For some reason my pc refuses to admit there is a microphone plugged into it. The mic i have is a plug and play thing, that needs no drivers etc.

I have all the right drivers . . . from what i can see, but it still wont accept the fact that the mic is plugged in.

I want to be able to use skype, and i know its not skypes problem. I have fiddled with the microphone settings, making it max volume etc. but still nadda.

When i go to select the microphone device it says "windows default device" and thats it. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Btw, yes i do have a phone, its just that skypes easier and free to use when i need to speak to people in other countries ;)

I cant listen in on conversations either. People will call me, i'll accept and then i get kicked out of the convo for a "problem with remote recording device"

So yeah, can someone help me fix my problem?

There isn't enough here to make some useful tech help.

What Type of Mic is it? Bluetooth, USB or 3mm jack? If USB can you give us the name of it.

What operating system you have? Vista (and Windows 7, but I'm not allowed to tell you that) has a Detect thing which if not working correctly will not allow Skype to work.

Some PC have more than one place that a 3mm jack can be plugged in. Mics usually have a Red ring around their socket. My Pc has two Mic Soctets, only the back one works on mine.

Sometimes you do need to install the official Drivers to the sound hardware, not the windows ones.

Its a jack mic and im running xp severpack2. It does NOT have automatic updates as its not a legit copy. I don't think that will have an effect, but it could. Its plugged in at the back, and the mic didn't come with drivers. Its just a plug and play gaming headset. . . it vibrates ;) that's why I got it hehe.

I have Win7 RC1... why aren't you supposed to say???

We're not officially to mention that stuff works in Win7, yet.

To the Mic Question: I am assuming that the two leads, the that one is Green is plugged in to the Green socket, and the red one in red. 3mm are the same type of plug that you use head phone for the DSes.

Best also telling us what the head set is. It could make my job easier.

(XP- Ouch, I'm doing this from Memory)

In Skype, try this. Options -> Audio Setting -> Select the sound cards mic. (There will be several options, for my Pc3 there are 4, I Have a USB Headset, and a 3mm Mic)

You see that speaker Icon by the clock on the task bar, right click it. Select Recording Devices. Hit select the one under on the one saying Mic. Advance options may make the Volume louder which you may need.

Try it out.

If there is no Mic option.. Windows hasn't detected your soundcard mic port. This requires finding your sound card drivers for Windows XP, usually on the soundcard/Motherboard company site works.

I have on board sound. And yes its all plugged in the right places.
The microphone works on another PC as well. I dunno the brand, its just a plug and play headset with mic.
