She left doll clothes on the dresser. She had made them out of scraps of fabric, with a little felt for the red R.
I suppose it wasn't very good, but back then it was the best thing she ever could have done.
She didn't think I was awake when she came in my room that night. I was planning to say goodbye to her then, but I was still angry at her for taking off for the Andes and leaving me behind. So I kept quiet as she kissed my forehead, running her fingers through my hair.
"Jessica," she said. I could tell she was crying. I should have said something, but I couldn't. "Jessica, I'll be back in a few months at the latest. You know I can't upset the Boss. But she's promised me that I'll get quite a reward for finding Mew..."
She fell silent after that, stroking my hair gently. After a few minutes, she sighed, standing. "I'm going to miss you, Jessica...I'm leaving a present for you on your dresser...I love you."
That's when I should have sat up and said something--anything would have done. Anything at all.
But I just lay there, pretending to be asleep.
The door closed, and I never saw her again.
Until I got the news, I had dressed my doll in the uniform. But when my guardian sat me down and told me that Mama was missing, and probably wasn't going to come back, I promptly removed the uniform.
I tried to burn it, but couldn't bring myself to light the match. I think it was because I still had hope.
One of these, I'm going to give it to my daughter. I'm going to tell her all about her grandmother, and what a wonderful woman she was.
But my own doll will stay bare.
