Anyone here meditate?

I try to get into a meditate state when I need to relax, or just to fall asleep. When I do get into a waking, peaceful position, it's very difficult to describe, but it's a beautiful feeling. Utter relaxation.

I used to meditate more when I was younger. I used to take yoga classes.
I sometimes meditating in he lotus position, tried to make astral projetction, but i never reached that level, cause its needed much more practice. Is easier to project asleep. lol
Anyway I've ever done regression, and the state in which we were between life is much similar to the meditation.
Spirituality apart, is very relaxing and healthy, and the feeling is just peace and deep happiness. I agree, it's hard to describe

I will tell you a personal story about my life but I won't go too much into detail.

I was depressed briefly somewhere around two years ago. I've always been a pretty happy person, but then something happened during that time. I'd rather not talk about the exact event because it's personal, but something happened that really made me anxious and sad all the time. It would effect my sleep leaving me restless. I think I went 4 or 5 days with one to two hours of actual sleep. I was in such a bad state that I ended up seeing the cardiologist. (My heart was fine. I was just really anxious because of what happened.) This was around the time when I looked into meditation, and I practiced it a little while listening to relaxing sounds like rain fall, and soothing music. Meditation can work wonderfully if you know how to clear your mind of all of its mental chatter. The problem is that it can be really difficult to learn how to actually accomplish that, so I couldn't really enjoy the full benefits of meditation because I always struggled with clearing my mind. Meditation did help to an extent though, but I could have definitely made better use of it if I learned how to control my thoughts more efficiently. I'm not the least bit depressed anymore, but I am definitely a firm believer in the benefits of meditation and if I'm ever really stressed out again I will look into it even further. :)

I think the thing no one ever tells you is how hard it can be to wipe your mind of all thoughts for even just 20 minutes. For me, I first focus on my breathing, and when I've got the rhythm I start to feel the mind wander. A random thought will pop up, but what you have to do is acknowledge that you've strayed, and then cancel the thought and go back to focusing on your breathing.

I'm not sure if you can call it meditation, but before I go to sleep I have to get rid of all my thoughts, or else I'll be too busy thinking and can't fall asleep. Basically, what you said above, Baf, is what I do before sleeping, though it only takes me a few minutes once I can clear my head. I also don't really focus on my breathing. :p

Meditation is something I feel would be interesting and fun to get into more, however, so perhaps I'll give a try later on.

The people at MIND (mental health charity) introduced me to 'mindful breathing' which is getting common these days and is basically like 'meditation lite'.

It's the thing Baf mentioned about focusing on the rhythm of your breathing and no other thoughts. I find that it's much easier (as with a lot of things) to do with another person guiding me through the process.

Thank you :)

Meditation practically saved my life.

I have Tourettes or something along the lines of that which started happening when I was around 12. It was pretty bad and I had to constantly be on medication which seemed to do more harm then good with no progress on my condition. Then one day I decided to make my own cure and tried meditation. I would for a few minutes a day clear my head and focus on seeing how long I can suppress the tics. Eventually I was able to hold them back for longer and longer until I could do it while going about my business and then without thinking about it. Now it's only a minor nuisance and I'm pretty content with myself. If I didn't take up meditation I probably would have gotten worse and killed myself a few years ago.

Wow, that's an amazing application for, meditation. I think everyone could benefit being taught meditation at a young age, I think we'd have a lot more level-headed, happy people if they had the ability to partake in mindful meditation. Meditation is a powerful tool for the mind, it can help eliminate bad thoughts, help against developing or prolonging mental illness or just a good way to relax oneself. I don't think it's the answer to everything, but I do believe that meditation can offer a lot to people.

It worries me that people turn to things like unhealthy food and drugs (especially alcohol) to deal with their stress. :/
