Hey all! Been wanting to make a secondary blog for this for a while.

You see, a long time ago now (I want to say two years ago?), I decided to begin on a path I'd been considering, but was too afraid to walk down: making a Shiny Living Dex. For those unaware, a Living Dex is a Pokémon collection (often kept in Pokémon HOME for ease of access) of every single creature in the franchise (so not just Venusaur, but Bulbasaur and Ivysaur as well). And, well, a Shiny Living Dex is that... but with Shiny Pokémon.

You can imagine how big of an undertaking that is. In fact, I caught my very first shiny in 2013 (a Karrablast), back during my initial playthrough of Pokémon X, and I've been shiny hunting occasionally ever since. My collection currently sits at... 295 Pokémon out of 1,049 (If you're confused about that number, just hold on; I'll explain it later on.). So, needless to say... I've still got a long way to go, lmao.
Up until now, I've mostly hunted in Gens 7 and 9, as well as Pokémon GO; I dabbled in hunting in Legends Arceus and Gen 6; I only slightly hunted in BDSP and Gen 4; and I pretty much didn't hunt at all in SwSh and Gens 2, 3 and 5.

Now, you may be wondering a few things, be it the random "1,049" number I threw out or the mention of Pokémon GO for a living dex. So I'm going to go over the rules I set for myself for this dex and what I will and will not hunt:

-All Pokémon must require some sort of effort for me to obtain as shinies. This means no trading, but also no events that are mere Mystery Gifts or free handouts like the Gible and Dratini from Black 2 and White 2 or the Munchlax from Ogre Oustin'. The HOME reward Meloetta and Keldeo require a regular living dex to be deposited into HOME, so they count. Pokémon GO shinies might have at times outrageous rates, but they come with their own challenges, such as, you know, physically walking around, or a set limit of encounters, unless you want to sell your house for microtransactions, which I cannot do anyway on account of living on welfare. I will say this rule is incredibly subjective, and I might infringe it myself due to that: for example, I'm not restricting myself from counting Community Day shinies or outbreak+sandwich shinies in SV, merely due to personal preference. After all, I still have a thousand of these to get, so I think it's not too big a deal if I got my Quaxly from GO or from hatching eggs.
If a Pokémon has two methods of acquisition that are both considered "less pure" by my set of rules (like, for example, Meltan, which can be obtained as a shiny from Pokémon GO events and as a HOME completion reward), I will prioritize whichever method gives me a shiny with my OT on it (so, in this case, the Pokémon GO Meltan), and, failing that, which one seems the coolest or most fun to me.

-"Distinct enough" permanent forms will be counted as separate Pokémon. This means that regional forms are on the menu, and so are forms like Blood Moon Ursaluna (when or if it becomes available as a shiny) or Paldean Tauros's Breeds, which are unchangeable and have a significant impact on gameplay. Meanwhile, more minor forms (like gender differences or Meowstic), forms which can be changed back and forth (like the Creation Trio, Mega Evolutions, or the Genies), and fusions (like Necrozma and Kyurem) will only count once for their base form. This is also how I landed on the number 1,049: after removing ineligible events and shiny locks, and adding eligible forms, that is the distinct number of Pokémon I will need (unless I miscounted somewhere).

-No RNG Manipulating, glitches, or hacks. The latter is pretty obvious, but as for the other two: I have previously RNG manipulated shinies for a Regulation H VGC team last year, and while that took effort and dedication to obtain in its own way, I ultimately considered this method to be its own thing separate from shiny hunting. As a result, Pokémon like Gastrodon or Torkoal which I have RNG manipulated as shinies are not included in this dex. I am also banning glitches that allow the direct acquisition of shinies. So, something like ACE in Gens 3 or 4 is banned, but going out of bounds to shiny hunt Shaymin in BDSP's older revisions is not, since one can just give you a shiny outright while the other just gives you the opportunity to shiny hunt an otherwise unobtainable Pokémon.

-An addendum on mobile games, spin-offs, and other miscellaneous details:
It's worth noting some Shiny Pokémon are only obtainable from spin-offs and mobile games. For example, Shiny Genesect has only ever been available in Pokémon GO, with the exception of one obscure Japanese event in Gen 5, and Jirachi can only be shiny hunted from the Pokémon Colosseum Bonus Disc in the US, and Pokémon Channel in Europe.
While we're on the subject: I am European, specifically French. As a result, some things may be available to me, while others may not (like the Jirachi distinction explained above). I'm not strictly preventing myself from hunting on foreign copies of games (I already have done so a handful of times), and I might resort to that for some cases like Faraway Island Mew, but if I get a shiny from some Pokémon GO France-exclusive event, I'll still count it if it fits the rest of the rules explained above.
And, finally... all the hunts conducted here will be on official hardware. A given console may be modded, but if it is, then no cheats or mods will be used (that would break the third rule anyway). It's possible I will use emulators for Gens 4 and 5 for the purposes of streaming to friends down the line, but if I do, then it will be done with no speedup or other advantages, and on exported saves from authentic cartridges.
I doubt anyone sees it as such, but just in case: the Nintendo Switch 2's Switch 1 "emulation" does not fit under this rule, and neither do the 3DS Virtual Console releases of Gens 1 and 2.

