MILLARD, Neb. -- A Millard mother said she's upset by a comic book that she considers sexually explicit that is in her son's elementary school library.

The comic is part of a popular new series about Spider-Man and the head librarian of the Millard School District said it's been in high demand.

"My son looked at this and goes, 'Ohhhh!'" said Physha Svendsen.

She said the book that her 6-year-old son brought home is not age-appropriate for Norris Elementary School students and wants it removed from the library.

"It has a lot of sexual undertones in here, as far as sexuality goes," she said. "They can learn this through any other place, but it's not something I allow them to learn, in my house at least."

Svendsen said she's actively involved with her four children's educations and said comic books like the one in question hold little literary value. She said she's especially concerned about her 6-year-old son, who's still developing reading skills.

Svendesen didn't elaborate on the book's literary elements that she found sexually inappropriate. Some illustrations in the book showed a female character wearing a bikini and a short skirt.

"I think having it in your school, you're still accountable for what's in there," she said.

Donna Helvering is the head librarian for the district and said each book that lands on Millard library shelves goes through a thorough selection process.

"We look at books, as far as age-appropriateness, we look at books for readability and we make sure that we're buying books that are appropriate for all our kids," Helvering said.

She said times and opinions can change, and she welcomes the complaints.

"We know that we're not always perfect and we always ask parents for their partnership and their contributions to what we purchase in our libraries," Helvering said.

She said that parents can file complaints about library books and the school is required to form a committee to evaluate the complaint within 30 days. The committee will reach a consensus about whether to keep the book on the shelves of that library.

Svendsen said she plans to hold on to the book that her son brought home while the review process takes place.

This is about a week old and fairly ridiculous, so I'll post it here rather than the Real World.

The link above shows the objectionable material. I'd love to see this mom's reaction to the Brand New Day storyline.

A bikini? Is this woman 120 years old?

It doesn't cover much, even by bikini standards. I can see why she would see this as unfit for 6-year-olds.

Still this is for all elementary students? Just only let 4th and up check it out.

Off topic but that school has an awesome name.

They can see worse at the checkout line in a grocery store.

Just another publicity hungry soccormon, who whines about things being to sexual or vilonent for kids. -_-

I HATE those type of people, It's just a bikini shesh.

Christ lady, it's not 1940 anymore!

I've seen more explicit and graphic stuff like the Battle Royale manga (which has an M rating of 18+) and I've bought 5 of the 15 books since I was 16! My parents have no problem with me buying it

Don't Marvel Comics have ratings on them? I know they don't ban Japanese Manga when their rating is clearly displayed, so I don't see why they should with American comics as well.

They do now, but I can't remember when that started. This issue may predate the rating system. Or else the bikini makes the mother feel it should receive a higher rating. Or...she's an attention whore.

...out of all the Amazing Spider-Man graphic novels by JMS, she has to complain about one of the very very few that doesn't feature Peter and MJ explicitly having sex? XD Not that's there's anything too raunchy, just covered-up nudity.

I'm thinking she's just a Concerned Mother (Language warning!).

This woman's life has got to be perfect if she got her knickers in a twist over this. "I don't care that America is involved in a war and the economy is going down the toilet! My little peanut saw part of a booby! Something needs to be done about this nao!!!!11111!!!"

And people wonder why I'm so damned cynical. :disgust:

Heck my local fox affiliate refused to show the Osborne thing cause of stuff like this. They are so concerned about the soccer moms and stuff.

You know I can't stand people like this. I mean it's only a bikini and they have shown much "worse" in the actually comics throughout this past decade. She is either a woman with too much free time on her hands and needs a hobby, an attention whore as GrnMarvl13 already put or BOTH.

If MJ was flat-chested, this probably wouldn't have been an issue... Perhaps jealousy brought this on... >_>

If It was ultimate Spiderman, then I own that comic....
its not that bad. Just the silver sable and her lovely lovely lady lumps.
Nothing that should be flipped out about
