fair to call him that, but by this point he's sort of become a self-parody.
