I never read the mangas so was May (Sapphire) any different in the mangas than she was in the anime and video games?

Way different. As said, she had fangs. She didn't like contests. She loved Ruby. She lived in the wild. She was practically illiterate. And she was less girly. Very tomboyish.

Personality wise, Haruka and Sapphire are completely opposites.

But I feel like their innate natures are pretty similar, if not the same

Wow! Sounds like May really is different from her anime and game counterparts. I'll have to check out the mangas sometime if I can find them in the States.

Pretty much Goku from the original Dragon Ball with a gender swap!;-)

I'm not going to lie, I'm not the most educated when it comes to Pokemon(for reasons too long and off-topic to discuss, I'd only just gotten back into Pokemon early last year after a hiatus of who knows how long) but I don't think that the manga has gotten that far in the states from what I've heard.

I think that the only real English translation(past volume 7 or so) is from Singapore, which I do think you can import off of Ebay or something similar.

Viz has just recently begun a re-printing of the manga uncut and un-flipped, and it is currently unknown whether or not they will go farther this time.