...Okay, I think that's finally everything, lol. Now, about the fun stuff!

update! I'm in hell! /silly

I've been locking in on my shaymin hunt lately but it's just not shining. adding up the darkrai and shaymin encounters I am now at 5950 encounters with no shiny. and like I'm not new to over odds hunts but I wanna see some sparkles now lmao. we keep trucking along

I also remembered go -> home transfer exists again so I sent along some shinies from there. unfortunately I'm stupid so I sent a lot of duplicates this time and only have two more mons to add to the pile: torkoal and beheeyem. I wanted the torkoal in particular to come from go because it's usually a regional exclusive to south asia, but I managed to get it during a recent event. It's a cool flex so it felt nice to put in the living dex (plus I love torkoal he deserves special treatment)

OH I also forgot but I had some shinies to evolve in sv and then put back in home so we can add four more to the pile, putting the grand total at 301 shinies! I'm happy to hit a new milestone after so long. here's hoping it won't take too long to get to 400!

Yesterday, my Shaymin hunt has surpassed the Darkrai one in terms of encounters, sitting at a fairly-large 3205 encounters. I'm starting to get antsy, lmao; it's been a while since I saw some sparkles. Even Pokémon GO has been putting me through a bit of drought (the recent Flabébé Community Day aside, but playing a CD and finding shinies is like going outside in the middle of the day and finding sunlight).

If this Shaymin hunt ends up unfinished by the time September ends (which is still unlikely), I'll put it on hold again and resume my hunt for Darkrai. It feels fitting to hunt the Pokémon known for nightmares during spooky month, after all... for now, I'll probably put in some more encounters today as always. I'll get my teal hedgehog sooner or later!

guys!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! it happened!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It took 3321 encounters, but Shiny Shaymin has finally arrived!!! I'm so happy about this. Look at my beautiful creature isn't it great

I'll be putting it on my team for the rest of my Shining Pearl playthrough (I used a glitch to get to the Flower Paradise right after the fifth badge), so it'll be a while before I can add it to HOME and increment the shiny dex total by one. But until then, I'll be enjoying using this guy!

I'll probably take a small break before starting again on Darkrai, but I don't expect it to be very long. I love shiny hunting, and this Darkrai has been loooooooooooooong overdue. Been hunting it since its event dropped!

!!! Congratulations are in order !!!
Over 3.3K encounters, that's so much! I wouldn't have the patience to do this, so huge props to you for not giving up and getting so far!!
Thank you so much! Honestly 3.3K is par for the course for shiny hunting, hell, it's a little under par (given the 1/4096 odds), so it wasn't too hard to wait that long, hehe
I've been shiny hunting for a while so I'm kind of used to this!

Just beat Shining Pearl! And oh boy, was it an undertaking, lmfao. I'm gonna talk about my run here since it's tangentially related to my Shaymin hunt but I'll put it all under a spoiler if you're only here for the shinies.

First up is explaining the setup of the hunt. Buckle in, this part gets crazy.

Okay, so first of all, I feel like I should explain for those unfamiliar why I was even intentionally playing an older revision of this game (and how I did that, too).

So. To put it in short, there is exactly two ways to hunt Shaymin nowadays if you weren't there for either of its events during Platinum or BDSP's life cycles. You can either use the Void glitch in Diamond and Pearl, or you can use the Menu Storage glitch in BDSP (which is the method I went for). While the Void method is very accessible, it's got one major downside: the shiny odds in Gen 4 are half of what they are in Gen 8, at 1/8192. That's not to say BDSP's method is objectively better, though, for one very simple reason: Menu Storage is only doable on versions 1.0.0 to 1.1.2. The most current revision of the game is 1.1.3, so... what? Are we just shit out of luck?

Nope!

