Revealed in Marvel Comics' Ultimate Fallout Issue 4, out Wednesday, the new Spider-Man in the Ultimate universe is a half-black, half-Hispanic teen named Miles Morales. He takes over the gig held by Peter Parker, who was killed in Ultimate Spider-Man Issue 160 in June.

In his first appearance, he simply breaks up a fight. But readers will learn the true origin of Morales and how he became the new Spider-Man when Ultimate Spider-Man relaunches in September with a new No. 1 issue.

"The theme is the same: With great power comes great responsibility," says writer Brian Michael Bendis. "He's going to learn that. Then he has to figure out what that means."

The new Ultimate Spider-Man series, as well as Wednesday's Ultimate Fallout issue, will be available digitally the same day as in stores.

In the regular Marvel Universe, Peter Parker will still be the same web-swinging Spidey as he has been since his first appearance in 1962. But in the Ultimate line, launched in 2000 to tell contemporary stories, he received a new origin and a reimagined supporting cast that paralleled the Spidey in regular Marvel continuity.

Morales' journey will be a similar vehicle for today's fans, says Marvel's editor in chief, Axel Alonso.

"What you have is a Spider-Man for the 21st century who's reflective of our culture and diversity. We think that readers will fall in love with Miles Morales the same way they fell in love with Peter Parker."

In addition to an alliterative name, Miles has a connection to his predecessor in how he received his powers. But he will have different abilities, too. Supporting characters such as Peter's Aunt May and Gwen Stacy also will give Miles nuggets of wisdom to help his transition from young kid to New York City superhero.

Italian artist Sara Pichelli, who was integral in designing the new Spider-Man's look, says, "Maybe sooner or later a black or gay -- or both -- hero will be considered something absolutely normal."

The man behind the mask.

I really like this. It's a nice twist on things and feels somewhat natural. Plus: First major Spider-Man change in almost a decade that DOESN'T involve a deal with the devil. That just makes it better.

I honestly don't care about his ethnic origins.

It's nice to see that it appears that other people (AKA the writers) think the same way.

Like with every other comic, if the story is good and the art is well done, I'll read it.

Just saw this. I think the idea is pretty cool.

I don't care about Spider-Man so I don't care. Plenty of superheroes have passed their names down (mostly in DC though) so who cares? I am really sick of this widespread viewpoint that whiteness is the default and therefore anything else is ~unusual~ and should be reserved for its own little tiny segment of entertainment.

I think what people fail to notice is that this is Ultimate Spider Man and not the regular Spider Man. They're two completely different things to me. What little I know of the Ultimate Universe thanks to Linkara makes me think this means little in the grand scheme of things. This is just Marvel using silly gimmicks, which is sort of what the Ultimate Universe is about, so it makes no difference.

I read about this a while back and got pretty excited, but I still haven't got the chance to check out the new comics yet since his debut. Personally, I think Spider-man is a bit too emo these days, well at least since the last time I've read it and the few times after I've flipped though pages. For all it's complaints, to me it's like Narutox1000, I don't mean to say it isn't justified, but sometimes it's like I'm reading a daytime soap.

Personally I think Miles should have just been given a new Spider-man series instead. This just seems, from the description here, to be inappropriate. I don't care if it was superbaby, adults should not give kids advice on how to go out and be vigilantes or guilt them into risking their life. Even if they have super powers, it's irresponsible and downright devious especially if it isn't your child. Also with him taking over as Ultimate Spider-man, I imagine it's only a matter of time before Peter comes back and Miles becomes his sidekick to getting his own spin-off.

I also hope they minimize the Black/Hispanic cleches... I mean... it would be nice if it turned out he wasn't from the ghetto... or if any of his family members or close friends are not related to gangs. It can still be written for/ as a minority without having to do something like that :p lol. I also hope the "new powers" aren't something like Electro webs or super sonic speeds (although that would be hilarious). Also, if he is suppose to be gay like the mumblings I've heard, I hope he doesn't have a horrible death, lol.

I still like the character, but I feel pretty skeptical over the whole thing. It also makes me wonder if Peter will die at the end of the new movies coming out.

If this was the main Marvel universe Spider Man, readers would send death threats to Marvel, I personally think this is the worst thing Marvel has ever done to Spider Man since One More Day. While I don't know a lot about the Ultimate Marvel universe, I am still angry at this move Marvel made, I mean really, why replace Peter Parker with a token minority, why couldn't they just make Miles his own superhero and own series instead of replacing an already existing one, it's POINTLESS!

Face it, if it's not Peter Parker wearing the Spider Man suit, it's not Spider Man at all...

Spider-Man 2099 would like a word with you.

Marvel's FIRST half-Hispanic Spider-Man.

Well that's just silly. If Hal Jordan had been the only Green Lantern, we'd have never gotten the magic that is Guy Gardner, or the icon that is Jon Stewart (and, really, we'd never have Hal Jordan. It would be Alan Scott. No Green Lantern Corps, no Guardians, no Green Lantern mythos). If Tony Stark had been the only Iron Man, we'd have never gotten the awesomeness that is War Machine. If Steve Rogers had been the only Captain America, we'd have never gotten the staunch conservative known as John Walker, or Bucky Barnes, the first Cap with a gun. Hell, if we only went with the original characters, we'd never have Johnny Storm as Human Torch. There goes the Fantastic Four, and without the Fantastic Four, you have no Spider-Man. And now you've single-handedly destroyed Marvel Comics.
