Variety reported Wednesday that Mickey Rourke -- the actor who’s earned superlative praise for his performance in Darren Aronofsky’s “The Wrestler” -- and Sam Rockwell -- the indie film fave who can currently be seen in "Frost/Nixon" -- are in talks with Marvel Studios to appear in the forthcoming sequel to the 2008 hit “Iron Man.”

Rourke, a star of 1980s cinema whose career was revived after an appearance in Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller’s “Sin City” – also based on a comic book – is, according to Variety, rumored to play Crimson Dynamo, a burly, nuclear-powered answer to Robert Downey, Jr.'s svelte and suave Tony Stark/Iron Man.

The Hollywood Reporter, however, has Rourke confirmed to play a Russian named Ivan who becomes Whiplash, "a man with deadly, technologically enhanced coils."

For his part, Rockwell is rumored to play Justin Hammer, "a multibillionaire businessman" and rival of Tony Stark. Rockwell recently starred as a sex-addicted con man in "Choke," based on the Chuck Palahniuk novel of the same name.

Directed by Jon Favreau and written by Justin Theroux, “Iron Man 2” will be released by Paramount Pictures in the summer of 2010.

Crimson Dynamo HAS been the rumored villain...and this Crimson Dynamo's father was named Ivan. Justin Hammer's...new, though. But I'm liking it (Sam Rockwell as Justin Hammer, though...I dunno. I'd love to see him as Morgan Stark instead).

Dammit, I want the Madarin. Are they saving him for Iron Man 3 or something? I don't care if he's Chinese or anything. I just want a cultured, supervillain with 10 super rings. Dammit. Seeing another powersuit vs powersuit fight is going to be pretty boring.

Meh...I'm a sucker for the armored characters. I say the more the merrier.

But I WOULD like to see Mandarin appear (preferably less Fu-Manchu-ish). Maybe he could be a sort of tertiary villian. Planning things in the back. Leading up to Iron Man III. He could orchestrate Stark's fall from grace (leading Rhodes to take up the mantle), then injuring Rhodes (leading Stark to get back in the armor), and somehow funding Hammer (as part of a larger plan).

Yeah, but he was in it like Scarecrow was in the Dark Knight.

Not even. The screenplay implied that Mandarin was funding the Ten Rings but never actually showed him or referred to him directly.

Then who was the guy with the ring supposed to have been?

Mickey Rourke in Iron Man 2, huh. I guess with all the high praise he got in "The Wrestler" it shouldn't be surprising he would get more high profile roles like Iron Man 2.

I would have prefered The Mandarin myself and I don't count that guy leading The Ten Rings terrorist group to be The Mandarin. IMO, he was just a puppet while The Mandarin runs the groups operations behind the scenes.

Besides, didn't the leader of The Ten Rings have a name? It sure wasn't The Mandarin.

Well, Mandarin's likely not the Mandarin's real name, and his real name's never been revealed. His son, who is the current Mandarin, is named Temujin, though. Plus, there was Yellow Claw/Plan Chu, who was also inspired by Fu Manchu and gets confused with Mandarin a lot (then there was the whole Black Lama thing where the two fought...).