If you were to intentionally play on the version present on your cartridge by disabling auto-updates on your Switch, you can get access to these older versions! So, simple, right? Just delete the update data and start a new file?
Haha, god, I wish.
For some reason that escapes me to this day, Nintendo has never let you downpatch your games. So, say, if you were to have played and updated Brilliant Diamond to its latest version (like I have), even if you were to delete all the data relating to the game on your system, the Switch/Switch 2 would remember what patch you were on and refuse to let you in until you update again.
And this is how I ended up buying a second-hand copy of Shining Pearl (which my Switch 2 had never seen before) to hunt Shaymin. But there's yet another thing to be mindful of before you hop onto eBay.
You see, on top of Shaymin being unable to be reached in 1.1.3, it is also simply not present on 1.0.0. So you also have to pay attention to what cartridge you buy.
On the back of every Switch cartridge is a serial number. In the case of BDSP, the final number indicates which version comes pre-installed on the cart: 000 is 1.0.0, 001 is 1.1.1, 002 is 1.1.2, and 003 is 1.1.3. So not only do you have to be careful not to have used 1.1.3 before, not only do you have to probably buy an entire extra video game, but you also have to look at the cartridge's serial number to hunt this thing.

So... why the hell did I choose to do this over booting up my perfectly good copy of Pokémon Diamond? Well, exactly because of what I told you!
I'm trying to keep my shiny hunts varied and memorable, and you'd be hard-pressed to find a shiny hunt quite as unique as this one. I've never had to "shiny hunt" the video game itself before, lmfao

Once you've squared everything away, you can finally start playing the game. First, you have to get the first five badges, and get Surf from Cynthia's grandma. Once you have it, fly to Pastoria and walk over to Dr. Footstep's house just east of the city. Stand in front of it, then try to hit Fly on your Pokétch on the same frame as you exit the HM menu. If you've done it right, you'll be able to walk with the Fly menu open. Enter Dr. Footstep's house, but close the Fly menu the instant you hear the door opening. Then, if you go surf on the water below, you'll warp inside his house while on Bibarel's back! I won't try to explain the rest with text; I'll simply link the video tutorial I followed. (Note that there might be easier setups for 1.1.1. I got a 1.1.2 cart, so I followed this method. It's not too hard so long as you follow the guide!)

What matters is, if you can successfully perform this glitch, you'll be able to reach the Flower Paradise in 2025 (and beyond, as this is future proof)! From there, it's a straightforward shiny hunt: encounter Shaymin, run away, walk down until you walk over the boundary between the Flower Paradise and the Seabreak Path, and then walk back up to re-encounter it. Easy, right? /s

That... took me 30 minutes to write. God. Anyway, getting into the playthrough itself:

From minute one, I had one singular goal in mind: prepare for Cynthia. BDSP's Champion is easily the hardest fight in any main story in the franchise, and while I didn't need to go all the way to her to finish my hunt, I still wanted to see the playthrough to its end. So, I crafted my team:

Infernape: That one was more a process of elimination than anything, lol. I pretty much always pick Turtwig in Sinnoh; and when I don't, I tend to gravitate towards Piplup. I wanted to switch it up this time, so monkey it is! Plus, he's probably the strongest of the three, so it still fit my goal of power.

Crobat: What can I say? I'm a simple girl. I'll always pick my favorite Pokémon in any game it's in. Helps that it's really fast, and decently strong.

Mismagius: I took the opportunity of playing Pearl to pick up this version exclusive. It also hit like a truck with the Choice Specs from Celestic, and has insane coverage.

Togekiss: Got this guy from the Underground as soon as I could, and it ended up coming with Serene Grace as a bonus! Just a really strong and reliable member, who I could count on to deal huge damage thanks to its amazing typing. Fun fact, it one shot Cynthia's Spiritomb turn one!

Azumarill: My pick for the single strongest non-Legendary Pokémon in BDSP. It gets both Aqua Tail and Play Rough by level 25. Actually insane. It just one-shot everything I threw at it, thanks to Huge Power and its Brave nature.

And finally... Shaymin: That one was more of a flavor pick! I mean, it's the whole reason I'm playing the game in the first place, and you usually can't get it before the post-game, so this was my one chance to use it in the main story. It predictably was very powerful: its learnset is awful, but with the TMs for Grass Knot, Giga Drain, Psychic and Dazzling Gleam, it could deal with anything not named Bronzor with ease. It was a blast to use such a strong Pokémon! Felt like a reward for the hunt.

The run was pretty straightforward, until the League: in my infinite wisdom, I entered the building with four Revives to my name, so I had to almost play like a Nuzlocke to make sure I still had everyone for Cynthia. Lucian in particular I had to beat deathless, and if it wasn't for his Alakazam throwing the match by going for Future Sight into Nasty Plot, I don't know if I could've done it, lmfao.

Anyway, I think I've yapped enough. Here are some extracts from the Cynthia battle and the Hall of Fame. Thank you so much for reading!

I got this thing after only 48 encounters after getting Shaymin. Fourty-eight. That has got to be the shortest interval between two full-odds shinies I have ever had. Now, sure, the total amount of encounters for it is still 3178, but... god damn.

