What is the purpose of Missingno?

can someone tell me what is the porpose of missingno? i caught 1 and my game is messed up

It's what happens when you catch a Pokemon that doesn't exist. Every Pokemon is identified by an index number. If that number isn't one of the ones in the game, it's a missingno. Also, this question is like 10 years old, so you should've found this info really EVERYWHERE on any website with Pokemon.

thx that thuroughly explaned it. i took it out of my box and i chllenged lorelie but all of the pokemon that she used became glitched after missingno died. also when i won the battle a messed up picture of lorelie. i got scarred and shut the power off.

Also add in the fact that it usually appears when a cheating device is used...Like Gameshark or Action Replay. :p

what is an action replay? also my sixth item didnt go to infinite. what did i do wrong?

Action Replay is another brand for a cheating device that is similar to Gameshark.

Also, you can't do duplication things with Missingno in the RSE games.

I was led to believe by my friends it was a Pokémon that they created, then tried to delete, but failed, leaving a glitch.

On the other hand, we were about 10 at the time.

Whenever the game "sets up" the planned battle against the Old Man's Weedle, it needs to change the player's character name to "OLD MAN" so that it will display "OLD MAN" instead of the name the player has entered.

The programmers decided to use the area of data where wild Pokémon information is as a temporary storage area for the player's name, due to the lack of memory on a Game Boy cartridge. Normally this wouldn't cause any abnormal activity, as the correct data for the wild Pokémon available is written to this area in memory whenever the player travels to an area where it is possible to catch wild Pokémon.

Along Cinnabar Island's coast, however, there is no data indicating which wild Pokémon are catchable, and the same is true for both Viridian City and Cinnabar Island itself, at least by movement in long grass. The game uses whatever data was already in the corresponding area of data when determining which wild Pokémon encountered and their levels-- now the player's name. Normally this space in memory would hold the data of the last area visited where wild Pokémon were catchable in grass and their level data (this same glitch allows players to exit the Safari Zone and Fly immediately to Cinnabar Island to be able to catch and fight Safari Zone Pokémon in the same way as they would in other areas), however, since in both Viridian City and Cinnabar Island the data is empty for Pokémon obtainable in the grass, the active data is never overwritten, leading to Missingno.'s. availability, among other things.

The name of the player has six hexadecimal values in it. The game needs only three "slots" of wild Pokémon data to store this.

The wild Pokémon the player encounters along the coast are determined by the third, fifth, and seventh characters of the player's name, while the levels are determined by the second, fourth, and sixth characters, respectively.

Seriously, since when did Bulbapedia become invisible?

its my bishe and its a only glitch reasherchers pokemon like me :) :) :D :D :D but why dose it look like a tetris block :|

When I challenged Lorelei using a Missingno in Blue, everything ran slowly and the sprites were reversed on the screen.

Oddly enough, Missingno actually seems to have a back sprite, the RBY one at least.

I wonder when someone will discover the DP Missingno...

in fire red i accidentaly saved after catching a missingno with my master ball anfd it turned into an egg that said it wouldnt hatch for a very long time will it ever hatch and if it does what will it be

one time i was doing the missingno glitch to see what would pop up and what moves it waould know and i encountered a lvl 184 aerodactyll. It actually knew aerodactyll moves like bite and wing attack it wasnt just a random icon used to display random data

There is no Missingno. in FR. There's ??????????, but that won't appear the same way as Missingno. will in normal Red, ever. Period.

And that Aerodactyl is also a result of the name glitch. Read the Missingno. article.

Butler:
I know it's going to be regarded as DP's Missingno. Heck, I even recorded the audio of that video and put in Missingno.'s call from RB instead of the Bulbasaur one. Nothing better to do. Of course, I also had nothing better to do than compare Deoxys and Missingno.'s calls...

a pokemon most foul

missingno is not the best fighting wise but he is the only pokemon i know who can destroy other pokemon in the games at least.

i have used missingno in battles [yes i caught one i didn't relise not to i just used a master ball that i got from the missingno cheat] when i mean fighting i mean conennecting fitghing like one person vs the other my missingo turned the other pokemon into a missingno and courputed the enemys pokemmon and game missingno is very contagies and if you ever get in any conection to will damage all the game data[my old game cant save and just deletes itself but maybe i used the missingno a bit to much.

It's a bad egg that will never hatch. It will just take up space in your PC.

Really? I heard that when it hatches, the game crashes and your save is erased.
