I have Microsoft Word 2003, and every time I try to open it up it just stops working. The details say "a problem has caused this program to stop interacting with Windows," but I don't know how to fix that. It worked just fine this morning!!

This information might help you solve the problem:

-My operating system is Windows Vista
-I keep it up to date with Windows Update
-I have an antivirus/antispyware system that automatically updates itself (CA Security Center)
-I just started getting updates for Microsoft programs last night
-I postponed the completion of the installation for about an hour and a half
-Many hours passed between the last update (midnight) and the last time Word worked (9 AM), and more passed until the time the problem started (12 PM)
-I got the program from somebody else's CD-ROM

I have no idea what's going on; can someone please help me? :'(

Well there's your problem![/adamsavage]

Unfourtunatly, Microsoft in its never-ending quest for more money, does not allow an individual copy of one of its programs to be installed on multiple computers. The installation was probably verified via the Internet sometime after this morning and the program has been blocked.

Anyway, someone correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't this forum just for science and technology news?

Actually, since I posted this, the problem has stopped happening as quickly as it started. It said that the documents themselves caused an error of some sort and I probably should not open them, but I did and nothing happened. Weird.

Oh, and I guess I forgot to mention I never officially registered the program, which I installed last month. So I don't think verification will ever have anything to do with it.

Ah, sounds like the files were corrupted.

I don't think so because it was, and sort of is once again, happening with nearly every single file in my computer. I'm removing all the updates I got for Word last night, seeing if that helps.

Also, I don't think it would be right for them to force you to buy a separate CD-ROM for every single computer... what if you had seven computers in the same room? Would you have to buy seven copies of Word?

You don't have to buy a separate CD for each computer, there is a set number of computers that can be registered that depends on the product license. I think the Student and Teacher edition of Office is around 5. Unless your friend burned the CD to a disk or downloaded it off the internet that was probably never the problem.

What may have happened was a conflict with a conflict from a word start-up extension to a new update (many people don't even know that they have word extensions installed on their systems, they aren't bad things of course, but many people don't know). You may not have got the error before, but that could have been due to something being modified after a save and close. Usually a person has to go into windows registry to fix that, but maybe an update corrected it, or something...

The problem is fixed now. I deleted the updates and the program works once again. Thanks for helping! :D

I would like to add: Get Word Perfect instead. Microsoft Word is fail.

No, Microsoft Word isn't fail. OpenOffice... now THAT'S fail.
