Mega Evolution -- Bonds - Pokemon Horizons Episode 114 Review - Au Revoir, Kalos

Pokemon Horizons Episode 114 Review - Au Revoir, Kalos
I knew this mini-arc wouldn’t let me down! Everything got resolved coherently, and we can see how much Ult and Roy have changed since the Mega Voltage arc! Most of all, it’s definitely a set up for a possible return to Kalos for the anime’s final arc.

First off, what is with the condiment-themed names? First we had Master Mayonnaise and now there’s Count Oyster, named after oyster sauce, and the ninja Shoyu, named after the Japanese word for soy sauce. The three being Mega Evolution gurus in a way made sense in the end due to the themed names, but I still find it a little odd that they know a lot about Mega Evolution despite not using Pokemon who can go beyond evolution. Still, I’m glad that my theory of Mayonnaise being suspicious got debunked and he is a good person alongside his pals. Also, do you think Mayonnaise owns that boutique Roy went to?

I do feel like the training was more for Ult’s benefit rather than Roy’s as the former struggled with bonding deeper with his Sableye while Roy and Crocalor already share a deep trust given their trials and tribulations of their adventures. Still, it was great to see Roy and Crocalor singing once again! On top of that, the animation for the Double Battle was great! It felt more fluid compared to the battle animations from the past weeks. Remember how Ult boasted about achieving Mega Evolution before Roy did during his debut episode? He wasn’t lying! Ult did Mega Evolve his Pokemon first! I do like how understandable his loss against Lucario was as Sableye still hasn’t adjusted to his new form! I feel like this is rare when it comes to Mega Evolution lore because the gimmick makes it as if Pokemon are already super accustomed to their new form. The anime always shows them having no real issues with it. I think the only other instance of Mega Evolution issues was with Korrina’s Lucario when it went berserk upon usage. I wish the same was the case for this Lucario, but it would make sense that it would have control due to possessing a Mega Stone and its aura controlling abilities could have factored in to good control. Roy Mega Evolving his opponent was a crazy feat. If such a feat is canonically possible now, maybe Roy and Ult can Mega Evolve other Pokemon without the need to bond with them? Though, I do feel like it’s not going to be brought up again…

Master Mayonnaise in battle
What is with Horizons and making the canine Pokemon so adorable? First there was Murdock’s chonky Lycanroc who easily stole viewers’ hearts, and now there’s puppy-eyed Lucario who has also stolen their hearts. Roy’s Lucario has been criticized for a lack of personality, but I disagree. It had shown it’s sillier side in past episodes like Episode 92 where it was shocked when Sableye was about to eat Terapagos and Episode 96 where it comically reacted to Crocalor being too full to battle. In my opinion, I feel like it showed more of its personality rather than being given one.

I do like that the last portions of the episode answered a lot like where Roy’s hat went and how he got his new clothes as he eventually grew out of his clothes and grew out his hair during the time skip. Ult’s shyness towards girls was a given due to his inability to be upfront with Emma in order to express his gratefulness towards her hospitality. It really gives off the vibes that they will return to Kalos. Since this is the finale of the mini-arc, let me know your thoughts on the episode!

Don't know about a return to Kalos, but I could see Emma (possibly Looker as well) disproving Exceed's claims. Her being closer in age to the leads than the age she is in Z-A is likely a final nail in the coffin of HZ being canon to the games, regrettably.
