I don't see why they would remove such a iconic character such as May, she's in the anime and as a rival/playable character. It would be a silly as getting rid of Dawn if they ever made a Sinnoh remake. So I firmly believe May and Brendan will return.
 
I have a feeling Brendan will be the one getting the overhaul. If there is one. I think that May is too iconic to be replaced.
 
May has to return! If she (or Brendan) got replaced I'd be super fucking pissed.
 
Kris was only replaced because she was exclusive to Crystal. May was in all three Hoenn games and she was even a rival and an anime character that travelled with Ash. If they got rid of May, they'd change a rival. So no, May shouldn't be replaced. She can be redesigned, but still as May.

So yes, I think May being replaced is perfectly possible and I don't think they replaced Kris because she was exclusive to Crystal (what kind of reasoning is this?).
 
Oh God, please no. May's one of my favorite PC's. If you have to replace anyone, make it Brendan.
 
To be honest, I'm not even sure why this question is popping up anywhere at all. Taking aside the fact that I still believe Kris and Lyra are one and the same (they still haven't given us legitimate confirmation otherwise), this "replacement" happened once out of 4 times. Yes, Leaf/Blue/whatever you call her is clearly at least based on that unused Gen I girl. Twice is a coincidence and three is a trend, but we've only had it happen once, everybody.

Even if Kris was "replaced", she was not nearly as major as Brendan and May were. In Gen II, Kris was in one game. May and Brendan have been in all three of the Hoenn games (with redesigns), May is a major character in the anime, and they both have several manga counterparts. So I honestly don't have a doubt in my mind that they won't be "replaced".

Can one of them have a major overhaul a la Red a̶n̶d̶ ̶Kr̶i̶s̶? Yes, in fact I think if anyone's gonna have it, it's gonna be Brendan (the beloved hat will be replaced with a headband :D). But as for replacing them, no I think they're going to stay in tact with cool new redesigns. And if one of them has a sketchy redesign, the ambiguity won't be there this time because we have the rival/NPC default names.

But guys the real question is, if we have customization again, will it even really matter if they are "replaced"? Just dress 'em um like Brendan or May and there you go.
 
No, I doubt it. May appeared in all three Hoenn games, been apart of the full anime arc and is a 'face' of Hoenn. Kris wasn't; she was in one game. I think Kris was replaced by Lyra personally just because they wanted a more 'universal' character that had the standard 'brown hair etc.' rather than the bright blue hair, and that Kris wasn't really a big part of the Johto saga.

They're still gonna appear as rivals/friends, so it will matter because they'll be apart of the 'nostalgia' factor people like with remakes.
 
I honestly don't see why the Kris/Lyra situation would happen to May. As people already stated before, May has been in over 100 episodes in the Anime and has an actual role in the games.

While I do understand how people feel about Kris, the truth of the matter is that she was pretty much treated as a female version of Gold/Ethan. She does not have a NPC role when not chosen as the player so it was easier to discard her. I suspect this is the same reason why we don't see Leaf after FRLG. In FRLG, she was simply a female option to Red, nothing more.

Actually, not to get off-topic, but it's probably because Red is the only canonical protagonist, whereas all other protagonists could be the male or the female. ONLY Red appears at Mt. Silver when battling Gold, not Leaf. Therefore, Red is actually canon, and Leaf is not.

Anyway, on-topic, I think it's extremely unlikely they'd replace May. So yeah... I guess that's it...
 
Another replacement wouldn't be bad but not particularly good either. When GF swapped Kris for Lyra/Kotone, some were against the idea while others reluctant then eventually accepted her. It depends on the fans' reactions to similar major changes throughout the series.

While that is true, you are forgetting that RBY was retconned by FRLG. The only reason why Leaf wasn't in HGSS is because Game Freak didn't want her to, not because they were incapable because plot and/or mechanical reasons.
 
I'll keep an open mind, but I doubt they will replace May. As it was said above, I never heard official word that Lyra was a replacement of Kris. I always saw her as a re-imagining. But going by replacement, Kris was replaced because she was only in Crystal, and a lot of motifs in her design are tied to such game (Blue hair, her commonly accepted name). HGSS may have had elements of Crystal, but they were not Crystal remakes. Hence, a new girl.

Also, as mentioned above, they probably wanted a more "universal" character, not a "freaky" blue-haired girl. Notice how all main characters in Pokémon have had boring hair colors like black and brown? It's for that "generic" feel that can fit and relate to the vast majority of people. Nowadays the only one that has a slightly unusual hair color is Serena, and her "default" hair is more of a clear brown, between hazel and blonde. Blonde being another "natural" hair color, I must say.

May already has brown hair and unlike Kris, she has appeared in every Hoenn game and wasn't specifically designed to fit only one of them. Replacing her would come out of left field more so and infuriate even more people. Still, Lyra set a certain precedent, so I'll wait and see.
 
First of all, I don't think Lyra "replaced" Kris. My theory is that, there was no female protagonist in GS, so when they remade the games, they made a female protagonist for them. In order words, she couldn't replace a character that wasn't originally there. Though they could have and should have used Kris, they didn't. (I fail to understand why people think Kris was "replaced" because she had blue hair when Dawn had blue hair in the same generation). Now, more on topic...

For Hoenn, however, they had a female protagonist in May for all three games, so I'm not expecting May to be replaced this time around; just given the usual redesign they've given Red and Gold (Ethan).

True dat, but HGSS is still canon over FRLG (IF contradictions occur). Of course, they weren't incapable of somehow making Leaf also appear on Mt. Silver, it's just that I doubt people actually cared about her, and GF knew that. Also, remember that B2W2's World Tournament only further solidifies Red's canonity. (Yes, that's a word now.)

Kris was in Crystal and not GS, whereas May appeared in all three Hoenn games and was a central protagonist in the show. They'd have more justification replacing Brendan.
