Ongoing ME's Wheel Madness Challenge

Well...I almost forgot this section existed.

This is going to be where I post rules, updates, clips, and other information regarding my new "wheel madness" challenge.

The first series for which I am using these rules is Ultra Sun. We'll see where this goes from here.

I stream Sunday mornings at 8:30am US Central time, so if you're interested, please stop by. It's been...interesting so far.

Feel free to participate in the conversation here and ask any questions you may have.

The Rules
ME’s Wheel Madness Challenge Rules:

The wheels:

Whenever ME gets to a new area, he must spin wheels to determine what Pokemon, if any, he must encounter for that area. This applies to starter Pokemon, as well. ME is only allowed to catch and use Pokemon as determined by these wheel spins.

There are up to three wheels that ME can spin.

The species wheel determines which species ME must catch for his team, as dictated by the encounters in each area.
  • Each species is to be given the same odds on the wheel, despite differing encounter rates.
  • For non-starter wheels, there must be a “no encounter” slot on the wheel that has the same odds as any other potential spin.
  • The starter wheel will only have the three starters on it. There is no “no encounter” slot on that wheel.
  • There is a dupes clause in effect, both for individual species as well as evolutionary lines. That is to say if ME catches, for example, a Starly on one route, Starly, Staravia, and Staraptor will be removed from all future wheel spins.
  • The wheel is to include all species available in the area, including: wild encounters, NPC trades, and gift Pokemon.

The gender wheel determines what gender the species determined by the species wheel must be.
  • If the species is genderless, 100% male, or 100% female, this wheel will not be spun, as it is redundant.
  • If the game does not have Pokemon gender (i.e. the Gen one games), this wheel will not be spun.
  • Regardless of the actual odds, if a species is capable of being male or female, the wheel’s odds will be 50-50.

The shiny wheel determines whether or not the caught Pokemon must be shiny.
  • This wheel is added at ME’s discretion.
  • The wheel odds are also determined at ME’s discretion, with factors such as base shiny odds, alternative shiny hunting methods, and so forth helping to determine them.
  • If the game does not have shiny Pokemon visibly available (i.e. the Gen one games), this wheel will not be added to the challenge.

An “area” is defined as a route, town, or dungeon, and, in newer games, would be defined by unique banners that pop up when you enter that area. So, for example, despite technically being considered as Alolan Route 1, “Route 1,” “Route 1 - Hau’oli Outskirts,” and “Route 1 - Trainer’s School” are considered different areas, since their banners are different, and there is a banner transition when going from one to the other.

Starters are always considered to be gifted in their own unique area, and do not count toward that particular town’s or route’s encounter.

Wheel re-spins:

Both ME and Twitch chat can choose to re-spin one of the wheels per encounter.

Twitch chat’s re-spin will be determined by a 3 minute poll, as set up by ME or one of the Twitch moderators. Each viewer is allowed one vote. (No channel point redemptions for extra votes.) Poll options are “species wheel,” “gender wheel,” “shiny wheel,” and “no re-spin” as necessary.

ME is not allowed to vote in this poll, but, if the end results are tied, he can decide which wheel to re-spin on behalf of chat.

Under most circumstances, ME can choose to re-re-spin the same wheel that chat re-spun. The two exceptions are if the species wheel lands on no encounter or if the shiny wheel lands on shiny.

The encounters/team building:

Once the wheel spins are determined and finalized, ME must encounter the Pokemon as determined by the wheel spins.

If it is impossible or determined to be excessively difficult to obtain the particular encounter, ME may leave the area and return at a later point. (i.e. if Surf or Fishing is required for the encounter, but ME does not have that yet).

In such a case, ME must return and encounter that Pokemon at the earliest point of convenience that he can.

Since ME is only allowed to obtain Pokemon as dictated by the wheels, he is not allowed to catch any other Pokemon (except when Mercy Rules are invoked, see below for Mercy Rule details).
  • This means that, even if he should encounter a shiny, if it is not dictated as the area encounter, he must knock it out. (No running away.)
  • This further means that, in games with HMs, ME cannot catch a non-wheel spun Pokemon purely for HM using purposes. He must use the HM on one of his available Pokemon.
  • Breeding Pokemon cannot be used as a substitute for catching Pokemon. ME is not allowed to hatch Pokemon from Eggs, unless the egg is a potential Gift Pokemon.

While ME is only allowed to catch Pokemon as dictated by the wheels, he can choose what team members he wants to use from that pool.

Nicknames are optional, but encouraged. Under most circumstances, chat provided nicknames will be prioritized.

THIS IS NOT A NUZLOCKE. Pokemon that faint are not considered “dead,” and there are no level caps or healing limitations.

Mercy Rules:

Mercy rules can only be invoked specifically when a shiny encounter is required, and only after ME has encountered and knocked out three non-useable shinies in the pursuit of a specific encounter.

Under mercy rules, in lieu of catching a shiny of a specific species and gender, ME may catch either of the following, as long as it is in the correct area:
  • Any shiny of the correct species, even if it is the incorrect gender.
  • A shiny from the same evolutionary line as the spun species, but it must be the correct gender.

Should ME catch a Pokemon under the mercy rules, that counts as fulfilling the required encounter for that area, but he cannot use that Pokemon on his team in any capacity.

These rules may be updated at anytime, since this is an experimental series.
