Microsoft caves again, gives Windows 10 users another year of security updates

For the 1/4 Windows users still on Windows 10 (which realistically, given how many of those numbers are business computers, is likely a majority of home users), support for Windows has now been extended another year, to October 12th 2027.

Windows 10 support has ended. You can enroll in ESU any time until the program ends on October 12, 2027. If you're already enrolled, your coverage will automatically continue through that date—no action needed.

With everything that's currently happening with RAM prices, etc, everyone's going to want to continue using their current computers for as long as possible. In that environment, Microsoft's instance on computers having TPM to install Windows 11 is only working against them. I can only see this extension as a silent acknowledgement of the reality that many users simply cannot afford to upgrade their computers to get Windows 10, and that abandoning those users is going to see more people become willing to take the step of switching to Linux. Which I'd still recommend people do, mind you. This extension at least gives everyone a bit more leeway to actually think about move, and prepare themselves for that.

i think i'm just probably done with windows (mostly) after this year. if i do buy another desktop (which seems to be likely, it's now or never with the way -gestures at everything- is going), i'm just gonna dual boot to bazzite and leave windows in the even that i do actually need it, but make bazzite probably my main OS.

they can't force people to use microflop windows 11 let's be real, this was a good move on their part. i will NOT move to Windows 11, I don't care.

Microslop 11 is not just egregious surveillance and AI-wise but it's also terrible experience to work with. I never thought it would be possible to break right-click context menu but they did it!

I imagine there's probably a limit for how far they can go with that. Hell, they'd probably prefer to release a version of Windows 11 without the TPM requirement than to support Windows 10 for any more years on top of this extension.

Unless M$ already have Windows 12 in the works and just hope that they can keep kicking the can until people can jump 2 generations like many did from XP to 8 (skipping Vista).

Windows 12 would not require any 3-letter modules because it will be streamed from the cloud and paid for with a subscription Don't you love being able to run a top of the line OS on your 2019 laptop in this economy? Of course you do!
