I feel this deserves it's own thread just out of the pure atrocity of the story at hand.

A horrible event unfolded today at Virginia Tech University revealing something much like the gruesome events that took place at Columbine HS a few years back.

A student gunman, loose on the campus of Virginia Tech killed an estimated total of 30-32 people and then himself by latest reports. Almost as many were injured. This has become a rather horrible tragedy and even more-so due to the fact that this event is now the worst shooting spree in the history of US schools.

It's quite unthinkable to know this happened, a single student going on a rampage and even reports of a second wave of violence after the police had the campus on lock down.

Even though it's rather remote, I'm shaken by how it all went down since I'm now noticing how our sardine packed rooms are extremely vulnerable for happenings like these.

This is so closer to home for me than other shootings, cause I live in northern virginia, and I was in Blacksburg last December...

Just sick. Why do people who haven't had the chance to do anything with their lives have to die? Why?

As my father would say. "Shit. Fuck. Fire"

Another reason I always keep my dormroom locked. And Bush's response was just sickening.

Man, Tech is like thirty minutes from my house...-.-

I wonder if this will affect my High School? We recently had three bomb threats.

You know something's a big story when you find out about it on the main news page of a Transformers fan site.

This is...wow. The big question that comes to my mind is: Can you really change ANYTHING about schools to make them any safer? Basically, can we really stop this from happening again? Because...it seems like we can't. And that's a scary thought.

Living on a college campus I can say it's way too easy to bring a gun onto campus for the sake of going on a rampage. You just drive in with the gun in your shirt and start opening fire.

Still, campus police should have dealt with this freak before he could go at it again.

I know one very easy way to stop it happening. One would even say the smartest way but meh, American Politics and smart are not synonyms.

It really hits you hard when you're at college, and you live in a dorm room, and you see just how easily this could happen. It's also sort of close to me...you know, Virginia Tech is only a few hours away from App State, where I'm at.

It's scary.

And the really, really scary thing is that now you have to watch out for a copycat killer.

My heart goes out to the families of all the students that were killed or injured. Like, I'm all my dad has. If something like this happened to me, it would destroy him I'm sure.

Someone HAD to bring Bush into this, pathetic. -_-

This is just sad. There is nothing more to say. This is just 1 more reason why I am against group schooling.

I thought that there was a federal law against bringing guns onto campus, which was why our campus police couldn't have them.

It is a federal crime. However, there are no measures to prevent Joe Shmoe from bringing a gun on campus.

At least at my school, which is public, anyone can enter any buildings or areas on campus from early in the morning to about 9 p.m. most nights. You don't have to be a student to "use" the buildings and area. Someone wanting to bring a weapon or bomb on campus would have absolutely no trouble as long as those items were kept hidden. We don't have security cameras (to my knowledge), either.

When something similar to this happened in the UK (Dunblane), every single school up and down England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland were tightly locked up. You can't enter any school now without being buzzed in (except obviously right at the start of the day before registration starts), most of the gates are locked during the school day and there's absolutely no chance of anyone getting in who isn't a student or has prior reason -which is explained to the receptionist/s - to be there.

I'm... amazed that something hasn't been done to secure schools in America when the chances of something like Dunblane happening over there are obviously far greater than they are here.

Most non-college/universities in Oklahoma are like that. The problem is that with universities and colleges you have people arriving at all times of day and leaving at all times. While it works with primary schooling where students largely arrive at a set time each day (though that wouldn't stop someone from sneaking a weapon in), it doesn't work with every school.

So wouldn't it be better if we allowed for people who have proven that they can handle a gun (say, campus police, those who grew up around guns, etc.)to carry concealed handguns?

It's obvious that the crazies are going to get their hands on weapons anyway, no?

Truly insane... Hopefully this won't cause colleges to take away students' right to breathe.

If only they hadn't done this by email, though, and after two hours. I mean, honestly, that was just the dumbest move ever... I'd hope that my own college wouldn't do something like that, though we do have a mainly-email communication system. They gotta think, people aren't going to check their emails first thing in the morning, especially if they're students rushing to class...

It seems the shooter was a South Korean native.

So sad this shooting. Am praying for the families of the victims. I heard that one of the teachers killed was a haulocaust(SP?) survivor. He held the door shut so his students could escape out a window. Now that is really sad, surviving an evil like that haulocaust(SP?) only to die in a school shooting. This is just a sad day.

Wow. They just installed an intercom system in my dorm this morning. I assume they've done the same for the other residence halls around campus.
