Hey all! Been wanting to make a secondary blog for this for a while.
You see, a long time ago now (I want to say two years ago?), I decided to begin on a path I'd been considering, but was too afraid to walk down: making a Shiny Living Dex. For those unaware, a Living Dex is a Pokémon collection (often kept in Pokémon HOME for ease of access) of every single creature in the franchise (so not just Venusaur, but Bulbasaur and Ivysaur as well). And, well, a Shiny Living Dex is that... but with Shiny Pokémon.
You can imagine how big of an undertaking that is. In fact, I caught my very first shiny in 2013 (a Karrablast), back during my initial playthrough of Pokémon X, and I've been shiny hunting occasionally ever since. My collection currently sits at... 295 Pokémon out of 1,049 (If you're confused about that number, just hold on; I'll explain it later on.). So, needless to say... I've still got a long way to go, lmao.
Up until now, I've mostly hunted in Gens 7 and 9, as well as Pokémon GO; I dabbled in hunting in Legends Arceus and Gen 6; I only slightly hunted in BDSP and Gen 4; and I pretty much didn't hunt at all in SwSh and Gens 2, 3 and 5.
Now, you may be wondering a few things, be it the random "1,049" number I threw out or the mention of Pokémon GO for a living dex. So I'm going to go over the rules I set for myself for this dex and what I will and will not hunt:
...Okay, I think that's finally everything, lol. Now, about the fun stuff!
Ongoing Hunts: The hunts are sorted by game release order, not order of priority
Gen 2
-Shiny Celebi (Pokémon Crystal VC, Soft Resets) - 135 Encounters
Gen 4
-Shiny Registeel (Pokémon Platinum, Soft Resets) - ??? Encounters (lost the amount lol)
-Shiny Eevee -> Umbreon (Pokémon HeartGold, Masuda Method) - 787 Encounters

-Shiny Nidoran Male (Pokémon X, Horde Encounters) - 300 Encounters
Gen 7
-Shiny Yveltal (Pokémon Ultra Moon, Soft Resets) - 5 Encounters

Now, you may be wondering a few things, be it the random "1,049" number I threw out or the mention of Pokémon GO for a living dex. So I'm going to go over the rules I set for myself for this dex and what I will and will not hunt:
-All Pokémon must require some sort of effort for me to obtain as shinies. This means no trading, but also no events that are mere Mystery Gifts or free handouts like the Gible and Dratini from Black 2 and White 2 or the Munchlax from Ogre Oustin'. The HOME reward Meloetta and Keldeo require a regular living dex to be deposited into HOME, so they count. Pokémon GO shinies might have at times outrageous rates, but they come with their own challenges, such as, you know, physically walking around, or a set limit of encounters, unless you want to sell your house for microtransactions, which I cannot do anyway on account of living on welfare. I will say this rule is incredibly subjective, and I might infringe it myself due to that: for example, I'm not restricting myself from counting Community Day shinies or outbreak+sandwich shinies in SV, merely due to personal preference. After all, I still have a thousand of these to get, so I think it's not too big a deal if I got my Quaxly from GO or from hatching eggs.
If a Pokémon has two methods of acquisition that are both considered "less pure" by my set of rules (like, for example, Meltan, which can be obtained as a shiny from Pokémon GO events and as a HOME completion reward), I will prioritize whichever method gives me a shiny with my OT on it (so, in this case, the Pokémon GO Meltan), and, failing that, which one seems the coolest or most fun to me.
-"Distinct enough" permanent forms will be counted as separate Pokémon. This means that regional forms are on the menu, and so are forms like Blood Moon Ursaluna (when or if it becomes available as a shiny) or Paldean Tauros's Breeds, which are unchangeable and have a significant impact on gameplay. Meanwhile, more minor forms (like gender differences or Meowstic), forms which can be changed back and forth (like the Creation Trio, Mega Evolutions, or the Genies), and fusions (like Necrozma and Kyurem) will only count once for their base form. This is also how I landed on the number 1,049: after removing ineligible events and shiny locks, and adding eligible forms, that is the distinct number of Pokémon I will need (unless I miscounted somewhere).
-No RNG Manipulating, glitches, or hacks. The latter is pretty obvious, but as for the other two: I have previously RNG manipulated shinies for a Regulation H VGC team last year, and while that took effort and dedication to obtain in its own way, I ultimately considered this method to be its own thing separate from shiny hunting. As a result, Pokémon like Gastrodon or Torkoal which I have RNG manipulated as shinies are not included in this dex. I am also banning glitches that allow the direct acquisition of shinies. So, something like ACE in Gens 3 or 4 is banned, but going out of bounds to shiny hunt Shaymin in BDSP's older revisions is not, since one can just give you a shiny outright while the other just gives you the opportunity to shiny hunt an otherwise unobtainable Pokémon.
-An addendum on mobile games, spin-offs, and other miscellaneous details:
It's worth noting some Shiny Pokémon are only obtainable from spin-offs and mobile games. For example, Shiny Genesect has only ever been available in Pokémon GO, with the exception of one obscure Japanese event in Gen 5, and Jirachi can only be shiny hunted from the Pokémon Colosseum Bonus Disc in the US, and Pokémon Channel in Europe.
While we're on the subject: I am European, specifically French. As a result, some things may be available to me, while others may not (like the Jirachi distinction explained above). I'm not strictly preventing myself from hunting on foreign copies of games (I already have done so a handful of times), and I might resort to that for some cases like Faraway Island Mew, but if I get a shiny from some Pokémon GO France-exclusive event, I'll still count it if it fits the rest of the rules explained above.
And, finally... all the hunts conducted here will be on official hardware. A given console may be modded, but if it is, then no cheats or mods will be used (that would break the third rule anyway). It's possible I will use emulators for Gens 4 and 5 for the purposes of streaming to friends down the line, but if I do, then it will be done with no speedup or other advantages, and on exported saves from authentic cartridges.
I doubt anyone sees it as such, but just in case: the Nintendo Switch 2's Switch 1 "emulation" does not fit under this rule, and neither do the 3DS Virtual Console releases of Gens 1 and 2.
