The recently-announced WiiWare game, "Melee! Pokemon Scramble!" has been released on the Japanese WiiWare service.

And before anyone asks - no, there's no word on any English language release of the game yet.

So anyway, I downloaded the game today and played around for about an hour. You start the game off with a Koratta toy and immediately get thrown into the middle of a Battle Royal. You're too weak to win, so after you inevitably lose, you're sent to a terminal where you're told to gather more friends.

You have access to six different areas at first, with each area having a specific theme (a forest, a rocky cave, a beach, etc.). You can enter the levels in any order you want.

The levels in each game are a straightforward affair. There are no twists or turns to make - you just go straight the whole way. Fighting happens in real time, so the action isn't broken up by any turn-based battles or anything like that. You're also able to switch pokemon at any time, and there doesn't seem to be the six pokemon limit that exists in the handheld games.

Sometimes, the pokemon you fight will join you. But from what I've been able to determine, whether or not a pokemon joins your team is completely random.

Battles basically consist of you tapping the attack button over and over and over. There is an element of strategy in that you get to assign certain attacks to certain buttons, with new attacks made available by purchasing them in the terminal. And there's the whole type match-up thing. But for the most part, battles are a button-mashing affair. You'll encounter a ton of pokemon - the results screen at the end of the first level told me that I had defeated 84 of the critters - so you're never left without anything to do.

At the end of each level, you face off against a boss pokemon which is, for some reason, a giant. So far, the bosses I've encountered have been Fushigisou, Kameil, and Arbok.

By the way...I've only encountered Kanto pokemon so far. Hmm.

So far, the game has been a lot of fun. There are enough new things to keep me interested at the moment, but I could see how this game could get very tedious as time goes on. In any case, the game is a nice breath of fresh air after the last few releases and I think that every fan should at least give it a shot whenever it becomes available.

That sounds really fun, like a good time-waster. Good to see the spin-offs get away from Stadium, Box, Mystery Dungeon, and Ranger games ever once in a while.

Got to wonder why your 'starter' is a Rattata instead of something more popular, like, oh, perhaps, Pikachu. Or a Kanto starter.

I never saw the answer to this question and the answer may be too obvious but I have to know. Are all the Pokemon in the game? With maybe some few exceptions but is 99% of the Pokemon in the game?

English please? this is a mostly english forum... why do people insist on using foreign names here? Go to a japanese site or whatever if your so committed to these original names

Is using Google instead of whining really that difficult?

looking up over 400 or so names because people who clearly already know the english names but refuse to use them? Yea it's much more difficult for me... then there is the problem of me not exactly knowing what translation it is... japanese? Romaji (or something..)? Finding translations of Japanese names back and forth without getting the symbols but spelled with the alphabet...

Numbers alone: One person using appropriate language is much easier than many people having to look it up (not just me)

Heheh, couldn't help but chuckle at your tirade, friend.

Actually, you could have spent a lot less energy just going to our resident info database and typing the names Dogasu mentioned.

Of course, do whatever floats (or sinks) your boat, but nobody likes a forum whiner...

Ehem... Anyway, this game seems pretty interesting. I've been reading up on the news about it in Bulbapedia, but I've yet to see some good screens, so I suppose off I should go to find some...

A button masher...this sounds like a good time waster. I will get this as soon as it gets to America. I saw some videos, and it looks awsome.

So I played through a few more levels and completed my first Battle Royal. Now, I've moved up to the B Rank levels (you start the game off with C Rank levels). Their layouts are the exact same as the C Rank levels, but the pokemon that are available are different.

You need to befriend 100 pokemon to participate in the C Rank Battle Royal, and you need to befriend 200 before you can challenge the B Rank Battle Royal.

Still only Kanto pokemon so far. Bosses I've fought since last time have been Persian, Lizard, the three Eevee evolutions, and Raichu.

Two things I forgot to mention:

01) When you go to download the game from the Wii Shopping Channel, there's a notice screen that says that this software is not compatible with any other Pokemon software. Nice to see they're being upfront about that.

02) This game lets you have three save slots. Also, saving is done automatically every time you finish a level or teach your pokemon a new move.

sounds awesome! But I don't think there will be only kanto pokémon since I have seen dialga palkia empoleon turtwig budew burmy etc. in screenshots so... But I'm definitly gonna dowload it when it comes out in EU, although I'm still waiting for my my pokemon ranch update >:|

damn, I just found out that there are only kanto and sinnoh pokemon in this game. That's a pity. I was reallt looking forward playing with Sceptile :(

I just started playing this not too long ago. I am enjoying it. The music is really catchy. I'm not too far, I just beat Arbok.

I was playing after my original post, and I got this Pidgey...but it's name is purple...what is it?

I know what you mean about the music...the boss battle music has been stuck in my head for the last few days.

As for the pokemon whose names are in purple...those are pokemon who have special abilities. Your Poppo, for example, has "Knock Out," which means that it's more likely to score critical hits.

This blog (Japanese only) has a list of the various abilities in the game.

Edit: The "final boss" music in the S Rank is pretty freaking badass. I would buy a soundtrack release of this game just for that one track.
