Where did I herd u liek Mudkipz originate?

And in plain English, what makes a meme a meme?
 
it was a copypasta in 4chan i think

about some Ash cosplayler that shagged a mudkip plushie at school

A meme (rhyming with "cream") is a postulated unit or element of cultural ideas, symbols or practices, and is transmitted from one mind to another through speech, gestures, rituals, or other imitable phenomena. The etymology of the term relates to the Greek word mimema for "something imitated".

The word was first introduced by British scientist Richard (Motherfuckingly Awesome) Dawkins in The Selfish Gene (1976) to discuss evolutionary principles in explaining the spread of ideas and cultural phenomena. He gave as examples melodies, catch-phrases, and beliefs (notably religious beliefs), clothing/fashion.

essentially it is somthing that is told from person to person and becomes popluar

Biggest common mistake of the Mudkipz meme.

It originated on DeviantArt, on a Mudkip Fanclubs page someone posted "So, I herd u liek Mudkipz?" and basically everyone started saying it too each other, and it spread and spread and spread.

haha, we on this forum should try to create a meme ourself ^^ But a meme probably won't work if you want it to become a meme :/
 
"meme" was coined from the Greek root mimema, related to "mimic;" basically meme is "a unit of information" that people like to repeat.

Takoto has the correct origin story. People who saw the original thought it was funny, and started to repeat it; then others who saw those did the same thing, and so on, and so on, and so on....

A biologist named Richard Dawkins invented the word "meme" in his book The Selfish Gene; he was theorizing that chunks of information act the same way genes do - growing and spreading (copying themselves from mind to mind), even "evolving" through "natural selection" (The way "Play it again, Sam," evolved from "Play it, Sam! Play 'As Time Goes By,'" because it's shorter - easier to mimic - and more understandable outside the context of Casablanca).

The story of the "boy who shagged a Mudkip plushie" is a meme of its own now; although for longer memes like that, there's already another term - "urban legend." An urban legend is a particular type of meme that is told as a "true story" that happened somewhere to "a friend of a friend." A joke would be another kind of meme; untrue sayings like "lightning never strikes twice" would be a third kind of meme.

The Seaking meme was basically a meme were Seaking is very powerful and people enjoy shouting his name xD pretty much

I have no idea, although I must say it most likely started on /b/ (the most popular 4chan board).


Also, guys, I hope you realize Meme's start on /b/ not 4chan. 4chan is the whole website, /b/ is the random board where most meme's start.


I don't recommend going on there, it's addictive and horrible.

It all began with the following copypasta:

FUCK YEAH SEAKING! I heard he's the only guy who can beat goatse using his horn! FUCK YEAH! I also heard he can beat Mudkips and Slowpoke all at once! Isn't that amazing?