Here's the capture:

I'm over the moon about finding this shiny. First of all, it's beautiful. I didn't expect its colors to be so vibrant! Secondly, I didn't make use of any glitches or exploits to access the area Darkrai can be found in like I did for Shaymin; the event has been sitting, unclaimed, in my Brilliant Diamond file since April of 2022, when it was distributed. This means this shiny has been waiting for nearly three and a half years for me to obtain it. For this reason, I named this Darkrai Restraint, because that's what it took to wait so long, lmfao. Finally fulfilling this goal of mine is so cathartic, especially because it's not merely about getting this shiny for me.

Another thing I've been working on since BDSP's release is my National Pokédex in Brilliant Diamond. Being the huge Sinnoh fan that I am, when I heard that the Grand Underground contained the vast majority of all of the first four generations' Pokémon, I decided I would complete this Pokédex with no outside help whatsoever, aside from Shining Pearl to get its version exclusives and nothing else. For the longest time, the only Pokémon I was missing to complete this project was Darkrai. But now that I could get it at last, it's complete!

The only two Pokémon missing are Celebi and Deoxys, the only two species that are wholly unobtainable in this game. Every other Pokémon was caught in Brilliant Diamond, with the exception of Shining Pearl's version exclusives. I'm way too proud of this.

Anyway, this puts the Living Dex counter at 303! I don't know what I'm going to be hunting next. Maybe it's finally time to resume my Crystal Celebi hunt...

Been working on something all afternoon today!

I was inspired by @lumineonite 's journals (you can see them on her BulbaBlog here) and how pretty they looked, so I decided to make my own! It's written as if I wrote it from within the Pokémon universe, but most of the details are based in reality. For example, the tidbit about me "starting out in Johto" is referring to the fact I had a hand-me-down copy of Pokémon Silver as a kid with a dead battery, so I never got far.

You can check out the first few pages of my journal here! I'll refrain from posting pictures, as there are a few GIFs in it, so I'll just share a Google Docs link!

Please tell me what you think of it! I'm pretty proud of it myself, hehe.

It looks amazing!!! I love all the little details - the tape is such a cute touch! :bulbaLove: I loved reading about your first few shiny encounters. The trainer card is such a good idea, I'm going to make one for my journal too!

Update: I'm still working on this! Haven't done much shiny hunting the past week (blame Sonic Racing Crossworlds coming out and being way better than expected lol) but the journal at least got a new page!

I'm loving how it's coming together... I'm considering making a physical journal for my first ZA playthrough when the time comes

So obsessed, Shaymin is adorable! I love the rotom dex :bulbaLove:

best of luck with this; looks like a huge undertaking. Out of curiosity, do the various forms of Unown count as separate pokemon in your opinion? Will you be getting shinies of them all?

Thanks for the well wishes! Honestly, I'd consider Unown to not be different enough to get all its forms, but given it has a whole dex to itself in Johto and Hisui, I feel like it'd be a shame not to get all of them, lol. So I'll probably get them all eventually.

Big update numerically, small update in terms of words!

The count has gone from 303 to 316 with the addition of the following Shiny Pokémon:

-Sprigatito, Floragato, Flabébé, Floette, Florges, Gholdengo (from Pokémon GO)
-Spinarak, Timburr, Gurrdurr, Toedscool, Duraludon, Archaludon, Tatsugiri (from Pokémon Violet)

The Violet additions are all additional Pokémon from a small shiny hunting challenge I'm currently working on; I'll let you know what it is before Z-A comes out!

Also, with the addition of the rest of the Sprigatito line, I have now completed the Paldea starter lines! They're all from GO, aside from Meowscarada. I'd rather die than hatch eggs, lmfao

Well... I'm letting you know now!

As a small challenge to myself, I decided to shiny hunt all of the newly-announced Mega Evolutions from Z-A, plus the starters (who I suspect will get megas of their own)! I just finished that challenge tonight. Pictures below!

Also, if some of the dates on the Pokémon look off, it's because I had to reroll outbreaks... Bayleef in particular was a nightmare to pin down

Most of them were new to my collection, but not all of them! Including shinies I phased on (and another batch of GO shinies), here's the list of newcomers:

Weepinbell, Victreebel, Inkay, Malamar, Chesnaught, Delphox, Greninja, Bayleef, Croconaw, Volbeat, Burmy, Shieldon, Exeggcute, Exeggutor, Arbok, Grookey

This brings the grand total of shinies in my living dex from 316 to 332! We're making great headway!

I don't know if I'll be shiny hunting any more until the release of Z-A yet. If I do, I'll be sure to make an update post!

Went through and cleaned my boxes ahead of Z-A's release, which meant adding four more shinies to the living dex!

-Bastiodon (Pokémon GO)
-Kingdra, Krokorok, Conkeldurr (Pokémon Violet)

We are now at 336 shinies! Getting ever closer to that 1/3rd mark!
