I only noticed this because in my FR game, I taught my poliwrath metronome. But how would a pokemon such as poliwrath use metronome if it turned into crunch or Iron Tail? I could see how some moves could be used.

Also I have wondered how a pokemon knew what to do after it used metronome and it turned into a move as the move is always random.

Specifically concerning Crunch, I think that Poliwrath has a mouth: The line beneath its nostrils and above its swirl. Of course it never opens its mouth, I'm only guessing. I think the swirly part is its throat, since it's based on a frog.

Concerning other Pokemon and Metronome, though, I have no idea...

I always thought that they would simply hit the opposing Pokemon with the strength and base stats of an Iron Tail or the like. But I dunno. =/

Maybe the pokemon grow a temporary tail with the power of the move that fades after it's finished? Or a whip-like object is produced out of their glowing hands to simulate the tail. That could explain iron/aqua tail.

As for crunch, their fingers momentarily grow sharp as fangs and clamp them between the foe. Metronome does involve waving hands, so this is about all I can figure.

I thought metronome was a waving finger? Anyway I was thinking and...

Most special moves could be used b/c they could work like most, so any pokemon could basically use any special move but if the pokemon is the same type as the move (e.g. a Dark move being used by a dark pokemon) it could know how to make the move stronger as it has the power another pokemon not that type could not.

Going off your logic, How would Alakazam use iron tail? If Kadabra learns it, he has it, but no tail......

Suppose that only applies to games as in Anime, I think a trainer would not get an alakazam to use the move or if asked it would look at where its tail was and not do anything or similar for any pokemon having similar things removed when evolving.

That reminds me, what Metronome attack did Togepi use to blow up Butch and Cassidy's building? I've never been able to figure it out

Whenever I try to find a logical answer to this solution, I always seem to find a flaw. I think Metronome is just a move that's just for fun, not really having any logic to it.

Though one thing I've noticed it that certain Pokemon, when using that move, favor some moves more than others. My Togepi, when I had it on my Pearl, loved to use flying moves when I used Metronome, especially Aeroblast and Fly (Aeroblast was used 6 times, Fly was used 4). I don't know if it was coincidence, or the fact that Togepi couldn't wait to sprout wings. Just something interesting I've noticed.

I never noticed until you said... my poliwrath uses life stealing moves more when metronome is used, BUT it does use fang moves a bit more... used poison fang 3 times in a row once in FireRed. Seems my poliwrath likes growing fangs. But I have noticed when it battles water pokemon or flying types, metronome turns into electric moves more so, but they usually miss.

Maybe it depends on the situation or pokemon its facing, as Mistys Togepi used metronome and it turned into teleport at the right moment, when a rhydon in "In The Pink" was charging the group. Then when it used metronome, it turned into relect at the right moment, to reflect the hyper beam that a nidoking used.

So, I assumen, although random, the move metronome will become, will be a good move for that situation

Well, I think Explosion would be like a special type move, and I could see how special moves would be used with metronome. Togepi looks like it could be capable of whatever Koffing or Voltorb could do.

You're right though. What I fail to understand is how the blast was powerful enough to destroy the building, yet Ash & co., Team Rocket, and Officer Jenny all managed to somehow survive.

Especially Butch and Cassidy, who were standing on top of the building when Togepi blew it up.

when a pokémon uses metronome, maybe it creates a mirage using crunch or iron tail. that could be possible.

Heres my (farfetch'd) idea:
Maybe Metronome isn't really an attack, but summons another pokémon to use an attack for the user... so, if Togepi gets Iron Tail, a Steelix, Rhyhorn or Pikachu could come down and use Iron Tail for it. That could be why it's a metronome, like a conductor.

That just seems even more unsensible than a Togepi using an Iron Tail. I just assumed they grow something just like how Ash's Sceptile's leaves kind of transform into blades.

I just always thought it made a mouth or tail out of energy.

Yeah, that's what I thought aswell. What, that not good enough for you?!!!

What, so Poliwrath can't just create energy fangs out of his belly?

... Ew. That would just look weird. :|

Basically noticing this, metrenome would work like how mimic/copy cat or mirror move creates an attack... but the only mimic I have seen in anime was Brocks sudowoodo using it to use Razor Leaf, so I'd still assume the energy logic is clostest thing we have for attacks like Iron Tail on a pokemon that has no tail.

Maybe for a short amount of time a body part needed to use that move appears then disappears after the move is used.

I think a pokemon would just grow a tail if it does an Iron Tail attack but once in a battle when a Munchlax used Metronome it used Roar Of Time
