when I stumbled across the page on Misty's Azurill something did not quite add up. I was left with a couple of questions:
1. How does Azurill know refresh, a move that it could only learn by breeding?
2. Why did Tracey give the egg from his marill to Misty?
So after doing some more study into the subject I think I have answers to the questions.
1. Azurills can learn refresh as an egg move when its father is a corsola or a milotic. Now in my book an egg move is the equivalent of a paternity test for pokemon. So I started looking for corsolas and milotics that would be in contact with Tracy's Marill. And there was only one result, Misty's Corsola. So that answers one question, on to the next one.
2. the next question is partially answered by the first. if Misty's pokemon was the father of the egg, and Tracy already had a marill it makes sense to give the egg to Misty. Legally if Tracy doesn't want the egg the next candidate for custody would be Misty.

In my mind there is only one conclusion: Misty's Corsola is the father of her Azurill.

This is just a theory that I came up with. If anyone has any questions please post them.

DISCLAIMER: I'm not sure if this belongs here or in shippers paradise. if it would be better suited there would a mod please move it.

Misty's Corsola and Tracey's Marill have always seemed like they're both female to me.

They never said Misty's Azuril is related to Tracey's Marill - the two even ignored each other in the episode... so I really think some fans are overthinking stuff here
Tracey could just find or recieve that egg

But when I looked at both the pages for Tracy's Marill and Misty's Azurill they both stated that they were parent and child. as well as two pictures of both of them together with both the photos having captions stating that they are related.

Bulbapedia is a fan site, not everything written there is right
Also, that picture can only prove they are NOT related - the whole scene they just attacked TRio and completely ignored each other
If they were supposed to be parent and child, they'd either clearly say it or at least make the two smile at each other or something rather than ignore each other
I really think some people are trying too hard to find hidden meaning to things... until they clearly say something or at least hint at it, there's not much of reason to believe this

I like this theory, makes sense but the only thing it lacks is backup. While it could be argued Tracey found the egg, why the hell would he not try and locate the owner or mother?
For those that argue Corsola seems to be female itself, all Mr. Mime seem to be male, how's that one working out?
THough it could be argued the point that Volt Tackle is an Egg Move, but Pikachu learned it.

Basically, I like it, but it needs more solid evidence.

I don't care if you can do it in the games, but a piece of corral and a mouse having sex is one thing I hope the Anime never properly addresses.

I've always thought of Corsola as being female and Marill male.

But, I guess it could go the other way around. However was it ever said the Azurill was related to Marill?

Be glad it isn't about May's Skitty and someone's Wailord.

Assuming they are related, it is possible that Tracey's Marill is a boy and the Mom was a different Marril or Azumarill. Of course this would mean that Tracey's Marill knows Refresh, but I think that the only move it ever used on the show was water gun, so there is room for some more moves that was never shown on screen.

EDIT: oh, btw I think this is well thought out and a plausible theory. There's nothing wrong with looking "too far" into things if it's entertaining.

May's Bulbasaur and every Chikorita's use of Vine Whip have already proven the non-existance of "breeding moves" in the anime. This holds no weight.

True dat.

Have you seen the anime moves? They're as consistent as using jelly for concrete.

Who knows who's the father, but Corsola does seem like a woman, to be perfectly honest. I think we should call Professor Oak and have a Maury-Esque TV Show.

"CORSOLA YOU ARE NOT THE FATHER"

I think this is a pretty solid theory, actuelly, it makes a good bit of sense, if he'd found the egg, I think he'd probably have looked for the mother first, its his character, but if Misty's Corsola is the other parent, then that makes perfect sense for him to give the egg to her.

In the dub, Misty said "Tracey gave me an egg from his Marill..." Does anyone have the Japanese line...?

[I think Marill is female, and I think that was telegraphed way back in "A Way Off Day Off," when Marill was playing with Togepi. If Tracey had stayed through Johto, Marill might have become Togepi's babysitter, freeing Pikachu up for more action. Freeing Misty up for more action, come to think of it.]

Edit:
D'OH! Didn't realize it had been more than a month (or YEAR), sorry....
